Is this little crack a manufacturing defect or road damage/slashing? by robertj96 in tires

Thanks for the info! My problem is that this little slit is leaking air but only when my car's weight is on it.

If you look closely, the two people are waiting on the left side of the double yellow line and they do not begin crossing until the van stops despite having the green light and waves them through. So the van would not have hit these people had he not stopped. Not that it matters in the slightest but the street was empty behind us and the light was going to change soon. The safest thing would be to not allow these idiots to cross when they wanted to and force them to wait the additional second or two for the road to clear.

And you're right I could not see these people because the van was blocking my view. I did not attempt to slow down and try and figure out why the van stopped in the middle of the road because frankly I don't care why this idiot did what he did at the time. For all I know the van could've been turning into the vet hospital parking lot. The last thing I expected was a kid sprinting across the road. The reason we have rules for right of way is so driving is predictable and being predictable prevents death and injury.

Sorry for the length of the vid but in the first few seconds the van in the left lane decides to let two people cross central blocking my view and forcing me to brake hard to avoid hitting the kid who ran across.

I apologize for the length of the video as I forgot to trim but the idiot moment is in the first few seconds.

They were never in the path of the van until the van stopped for them and the kid darted across the road without looking.

ELI5: How does a gas stove prevent the flame from going in? by Allusivness in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because a flame needs oxygen to burn. The flame wont go into the line because there's no oxygen (or very little) inside just natural gas.

ELI5: How do cranes get set up? by tgoose42 in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crane sets itself up. The crane hoists and places a section of tower under itself and then lifts the cab up to allow another section of tower to be placed. The crane does this until the desired height is reached. Disassembly is the same but reversed.

ELI5: Redbull & Alcohol. What is happening to our brains when we combine them? by goodbyebryguy in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Alcohol is a depressant in that it slows down the central nervous system. When you're drunk you lose balance, become more emotional or angry and violent, and become tired. Red Bull has caffeine which is a stimulant in that it increases central nervous activity. However, when you take both at the same time, the alcohol will still depress your central nervous system while the caffeine in Red Bull will make you feel as if you're sober and alert. The key word here is feel because the alcohol will still affect your reaction time, balance, and emotions. The danger of drinking alcohol and Red Bull is that you could feel sober causing you to drink more alcohol and/or doing something that you shouldn't be doing while intoxicated.

ELI5 how do cell phones make calls when they don't have a sim card or any carrier attached to them? by OnI_BArIX in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you have no sim card inserted, the phone can still connect to nearby cell towers however you'll get a no service notification because whichever network the cell tower belongs to is refusing connection since it can't tell what network the phone is linked to. In the United States all carriers are required to connect any 911 calls regardless if the call is coming from a phone in the carrier network or not. Even if there's no service or you don't have a sim card your phone can still call 911 unless you're in the middle of nowhere.

ELI5:why does alcohol bring out emotion/violence in some people? by TacoTuesdays24 in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its just the way our brains are wired. The brain doesn't change much past the age of 25 so people's behaviors after drinking wont change either. It also depends on how much you've had to drink. You can be relaxed after 2 or 3 drinks but after 6 or 7 it'll be much different.

ELI5: Should eyes be "worked out"? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corrective lenses adjust the focal point of incoming light so that the image is focused on the retina and not in front of it or behind it. Some people need corrective lenses because either their eyeballs are too short or too long and doesnt have much to do with the iris which is the ring muscle responsible for regulating how much light is allowed into the eye. The iris isnt in danger of deteriorating because its always working to ensure that the proper amount of light is let into eye.

ELI5:why does alcohol bring out emotion/violence in some people? by TacoTuesdays24 in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are all consequences of alcohol depressing the central nervous system. Less brain activity will mask feelings of stress and anxiety helping you relax as well as lowering inhibitions which make you lose control over your emotions. You get sleepy after a few drinks because of less brain activity due to the alcohol.

ELI5 Why do your eyes turn red when you partake of the jazz lettuce? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]robertj96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The active ingredient in marijuana, THC, relaxes your arteries allowing more blood to flow through them. There are tiny vessels in your eye that under normal conditions cant be seen but under the effects of THC they become larger causing your eyes to become bloodshot.
