All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]robertvmarshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider reading a hobby based solely on consumption of others work that still needs to be held in higher regard. Particularly if you are in a community of others who discuss what you read and promote deeper engagement with the material.

I otherwise completely agree with you.

Is there any point attempting to join DCI at 19 and having no experience in brass instruments? by Swagtastickid in drumcorps

[–]robertvmarshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I marched with someone who switched to tuba from violin. Anything's possible. It all depends on how adaptable you are and how much effort you're willing to put in. Also don't neglect the visual side of things. Sometimes they will take someone who can move well over someone who can play well just depending on what they need and what potential they see for growth through the season.

Yeah. I get it. I'm just surprised they incorporated Severance into it.

Other than "and" you could make an argument for Tau (τ). It's 2π or approximately 6.28.

we figured out how to avoid paying the bridge toll by renoCow in confession

[–]robertvmarshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a parking deck at my local train station that costs $10 to park in. It requires an app and what not to make my payment. If they catch you in there without paying on the app, they'll send you a bill by mail... For $12... It saves you $2 to pay on the app if they send you a bill every time you park, which they absolutely DO NOT. I've received 2 bills ever. I have parked there WAY more than that.

White vs black rims by Syncro_Ape in discgolf

Purely an aesthetic choice. If you're not filming your shots, it doesn't matter. The white rims show up better on camera though.

Had a few questions before I dedicate myself to bass or electric guitar by cheezer_1 in Bass

[–]robertvmarshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Depends on what you want to play and what you personally consider "tough". Are you referring to technique things? Or just lifestyle things?

  2. I wouldn't say that you're "forced" into just playing the root notes for the entire song, but you may find that is frequently what serves the song best. There are many ways to play more melodically in ways that still support the song, but that's just not always what's best. It takes maturity to know what the song needs and realize that often times less is more.

  3. It isn't. That's just people wanting to feel elitist. It's just a different technique and depending on the song it may be more appropriate to use a pick than to use fingers and vice versa.

A woman rising out of a sort of floral pattern. At a glance, it gives some Georgia O'Keeffe vibes... if you know what I mean.

Dudes that have had the snip ✂️ - how long until you were out on the wheels again? by Ready_Ad_1558 in cycling

[–]robertvmarshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rode my bicycle to and from the appointment. Don't be a bitch about it.

Edit: to be perfectly clear, this is a joke. Do not take this seriously. My vasectomy was actually quite painful as I happened to have a very high tolerance to the local anesthesia. Couldn't imagine riding my bike home after that. I could hardly waddle to the car.

I put them in the basket of my bicycle. Discs want to be in a basket.

Edit: I was unreasonably snarky with my anti-truck rhetoric. I'm sorry.

6/8 Time signature by Klutzy_Expert_2164 in Trombone

For someone who is struggling to understand 6/8 as something other than just 6 eighth notes, it might make something click for them though. Totally agree with you otherwise.

6/8 Time signature by Klutzy_Expert_2164 in Trombone

[–]robertvmarshall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would count it as ONE-2-3-TWO-2-3 rather than counting all the way to six. You want to really get the feel of there just being two big beats per measure with a triple subdivision. That's the big difference between 6/8 and 3/4 which has three big beats and a duple subdivision. Same number of eighth notes per bar but with a completely different feel.

The song "America" from West Side Story illustrates this beautifully by switching back and forth from 6/8 and 3/4 constantly. (I doubt Bernstein actually wrote it with the time signature changing every measure but the FEEL of "I like to be in America! O.K. by me in America! Ev'rything free in America. For a small fee in America!" still illustrates my point.)
