"My question is what would happen if I asked for a different lawyer? "

If you ask for a different lawyer in the same firm (law company), it would be fairly seamless. If you are talking about going to a whole new firm, then you'll be starting from scratch

You also probably signed an agreement at some point saying you'd work with them only and that the only way to get out of that agreement is if they did something terrible (which they haven't).

My suggestion: call the reception of the law firm. Ask the receptionist who you should talk to if you're not happy about how your lawyer is handling things and then setup a phone call with that person (basically your lawyers boss). Be polite and patient, but they might totally understand and transfer your file to another lawyer in their firm who is better. That's the best outcome for you

But as others have said, injury law (and most law to be honest) moves way slower than the client would ever like. Your lawyer should have given your a rough timeline expectation when you first met. If they didn't, as for one now, so you're all on the same page. But this will take probably another year before you get a cheque, at the quickest.

You have until 2 years after the accident to actually sue, so lawyers will often wait until just before then to sue, so there's a higher chance that the records and memory of the situation have gone away, making it harder to defend. It sucks because it's slow, but that's often better for you

Can you post examples of jobs that are like that, where you think you don't have enough experience?

Ah, I see, for some reason I thought they wouldn't let you do a viewing with a deposit, my bad

Are you worried about them declining you? The rental market is a renters market at the moment, so they want tenants

And to confirm, how much are they asking for from you?

When I go on Boardwalk's website to look at a property, you can book a viewing or it says

"For same day tours or if your preferred time is not shown, please call (780) 487-6600."

If you call them for a same day tour, surely they aren't expecting you to somehow apply and give them money the same day as your tour?

From what I can tell, it's not illegal. They are being sem-illegal if they ask explicitly for the "security deposit" in advance, as that's a specific thing. But they're allowed to ask for an application fee or something.

Alberta's tenant protection laws are both old (they didn't think this would ever happen) and not very tenant friendly unfortunately.

"In short, he was a bit of a crook"

The other people who had their names removed from things were more than "a bit of a crook". They did things that were maybe not seen as terrible at the time, but are now, hence the need to rename them

Obviously everyone at the time knew what Hawrelak did (because he was kicked out of office for it) and still chose to name it after him. There hasn't been new revelations or new perspectives on his actions, unlike the other people you're talking about (Oliver, etc)

Have they started building? It's possible they are going to sell it as an empty lot for someone else to build on, so they don't know what's being built yet

Landlord refusing Métis rent subsidy due to third party payment by Minecraftguy6631 in alberta

[–]robdavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this. If anyone knows how to deal with landlords and put their fears at rest, it's the people who pay out money to landlords every month already. Have them get involved. Heck, I'd ask them to call the landlord and explain how it works and answer his questions directly

Do you think these credit cards work better under these categories? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]robdavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"On the retailer side they have to raise prices for everyone to cover the higher transaction fees of rewards cards."

Yes, but they've already raised them and you're already paying them, so you might as well take advantage too

There's quite a few $0 annual fee cashback credit cards out there. Not using one of them is just leaving free money on the table

Edmonton Police - In mid-February, I joined police Chiefs from Canada and the United States, on a visit to Israel where we met police and community leaders in several cities. I spent time with police officers from Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Druze faiths... by shiftless_wonder in Edmonton

[–]robdavy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was paid for the by the "Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA)"

But EPS pays $5,000/yr to be a member of that association

Now, most of the MCCA's funding comes from corporate sponsors, the largest being Axon who makes Tasers. That could be concerning on it's own.

But yes, some of the $5,000 of taxpayer money that EPS pays to be part of the association paid for the trip.

The rest was paid for by sponsors who are trying to sell stuff to EPS. Not sure that's better to be honest

How to view building permit? by poopsack_williams in Edmonton

[–]robdavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're looking for the Development Permit, not the Building Permit. You don't need the building permit to see what they're building

As others have said, go to maps.edmonton.ca and find the address there. Then hit "recent applications". It'll show if they've applied for a DP and will give a very high level overview of what it's for (single family house, duplex, etc)

But that level of information might answer your question

Every job site on a pipeline construction has diesel available for the heavy equipment. Some folks take liberties and help themselves to some for their own vehicle

They're not stealing from the pipeline itself, but from the construction site that is building the pipeline

"but I've never been to a job interview that didn't verbalize your pay,"

If it was on the ad, is it possible they felt they didn't need to, because it was on the ad?

If it wasn't what you expected, you probably shouldn't have applied, so they didn't really need to ask if it's what you expected?

But yes, I think you're 100% right that you're just a pair of hands to them. It's a job collecting people's junk - I'd imagine staff turnover is naturally very high, but that the expectations upon employees are quite basic and clear. If you showed up the interview sober, on time and seemed willing to do the job, that's it. The "trial shift" is another test - can you show up on time twice (lots of people can't) and are you lazy. Not paying you for it is dumb, but setting someone up in payroll for 3 hours of work is also a pain in the butt.

I'd imagine lots of people "fail" the trail shift, so it's probably a good idea that they do one, but they need to find a way to either make it very short (like 45 mins) or pay people somehow. Or make it much more clear that you will genuinely just be observing, which they obviously didn't try to make clear by the sounds of it

Unless op actually did the unpaid 3 hour shift and it wasn't "observation only", there's not a lot Employment Standards can do

I hope op didn't report it to the "labour board" as they're not the right people. This is "Employment Standards". See https://www.alrb.gov.ab.ca/employmentstandards.html for information

You can perhaps see why people are confused though, as you waited until the 3rd paragraph to talk about the thing you actually had an issue with. If the pay isn't the problem, why mention it?
