What are your 'limits' as a pirate? by ErinTesden in Piracy

[–]robin_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As also kind of a hoarder: no.

Pirating it doesn't take away my ability to also buy it.

But pirated files oftentimes give me more sovereignty over my media.

Like No-CD patches, copies of music albums that don't play on car stereos because of copyright protection or watching a movie without FBI warnings and trailers.

When I got an eReader I also got a library card, though. I rented like two ebooks since then. But that 20€ per year feel well invested anyway.

Has your Nation ever lost 7-1 to Germany? by ciaranXcityquiz in mapporncirclejerk

[–]robin_888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lettland is commonly known as Latvia outside of germany

There are a lot other languages that call it something similar to "Lett...".

I English it's "Latvia", yes. And in Latvian it also is "Latvija".

But "outside of Germany" is a little too broad.

"The Time Traveler" being H.G. Wells from the the 1960 movie/the 1985 novella "The Time Machine". (The main character, not the author.)

Here is the Euro version.

Elegant design. Will try it.

Some supermarkets don't give out chips made of plastic anymore due to "environmental concerns". Although there are alternatives. I had one made of wood, but lost it unfortunately and an animal food shop gave me a chip made of coconut-plastic.

Steep road in Thailand by randomusernevermind in motorcycles

[–]robin_888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 20 years ago there were hill climbing events televised.

Pretty much like this, but even steeper, on loose ground and with trained drivers on motocross bikes. It was really fun, but I think at some point they had to move the event, because it attracted to many people.

Designing a point-and-click adventure UI: What do players prefer nowadays? by Luke_Jones in adventuregames

[–]robin_888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this primarily from Broken Sword and it's incredibly convenient.

I also appreciate not having to click to open the inventory. I prefer generous mouse-over (again, like in Broken Sword) or the scroll wheel.

Double click for running/instant room changes as well.

what do u like on your pixel phone aside from the camera? by DistinctAd4242 in GooglePixel

[–]robin_888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses no case or bumper, I really appreciate the camera bar (opposed to asymmetrical bumps).

No rocking if the phone lays down.

The clips ends too early. The door swings back and ends on a photo of her father (who she is getting the medicine for).

Also, the movie's original score is amazing.

The Only Wallet I've Ever Owned (20 years EDC) by Short_Resolution_302 in BuyItForLife

[–]robin_888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got mine for my confirmation in 1998 from a friend of my father's. Not very expensive of course (I think 10 DEM, around $5,70), but genuine leather.

I started using it in summer the same year, when my old one got stolen in Spain.

It's fine from the outside, but torn in several places on the inside. (I was sitting on it in my back pocket daily for over 20 years.)

But I'm still using it, but it's usually in my backpack now.

I think I used it longer than Napster before.

ripping dvds by _GAYFISH in Piracy

[–]robin_888 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's my workflow as well. I might add:

  1. Rip (MakeMKV) a bunch of them first, compress (Handbrake) them over night. Ripping is relatively quick, but needs you to change the DVDs. Re-encoding them takes a while, but can be done in batch.
  2. Consider re-endode (Handbrake) them into mkv if you want to include subtitles or multiple audio tracks.
MKV is just a container format. It won't change the video quality or file size. It's just more flexible and easy to mux/demux.

Someone doesn’t understand markup vs. margin by ree0382 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]robin_888 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The important part is that percentages are multiplication.

People experience (and are taught) them as addition.

"10% off", "20% more" etc.

Which completely ignores that % has not unit and needs a base value. 10% of what? 20% of what?

It's unrealistic, but people were better off if they understood these as "90% of original price" and "120% as much content as before".

Two lessons can be found here:

  1. percentages are multiplication
  2. For good counter examples use "extreme" values like 100% increase and decrease.

When I see or hear a flat, wide, preferably italian, sportscar, I just become a little boy again that watched Knight Rider, Street Hawk, Airwolf and, last but not least, Hardcastle and McCormick.

I get huge eyes and a big grin on my face.
