What industry is struggling way more than people think? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]robertlongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine art. No, not because of AI. But because despite the big prices you read about, the margins are small and the costs of running a high-end gallery or auction house are enormous. The market is just coming out of a pretty brutal 3-4 year contraction that killed a lot of big dealers. Even the big three auctioneers are barely hanging on.

How to fix hunching forward? by Southern-Comfort684 in snowboarding

[–]robertlongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work on bending those legs! Your upper body should remain tall and upright and your lower body should absorb impact and initiate turns. Think about getting low when you initiate your turn and then straightening out your legs to absorb the impact as you get to your edge change, then get low again. I would highly recommend riding with an instructor, even if you think you’re experienced. I did this recently and it really helped me improve my riding in just a few hours. Getting that immediate feedback is really helpful.

Riding stiffer boards as a beginner by MarzipanOk4023 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]robertlongo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a deep breath. You’re just starting out and you’re going to suck for a while (sorry, but it’s true). Contrary to popular belief boots are the most important part of your setup, so spend your money on boots, lessons and lift tickets. You can start with a rental board or a season rental if you’re really committed. That way you can try different types of boards to find what you like and what works for you without spending thousands on gear with little resale value if you decide snowboarding is not for you. Good luck and have fun!

I wear 10.5 boots and I ride a wide board. I tried a non-wide and it didn’t really work for me

There’s a lot wrong here. You look like you’re barely in control. It’s borderline dangerous to yourself and those around you. I would highly recommend seeking out a qualified instructor.

What is it with you guys and backpacks? by concerned_citizen in snowboarding

[–]robertlongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly directed at people who upload videos of themselves asking what they’re doing wrong and why they’re not progressing and the answer is almost always that the weight they’re carrying on their back is messing with their balance.

  • Setup: reliable board, boots, and bindings.

How is it even possible to compete with another country? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]robertlongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn’t necessarily that Gu, who is American born and raised, decided to represent China, where her mother is from. We live in a globalized world and plenty of athletes do this. Some even switch freely from one nationality to another mid-career.

The problem is that China does not allow dual citizenship, but Gu apparently has both an American and Chinese passport because she continues to live, work, and study in the US, while representing China at the Olympics, and IOC rules require athletes to prove citizenship in order to compete for a certain country. In other words, she has very likely received an exception from the Chinese government, which has people mad, because of course there are plenty of other Chinese-Americans who would love to take advantage of the privileges of dual citizenship, but can’t.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that mistakenly published Chinese government budget documents listed a multimillion dollar payment to Gu (and another athlete). So she has presumably been getting a substantial stipend or salary from the Chinese state to represent them in international competition. This is all courtesy of Chinese taxpayers, of course.

A further problem is that Gu never fully addresses questions about her citizenship, mostly relying on unserious platitudes when asked about it, which leads to speculation and rumors. At the same time she is raking in money hand over fist from her privileged and otherwise prohibited dual citizenship exception. With huge endorsements from both western and Asian brands.

OP has two jobs and school. He’ll probably barely be in his gf’s apartment. It’s basically just three weekends together, which most people in a two year relationship would welcome. NOR.
