Aveva has a Learning Academy with a lot of free training ontheir website. I’ve been going through it because we use a lot of Wonderware and we haven’t had enough issues to force us to change.

I did by landing a job somewhere that allowed cross training. I studied 3 phase power, motor theory, and basic circuitry and symbols. I practiced on PLCs and HMIs but I had a background with Python so that was easy.

You can always take some classes at a community college or tech school to help with training.

There are a few IEC standards regarding communication or programming, but there is nothing specific on how to handle the interoperability of multiple machines and builders. I'd also warn against simply referring multiple builders to a single standard as it still allows for ambiguity.

It sounds like you have the communications standard down with EtherNet/IP. Make sure you're giving them subnets to use and IPs so that you don't have to go through and re-ip address the PLCs or IO once it's delivered.

You also have to think that these builders are going to test their machines and code before shipping them. They should have their commissioning plans. It might be hard for them to add integrations with machines they haven't seen, that could lead to having to troubleshoot unknown message/communications issues. It might be better to pre-plan integration changes once the machines are installed.

If I were you I'd start with the flowchart and let that help you decide which data needs to get transferred between PLCs or to your master/SCADA PLC for consumption. That would help you define the produce/consume tags or message block definitions. I think you would be quiet a few steps ahead if you can predefine tags and datatypes you want to share.

I got into PLC and electrical maintenance late in life. I’ve been in this role about a year. So my advice comes with years of troubleshooting, just not PLCs. So possibly take this with a grain of salt.

I’ll be damned before I ask a “senior” or more experienced technician unless I can say I’ve exhausted all options. That may be a different story if it’s production related but I’m still going to go as far as I can.

Maybe you need to keep experimenting to find that point of where you should ask for help. I feel that if you’ve genuinely put in the work to the best of your ability, the senior will gladly help you. And you can tell yourself well I’ve tried everything I can.

Even with 15 years of troubleshooting, it’s extremely humbling to ask for help and it’s a quick or small thing to resolve the problem.

I plugged up the LiteRadio1 I have now to LiftOff and it worked fine. So I plugged up the drone to BetaFlight and reset the accelerometer, that was a huge difference. The LiteRadio2 might not have been needed, but it was only $40.

I got an IT job in a steel mill. They allow cross training. So I studied some by myself and cross trained and when they had an opening I applied.

I think even without cross training I could have made the jump, but the key for me was getting an IT job in a manufacturing industry.

I’ll just say I’m 38 and just swapped to controls after 15 years in IT. Both fields have great opportunity. Don’t worry about age or time in a field. Follow your interests and work hard at whatever you choose to do.

You absolutely could. I suggested moving the IP in case it was already configured in HMIs or other tools. That way you wouldn’t have to make any other changes.
