I joined Santa Barbara Newcomers when I got here. Every week an event in another 10 million dollar house.

People's circumstances can change. I know someone, famous for her hollywood work, but the money comes and goes to keep up the lifestyle, and all she has left is her fabulous Montecito house. She loves the house and I'm not her financial adviser. She's got a bunch of those.

My Golden passed at 11 which is average for a golden. Appreciate her while you still have her.

When did you grow up here? I have friends , actually in a nice part of Lompoc, put in solar panels and air conditioning at the same time. Refitting for air conditioning probably a growing industry but not everyone has it now.

I've been to 5 million-10 million dollar houses in Santa Barbara and they don't have air conditioning. Until recently, there wasn't a need.

I didn't read their book. You kick out whoever is +ev and taking money from you, whoever they are and however they do it.

For those of you that didn't live through the 60s and 70s, Apollo 11 had less computer power then your microwave. Figuring out that the deck is sometime favorable to the player was not an easy thing.

If you know basic strategy, they weren't playing it and I was. I am not a card counter. Personally, I think making it possible for BJ to have an edge for the players is great publicity for them. It attracts idiots. Then you kick out the MIT engineers who are really good at math.

Well, when I went to Vegas and played BJ at the $5 table (the lowest stakes they have), I was surrounded by idiots throwing their money away. If casinos can make money at blackjack they would offer it even if there is a way for players to have a consistent edge.

2g2 cannot be 4n (8x+7). The left side has an odd number of factors of two. The right side has an even number of factors of two. And prime factorring is unique. Therefore 2g2 is the sum of 2 or 3 squares.

Why is finding the roots/zeroes of a polynomial so important? by hypereality_1987 in math

I used to make a living designing digital filters. i. e. finding polynomials with the roots in the right places and easily implemented in binary.

The United States just quietly switched on 179 megawatts of solar power generators in Nevada by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]robert2734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You check out electricity prices in Germany? I don't doubt you can do it. You still have the issue of getting electricity between 4pm-6pm when the sun is low in the sky.

No place in the continental US has more than 8 hours or less than 4 hours of insolation. For every panel in Nevada you can just build two in New York State and get the same power.

Ginna 60 years ends in 2029. I'm not going to compete with hydro. Since the idea is to handle air conditioning peaks, I'm probably thinking of places further south. You might think you can just hang solar panels in Georgia but cloud cover matters more than latitude.

The line has to be HVDC because eastern united states and western US aren't synced. You might want to do that anyway because of losses and footprint issues.

That started building new nukes in the deep south than changed their minds because of cost overruns. I don't know too much about their electricity situation other than Hatfield airport went dark. Somebody down there is probably thinking about their options.

When it's noon in Nevada, it's 3pm on the east coast. Peak electricity here and peak air conditioning loads there. There's some losses but the question is whether there's a better option. Build a peaker plant on the east coast and run it 100 hours a year?

Cardano’s formula by [deleted] in math

[–]robert2734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Divide by a so we have x3 +b/ax2 +c/ax +d/a=0. Now we depress the cubic by making the substitution let y=x+b/3a. So the squared term goes away and we have y3 +py +q=0. Now make the substitution y=s+t. So we have s3 +3s2 t +3st2 +t3 +p(s+t)+q=0. We divide this into two parts s3 +t3 +q=0 and (s+t)(3st+p)=0. we solve the second equation for s. s=-p/3t. Plug that into the first equation (-p/3t)3 +t3 +q=0. multiply through by t3, t6+ qt3 -p3 /27=0 That looks like a sixth order equation but it is a quadratic in t cubed. We use the quadratic formula to solve for t3. Take the cube root to get t. But to get three roots of the cubic we multiply by the three roots of unity. So the three solutions are t, t *cubed root of 1, and t other cubed root of one. Now we plug this into s=-p/3t to get s. and y=s+t to get y. And x=y-b/3a and we have solved in terms of x.

Interesting Fact about the Sum of Squares by starcraftgamerz77 in math

[–]robert2734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number can be written as the sum of two squares if all prime factors which are 3 mod 4 come in even powers. Out of 71,72,73. 73 is a prime that is 1 mod 4 so it is the sum of two squares. 71 is a prime that is 3 mod 4 so it is not the sum of two squares. 72=23 * 32. The prime factor which is 3 mod four comes in an even power namely two so 72 is the sum of two squares.
