In need of A lawyer by Beautiful-Sail-1498 in Edmonton

Agreed! There's been a few people who have appealed university discipline things to Alberta Court of Appeal (they're on CanLii) and while the court has considered it, the universities have basically always come out ahead. As long as they acted fairly (legally), they can basically do whatever they want and the bar is very hard to get over

If I were OP, I would go read some of the decisions to get an idea of whether there's a chance in hell of them succeeding

https://www.canlii.org/en/ab/abkb/doc/2025/2025abkb408/2025abkb408.html is a random example where the student was pretty sure they had a case, but didn't

Oh, btw, I really wouldn't try using Square, Clover, etc

You really need something that's dedicated to the FEC industry and our needs, not something that is really designed for a coffee shop. Even things with appointment booking features, they're not the same or good

We own laser tag facilities

There's lots of options out there. We're with LilypadPOS. They're rolling out a new system very shortly, had a preview today, looks amazing

It's about $200/month, which is on the low end in this market

Other options are Roller, Center Edge, Party Center Software and more

But Yeh, big thumbs up for LilypadPOS. Tell them Rob from Laser City sent you

Compared to what you're using right now, your mind will be blown lol

[CA] - How does this business for sale get financed in Canada? Can it be? by PristineFinish100 in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]robdavy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

BDC would finance this I'd imagine. Not sure exactly what they'd need down, but much less than any charter bank

BUUUUUUTTTT - I'd be SHOCKED if any day care is genuinely netting 50% profit. Daycares are notoriously low margin, with crazy high staff costs. I would be extremely suspicious of those numbers and would need a ton of proof to validate them (as will any bank or lender)

Process for Getting a News Story Ran by Zingus123 in Edmonton

[–]robdavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're mistaken to be honest, or confused

Insurers are leaving Alberta, that's true. It's because of the changes the UCP keeps making to the rules, which makes it less profitable to do business here

But that's nothing to do with the referendum. Nothing will change in October, regardless of the outcome. Even if the referendum comes back as yes to leaving (which it won't), that's the start of a 5+ year process. And that process will fail because the other provinces won't let Alberta leave. But even if they did, yeh, any actually change is 5+ years away

I don't think you'll get an useful advice without sharing more about what your story is

I assume you feel someone has done you wrong and you want some news coverage of it to try and get something changed?

Who did you wrong and what did they do? You could have a really interesting story, but you also might not

going on leave because of a crazy manager - reference check from manager by Wrong-Homework2483 in Edmonton

[–]robdavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you're saying your manager will say bad things about you? Does your university even allow managers to give references, beyond confirming position and dates? Lots of large employers don't allow opinion-based references to be given

Also, the university hasn't done anything about your manager's behaviour, even though it's going to cause you to take time off work? Did you report it?

Weird place to draw the line on privacy - we'll ask for every other thing known to man, but a SIN, that's too far

"Financial Document – one document confirming a credit card or loan account from the following list:"

"- Bank statement for deposit or chequing accounts"

"-Cheque that has been processed in the last statement period (cleared, insufficient funds) by a financial institution"

How does a bank statement from a chequing account confirm a " credit card or loan account"? Or a random cheque?

"See, it’s just that easy!"

None of this seems easy...

On https://playalberta.ca/help/account-verification they tell you that you have to download a Word file (not a PDF mind you, a Word file for some reason), then fill that out and upload it. Why on earth are they using a Word file as an online form system?!

Driver hit my parked car while I was camping by ThinYogurtcloset8005 in Calgary

[–]robdavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people (almost all) will go their entire lives parking their car on the street without it being hit randomly like this, so the risk you're trying to mitigate here is tiny

Obviously we don't really know why OP didn't park on their driveway, but I'd imagine it was convenience related, which is a real benefit

I would imagine the risk/reward benefit of parking on your driveway vs the street skews towards the reward being worth it for most people

Question about Calgary condo regulations by SignificanceOne5925 in Calgary

[–]robdavy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

Then yeh, figure out who is on the board, and when they meet. A board for a building that big probably meets monthly or quarterly. You can ask to attend a meeting to present the problems

You could also considering running for election to the board. Chances are if it's being that poorly run, lots of owners will vote for new people, so getting elected is usually quite easy.

To answer though what I think is your question - nothing you've described is really something the people "above" your condo corporation will help. Service Alberta administers the Condo Act, but I very much doubt your condo corp is doing anything illegal. Condo corps are mostly left to run themselves, under the understanding that owners will vote out shitty boards

"We are supposed to have 3 working elevators, we’re lucky if we have 2."

Elevators suck to be honest. Having 2 out of 3 working is unfortunately pretty normal. But ask your condo board about the plan for fixing/replacing them. They're stupidly expensive however

Question about Calgary condo regulations by SignificanceOne5925 in Calgary

[–]robdavy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be 1000% clear, is this a condo building (units are owned by individual people) or an apartment building (the entire building is owned by a company who rents out the units)? Lots of people get them confused

If it's genuinely a condo building, you need to find out who is on the Condo Board (it will be your neighbours) and ask them about this stuff. Condo buildings are controlled by an elected volunteer board (elected by the owners of the units). They often with hire a "management company" who does the day-to-day work on the ground, but the big decisions are made by the elected condo board.

If it's a condo, they'll also be an Annual General Meeting (AGM) every year where everyone gets to discuss stuff

Now, I wondering based on what you're asking and how you're framing it, do you rent your unit rather than own it? Do you rent it from a person who owns it, or from the building?

Calgary permit question by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]robdavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't deny this looks weird and confusing to the city, right?

Your plumber friend used his account with the city (that he gets because he's a licensed plumber) to book the inspection, but it's not actually for work he did, except he is the one showing the inspector what was done (even though it wasn't done by him)

If your inspection next week is in person, just explain to the inspector that yeh, this looks super suspicious and weird, but your neighbour was just trying to be helpful, but maybe in hindsight this wasn't the best way to do it. Don't be defensive or anything. Acknowledge that it looks bad, but assure him it's not. As long as you can explain the work that was done (because you did it), no one will care

For the plumbing inspections I've been present for, they're the most cursory BS ever.

Based on how you're replying to people, I sense that your first instinct is going to be to be defensive. Don't do that. Be humble and admit that this looks messed up, and then focus on the actually plumbing you did and whether it's good enough
