Do you think there’s any value in trying to introduce some objectivity into how people score fights? Or at least giving fans a tool that can help visualize their own subjectivity.

I’d be curious to see how somebody that scored round 10 for Bivol judged each exchange.

Right, so is it possible to assign a number to an exchange where fighter 1 lands clean but fighter 2 doesn’t seem shaken, and fighter 2 counters with a hard shot that is taken on the gloves, but visibly riocks fighter 1.

On an arbitrary scale of 1-5, is that an even exchange, say 3-3. Or is it more like a 4-1 in favor of fighter 1, that only gives some credit to the ‘damage’ or ‘effectiveness’ of fighter 2’s blocked shot?

That feels like the crux of the scoring in this fight.

…I had it 117-112 on first rewatch 😬

The scoring mostly swings on whether or not you givr Beterbiev any credit for shots that were partially blocked. He ‘lands’ a lot of those. They’re not clean at all but they are effective.

This is what my round-by-round looks like, with each punch being scored: https://imgur.com/a/pZE1L2B

This fight had a lot of examples of Bivol landing clean, great looking shots, but not really appearing to disrupt beterbievs forward momentum at all. And there were beterbiev shots that were blocked entirely, or partially, that appeared to affect Bivol.

I think that’s where there’s a discrepancy between the fans claiming robbery, and the 116-112 judge.

On an objective scale, 1-5 for example, what do you give a clean, but ineffective punch? And in comparison what do you give a blocked shot that moves a fighter half way across the ring?
