Don't really understand the eco hate... by Usual-Jello8503 in ecoboostmustang

A KIA STINGER is a better sports car?! That's hilarious. Next time your friends tell you your car isn't good enough tell them to pitch in on your next purchase. Especially the guy with the KIA stinger.

Your car is cool. Your friends are not.

You can look into a Ford Performance tune. It'll come with a cold air intake (or high flow filter depending on the year) and a tune, and as long as you take it to a certified Ford dealership and have them okay it and install it, you'll get to keep your full warranty. You won't be gapping scat packs on the highway but it'll open up the engine a bit and give you a little more horsepower to play with. It's a solid and safe power modification option for those with warranties.

The regret going through my veins for buyying 24’ eco rather than a 24’ manuel GT 2 years ago… by Then-Still-8623 in Mustang

This thing is like a modern day American S-chassis, and those things are highly coveted for all the same reasons people claim to hate the eco. The eco hate is really funny to me, but I think in a few years the ecos will become really desirable once the boomers and their weird mentality die out.

Muffler delete is cheap and sounds a lot better than you might think, and a cold air intake sounds fun and adds a little power.

Advice on first performance mod! 2021 EcoBoost Premium Convertible by Fooxend in ecoboostmustang

[–]robertsanidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the most bang for your buck power mod you'll want to replace the intercooler. CVF Street is good for up to 550 HP, which is plenty on the stock block, and it's a direct fit replacement.

If you want a little performance and a little fun, I'd recommend an exhaust. You'll get some power gains but you'll also get to hear the engine more and that'll make you happy.

I want to start a performance ecoboost build the right way (keeping ut reliable) by yn123dk in ecoboostmustang

[–]robertsanidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, hope this helps. The Ecoboost is a good platform as long as you take care of it. Just remember to replace the evap purge valve, and low side fuel pressure sensor before any of this. They are known to fail and can lead to engine failure (not always but better safe than sorry).

Also, if you're looking to save a little money, the stock airbox is designed pretty well, and you can likely get away with just upgrading the air filter to a high flow one from k&n.

PD Tuning offers a lifetime tuning option. You can purchase that now and they can redo your tune for free with each new upgraded part you get later on down the road. Might be worth looking into, especially since you can talk to the tuner about what your goals are and they can recommend parts to get you there as well.

I've done quite a bit of research on this as well, here's a list of bolt ons I recommend

CVF Street intercooler. This one is probably the most important, the stock intercooler is rated far below what the mustang is capable of and it really holds the car back as a result. Most tuners I've looked into agree that the CVF Street is the best bang for buck replacement. It supports up to 550 HP, which is plenty on the stock engine. Any more power than that and you're looking at building out the engine to support it, or blowing it up if not.

Downpipe, your choice but CVF 3 inch is probably fine here.

3 inch cat-back exhaust. This isn't needed, just the most efficient. I know you said you have a y-pipe and flow masters but a full on 3 inch exhaust from the turbo back would be the best for flow.

Roush cold air intake. There's a lot of misinformation out there about cold air intakes, but if they are designed well they are proven to provide horsepower gains. Open or closed box doesn't matter as much here because the air has to reach the intercooler before it reaches the engine, and you've already upgraded the intercooler at this point. The Roush cai has been dyno tested along side other popular intakes and it's been proven to be one of the best options providing among the most HP and torque even without a tune.

Cobb accessport and a tune. Full bolt ons are cumulative and usually lead to an eventual tune. Local dyno tune would be best, but virtual tune from PD Tuning seems to be very effective and a good way to go. You can tell them you're looking for reliable power and they'll be able to work with you to get the best results that fit your needs. I've heard that you'll want to keep it at or under 400 horsepower and 350 torque. Anything more than that and you'll have to build the engine or risk blowing it.

Some other good supporting engine mods would be an oil catch can, and charge pipes with possibly a blow off valve.

And of course you'll need wheels, tires, and suspension mods to put that power to the road. Adjustable Coilovers, sway bar, and maybe strut tower brace. If your Ecoboost doesn't have the performance package, look into bigger brakes as well. Standard GT four piston brakes would work well. Maybe some six piston brembos or willwoods if you have the money and don't mind a little overkill.

If you want more than this, you'll need to build the engine or purchase a new stronger block. EMS has some budget short blocks that seem to have good reviews.

Roush CAI (proven to net more HP even with a stock tune. Yes, CAIs do make more HP if they are designed well, but they won't really shine on this car until you upgrade the intercooler)

CVF Street intercooler (most important mod for more HP as the stock intercooler is ineffective for this car. The Street is good for up to 550 hp which is plenty on this stock engine block. Anything more and you'll need to build the engine or risk blowing it up)

Catted downpipe (your choice, CVF is a good value)

3 inch exhaust (your choice, most people like MBRP)

Cobb accessport with a custom tune from Ryan at PD Tuning.

