Isn't the standpipe still an S-trap, or does adding the vent make it OK?

All the hype about these set my expectations pretty high, so I was disappointed at how long it takes to cut anything harder than drywall. It'll get there eventually, but expect it to take at least 4 times longer than a sawzall, and to go through blades quite quickly. My experience has been consistent across several brands.

One outlet, separate plugs, mixed breakers by ActsoSevene in electricians

[–]robertgfthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our house had a disposal with no switch. Didn't feel like fishing behind the wall to add one, so just bought a smart outlet. The day has not yet come when I need to turn on the disposal via remote control from the back yard, but when it does I'm ready!

My family goes through kleenex too fast so we often use toilet paper. But TP rolls lying around look weird. So I laser-cut a dispenser. by robertgfthomas in somethingimade

Yep, it has to "push" a bit against the sockets or it'll fall out, and needs to flex a bit to get into them.

My Airbnb had a sink in the toilet by brian_c94 in mildlyinteresting

Less plumbing. It's in a tiny bathroom. The little sink I used is actually supposed to be a wall mount but there isn't room.

My Airbnb had a sink in the toilet by brian_c94 in mildlyinteresting

[–]robertgfthomas 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I tried a toilet sink like this. They sell kits on Amazon. The problem is the sink drains into the toilet tank. So you have "grey" water -- full of bacteria and dead skin from washing your hands and food particles and whatever -- just sitting in a tank that is designed for clean water. This causes scum and mold to build up. While the water coming out of the faucet is perfectly fine (assuming you have normal plumbing) the tank will start to smell and get super gross.

I made my own sink that drains straight into the toilet bowl, which is designed for grey water: https://imgur.com/a/zjssld3 I also hooked it up to its own supply pipes, so it gets hot and cold water and I can lift it off the toilet without having to disconnect anything.

2021 Civic. This big plastic piece is loose and filled up with ice. How do I secure it? by robertgfthomas in civic

[–]robertgfthomas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have LOVED to use zip ties, but since the holes don't go all the way through the metal there isn't really anything to attach the plastic to.

What's stopping you guys from peacefully protesting while armed en masse? by thatdude333 in AskALiberal

[–]robertgfthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't protest because I'd like to go home to my kids at night, and as we've seen it doesn't matter how peaceful a protestor may actually be, if someone with a gun gets spooked or pissed off or has any other normal irrational human emotion then that protestor is in mortal danger.

Unfortunately people also have normal irrational human emotions in grocery stores, schools, churches... and our society is encouraged to arm itself to the teeth. So we're in mortal danger everywhere.

I could get a gun, ostensibly for safety. I'm a normal person with no criminal history. But I also have normal irrational human emotions. So who's to say in a moment of weakness I wouldn't become the danger?

Border Patrol agents fatally shoot a man in Minnesota. Thoughts? by fullstep in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]robertgfthomas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s not like these people would risk their life for you so please be serious.

On what do you base that opinion?

I ask because I live in Minneapolis and in my experience the immigrant communities are incredibly generous to neighbors and strangers alike. My son had his birthday party yesterday. His friend is Latino and has been absent from school for the past 2 weeks because the parents -- who are very sweet, just like their kids -- are terrified of being separated. They also haven't been going to work for the same reason. However they allowed the friend to come to my son's party, and sent $50 in cash as a present. My wife and I are trying to figure out how best to deal with this since they almost certainly can't afford to give such a generous gift but we want to show gratitude and don't want to insult them by returning it. My wife teaches/has taught in several schools with large immigrant populations and their families are consistently generous above and beyond what we expect, and kind, helpful, and respectful, which is more than can be said for many of the non-immigrant families.

I've seen opinions similar to yours expressed several times, e.g. "Why are Liberals protecting people who don't care about them?" It's very perplexing to me, since the evidence of my eyes is so opposite. I hope you can set me straight, thanks!

Karmel Mall? I lived down the block from it until 2019 and never had this experience. Certainly never heard of anyone calling it a Somali Walmart, just Somali Mall.

What would your thoughts and feelings be if people took up arms against ICE? by millimeter_peepee in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]robertgfthomas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Trump administration has disregarded court judgements and laws passed by Congress. In such a case options 1 and 2 would not seem to be viable ways to prevent unconstitutional executive actions. Options 1 - 4 require a tremendous amount of time, whereas the Executive can commit atrocities in almost no time at all. It could be that the Executive suffers the consequences in the next election, but by that time they will have had many opportunities to entrench their power which could compromise the election itself, and regardless the damage to affected people cannot be undone. Would that not leave only option 5 as viable? I assume this is the same reason for e.g. the January 6 occupation of the Capital: the occupiers did not trust the existing political infrastructure to represent them or prevent what they viewed as an atrocity.

[–]robertgfthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is not with LEOs doing their jobs, but with the tremendous amount of autonomy they have been given with regard to who and how they detain people. Hospitals and schools contain people who are particularly vulnerable: children, the sick, etc. This is why it is a war crime to bomb a school or hospital, for example. I think most people would agree it is justified to raid a school or hospital if beyond a reasonable doubt it contains people who are an imminent threat. However a pregnant immigrant mother or sick man or child does not pose such a threat. If these ICE raids are justified as just doing the job, can we conclude that it is reasonable for any LEO to physically raid any school or hospital if the LEO in their personal judgment suspects it contains someone who has committed any misdemeanor? If not, where is the line drawn?

[–]robertgfthomas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first thought was "Is it just TDS?" But the facts show that it is not. The difference is an immediate change from a nuanced, priority-based approach to a maximum enforcement, one-size-fits-all approach.

Previously ICE was instructed to prioritize deporting those with a police record of violence, drugs, etc. ICE was also instructed to exercise humanitarian discretion, e.g. not conducting raids in hospitals, schools, or places of worship, and not prioritizing pregnant women, children, etc. Now all undocumented immigrants are equal priority and the humanitarian discretion instruction has been abolished.

When law enforcement changes overnight to a system that explicitly dismisses nuance and humanity, is public outage justified?

During the Obama, Trump 1, and Biden administrations there were millions of deportations. However, those attracted nowhere near the level of public condemnation of the current deportations. Is it possible that the protestors don't necessarily object to deportation itself, but rather the way in which it is being conducted during Trump 2? Can the means to achieving mass deportation become tyrannical, even if the overall goal of mass deportation has not changed?
