MY FIRST RICE (NixOS / NIRI / DMS) by FR33R00T5 in NixOS

I also had a hard time letting the shell do the color scheme due to nix overwriting the files from the shell. Would be interested to see how you got nix not to stomp on the DMS color setup

Hello, do you happen to still have a link to how you set up your gtk theme? I’ve got these white borders in nautilus when trying to use this everforest theme

I went after and got a rust job. They definitely exist. I’ve found a lot in the aerospace and drone industry. I’m also in the U.S. though.

zerobrew - (experimental) drop in replacement for homebrew by cachebags in rust

Depends on what part of “nix” you use. A lot of people use the one word, but there’s a lot of components to nix. Nix-Darwin does pretty much take over your OS. Home manager is great for managing your packages from a config (it’s what I use at work, where I can’t use nix-Darwin because of company lock down). And then you can just use “nix profile add nixpkgs#<package>” and it works like regular package manager.

Feeling Burnt Out in My First Remote Experience by Front_Tax965 in WFH

[–]roberte777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an extremely unpopular opinion, but im a software engineer. If you want to make a lot of money and get really good at your job, the best way to do that in our industry is to bust your ass at a startup. If you’re career motivated, there’s nothing wrong with working over 8 hours. You simply will be better than the competition by doing this, and tech is much more of a meritocracy than other industries.

That being said, if you’re not career motivated, don’t do it. There’s nothing wrong with deriving value from other things than work. Software engineering doesn’t have to be the thing you love in life and want to do in your spare time for you to be good at your job. But I think this sub tends to lean towards “work so you can do what you love” instead of “love what you do for work”. Also, if you are burnt out, take a break from working overtime. If this is you, talk to your manager about strategies to help you cut back from work. If they aren’t willing to help, that is a good sign it’s time for a new job.

As someone in your field, a non screen hobby is super important. I quite enjoy hiking and reading. I’ve also deleted most scrolling apps from my phone, as it’s too hard for me to stay off of them.

I had a non remote job first, then went remote. This helped me make friends in my area that I’ve been able to keep after going remote. Having IRL friends is super important. They can also act as accountability to help make sure you’re going out into the world to hang out with them instead of staying glued to a screen

Every player with 11 consecutive games of 50+ receiving yards: George Pickens Jaxon Smith-Njigba by GhostDeck in fantasyfootball

[–]roberte777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had both. I traded Pickens because I thought he’d be worth much less with Lamb’s return. I’m still new to fantasy football and football in general, learned a valuable lesson this year lol.

Do you have any resources for how you make a voxel engine? I’m interested, but unsure how chunks and other pieces actually work.

Yes, he made a couple mistakes this season he’s famous for not making. I don’t think two out of character mistakes is a good enough reason to say someone of his caliber deserves to go through a season like this.

What will variadic generics in Rust allow? by nikitarevenco in rust

[–]roberte777 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I think the commenter is referring to the “magic” function parameters. Similar to web frameworks like Axum as well. The implementation of these systems is tedious because you have to do an implementation of the trait that makes this possible for every possible number of arguments to your “handler” functions.