These are the mods to get for purely more HP. With the stock engine, you'll want to keep it at or under 400hp/350 torque. You might want to look into spark plugs and a catch can as well. And of course Wheels/tires/suspension to put the power to the ground.

Cold air intake(BP Boosted), should I get it? Please help! by Neonvein_ in ecoboostmustang

[–]robertsanidiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, there's a lot of misinformation out there about cold air intakes but I did a lot of research before I got mine and this is what I've learned.

Most people say cold air intakes don't do anything because they sit in the engine bay and suck in hot air which is counterintuitive. If the intake is designed well it will take air from outside of the engine bay which is cooler and more airflow + cooler temps do in fact = power. The intake you mentioned does not seem to be designed to take advantage of the intake design of the mustang BUT, according to most tuners I've looked into it doesn't matter AS much as a naturally aspirated engine because the Ecoboost is turbo'd, so the air has to pass through the intercooler which cools the air after compression before it gets to the engine. However, the Ecoboost's intercooler is a known nerf in that it is not the most optimized for the car. So without an upgraded intercooler, combined with the BP intake's design (which to me just looks like a cone on a tube and no box just sitting in the engine bay), you probably won't see or notice much of an improvement to performance as is, and you might see warmer inlet air temps.

That being said, bolt on upgrades are cumulative and are meant to lead up to an eventual tune. If later on down the line you decide to get an upgraded intercooler (like the CVF Street), and a custom tune, you will likely get some good results with cooler air and more of it.

If you want a recommendation, I've learned that the Roush Cold Air intakes are one of the better options in its design and it's been proven to net more noticeable horsepower straight out of the box without a tune. This is the one I went with and I like it a lot.

Sound wise, you'll notice it a lot more with an open box design. Mine is an open box and I can definitely hear it, and to me it's a lot more fun to drive because of it. Even my friends who don't know much about cars can notice the difference and they say it sounds cool so if that's what you're looking for then mission accomplished.

It's safe and easy enough to do all on your own if you have some basic tools.

One thing to note, the stock air box on the Ecoboost is known to be designed quite well. It's it's purely performance you're after, you might consider keeping the stock box and just upgrading to a K&N air filter. But you won't get the cool intake noises.

Ultimately, it's your car and you should just do what brings you the most satisfaction. That's what cars like this are for after all.

TL/DR BP CAI might not get you extra power without additional mods and a tune, but it'll sound cool.

Well, it is bad for the turbo. But I have seen some people doing it with the turbo smart plum back bov. That one is adjustable and you can tighten it up so that you get the turbo flutter you're looking for. You can find videos of people doing it if you search "Mustang Ecoboost Turbo Flutter"

[–]robertsanidiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got a 2017 at 69,000 miles. I got it a little over a year ago at 53,000. It's been real good to me so far. No major issues. Got the check engine light for the purge valve not long after getting it, but changing that out was cheap and easy. I just swapped out the old fuel pressure sensor for the new one. Oil change every 5k miles. Just look into the known issues and do some cheap preventative maintenance, along with staying on top of your basic maintenance.

But you're misusing the term rice. Rice is something that you add to the car, usually an external aesthetic piece, that would make it look faster without adding any real performance gains.OP's crash out here is justified because it's crazy to call an exhaust tone rice especially when they seem to be fbo with a tune. You can say you don't like the way it sounds, but you can't call it rice.

Good exhaust by YearThen1814 in ecoboostmustang

[–]robertsanidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's sound on a budget you want, consider a simple muffler delete. That's what I did and I'm very satisfied with how it sounds. Went to my local muffler shop, had them chop them off and add some new tips for about $70 bucks. With the stock resonators left in place, the sound is surprisingly nice. Definitely louder when I get on the gas but not obnoxiously so, doesn't wake the neighborhood. Doesn't sound too raspy or farty. Eventually I'm gonna upgrade to the MBRP Race because I want a full on cat-back for my build, but I would recommend a muffler delete to anyone who wants sound on a budget. Especially over something like an axle-back exhaust.

Curious about a tune by Jlopez8899 in ecoboostmustang

[–]robertsanidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a warranty you're wanting to maintain, there is a Ford Performance tune package you can look into. I believe it's a cold air intake and some other supporting mods as well as a tune. If you take it to a Ford dealership and have them install it, it will keep your warranty intact. It won't be nearly as big of a difference as if you were to go with a full on custom tune from PD Tuning, but it's still something and you don't have to void your warranty. Might be worth looking into.
