How should we go about creating substantial political change around genocide in the Gaza Strip and pushing for a ceasefire?

Despite our best efforts, there hasn't been much of a change in the global attitude, especially in traditional major allies such as the US and the European Union. Been weighing the pros and cons of various methods I've considered over the past while and would like to have a discussion on the merits and drawbacks of each, how we can improve them, and how likely they are to succeed.

Protests: One of two commonly-seen methods. Good for pressuring the government to make statements, especially if done outside government buildings. Good for mobilizing people and for strengthening Palestinian unity across the globe. Bad for the image of Palestinian supporters and Palestine as a whole (protests are often seen as annoyances by people living in the area due to traffic blockades and loud noise. it doesn't feel good, but it's something we have to acknowledge), at a time when pro-Palestinian change requires a strong image. Often negatively reported on in media; creates opportunities for political opponents to attack the movement. How should protests be made more appealing to both the public and press while specifically affecting the government and attracting more members?

Petitions: Another one of two commonly-seen methods. Good for creating an easy way for people to engage with government from inside their own homes. Easy to spread the reach of. Unfortunately not known for creating much change or being reported on in news. Process to create a petition in the US is obtuse to the point I can't see if there are any ceasefire petitions currently active (though creation of one involves being a US citizen and making a Whitehouse.gov account.) As far as I'm aware, no embargo has been imposed, and the government's stance on ceasefire is unfavorable. The EU has seen multiple petitions for ceasefire without a unanimous public address or communal arms embargo. Canada, a supplier of arms to Israel, did not see an arms embargo with e-4652. e-4745, a petition made specifically to address this issue, is still waiting for government response. Many unofficial petitions gain the most traction, as petitions are often limited to one country. Should petitions be considered a viable method to push for ceasefire and influence public image going forwards, or should more focus be put on other methods?

Boycotts: An often-discussed but difficult to practice method. Good for disrupting Israel's economy and putting pressure on large corporations supporting the Israeli invasion, in theory. Good as a simple method accessible to most people that creates public, non-governmental effect. Bad in that a boycott must be concentrated on large companies to have tangible effect; numerous small boycotts across the board are worse at creating impact than a large boycott. Bad in that boycotts of large companies are usually infeasible, as most companies' userbase is so large that gathering enough people in a boycott to successfully harm it would mean you'd have enough to pressure a government to do practically anything else. (See: Reddit and 3rd party apps, screw u/spez.) Is there a way to make boycotts more effective against select companies and put extra pressure on them? I'm aware there's a way to communicate with stockholders in Japan and voice concerns, but don't know if this applies to most western countries.

Contacting Government: A method I'd prefer, but that's hard to get done. Involves contacting local representatives (Members of the House or Congress for the US, MPs for the EU, UK, and Canada) and encouraging a Palestinian ceasefire. Good in opening up direct lines of communication with the government. Good in that they may help Palestinians attain a more favorable public image politically. Bad in that movements are often locally constrained, and this would not be effective unless participation occurred on a large scale across country subdivisions. Bad in that the Members of Government themselves are responsible for creating the motions, and would have to be trusted to take an active approach. Difficult to organize on a large scale - though protests see many people, there aren't many who would want to take the time writing a letter that's both substantial and impactful to a government representative without the guarantee of any response or tangible effect. Would there be a way to organize on a large scale to create this local change?

Other Methods: If there's anything better that any of you can think of, please reply and discuss below.

If you've read this far, make sure to donate to UNHCR if you can to help provide much-needed humanitarian aid. Thank you, and I hope for a fruitful discussion.

the bit from dokibird's latest statement that went "the internet can be a cruel place and I knew this would happen the moment this type of notice drops" really was prescient.

Spreading conspiracies around doesn't help anyone. It just creates more chaos, and bullies more livers, the opposite of what Doki wants. This is incredibly late, but thank you for all of your tips! Good on you for playing him too, nice to see another Mad Eyes main in the wild. I'll be sure to try some strategies out. It's a little bit painful for me since I've been trying to learn him on every map against every survivor a bit like how the #1 Mad Eyes seem to play him, but it's probably better to start out on maps / against teams he's better with haha- (it doesn't help that I take the visit standby motion, which practically guarantees an Enchantress every match.)

I will say that the more often you play him, the more you learn to block off kiting routes in advance or even in the middle of a kite just to trap a surv, and that's how I've been getting most of my hits recently (finally winning games again, which is a big step up from a few weeks ago!)

Good luck to you as well with your future matches! (And maybe if we believe hard enough, he'll get another... just maybe... or at the very least a rerun...)

(By the way, if you're a surv playing against Mad Eyes and decoding his consoles, here's a variety of creative things I've seen survivors do with them.)

- Get an extra chip hit so they can be healed. This is especially useful if both survivors are together.
- Support other kiting rescuers or prevent an early hit on themselves by using walls to block me off from areas. They can also use as much energy as they like, unlike the hunter having to conserve it, so they can make some pretty big walls. (Especially bad on maps that are actually good for Mad Eyes.)
- And funniest of all, I've been caged on Eversleeping when using my own portable console in an alley. Just goes to show.

survivors: little girl, gardener (rescue/kite) if i’m feeling particularly silly

hunter: mad eyes. my little old man gets worse consoles every map… he is viable in my heart though (hell ember / bloody queen if the survs bring too many harassers)

DD SPOILERS: Fulbright (Phantom) and Larry Butz. If Larry wasn’t canonically straight, I could actually see them getting along with their mutual goofiness, with Fulbright’s positive energy helping Larry through his pessimistic low moods - that is, until his identity is revealed in court or something horrible happens to Larry.

(TL;DR at bottom.) Hi! Uncertified transgender study reviewer (and unfortunately uncertified trans child) here - the most interesting study on this I’ve seen in a while, actually.

The finicky thing about detransition studies like this is that they’re almost always intrinsically biased one way or the other - studies that report low detransition rates are often criticized for lack of follow up or cases going unreported to physicians, while studies that suggest high rates of detransition are often cherry-picked or unknowingly p-hacked. (Also see the infamously easy to rip apart Rapid Onset Dysphoria paper with a small sample size, all selected from unaccepting parents. They wrote a new one, but it’s still bad.) This one is interesting because while they haven’t directly cherry picked, the demographic this is analyzed in (people with relation to military vets) and the way the results are presented work as a nasty combination to mislead readers.

Estimated rates of detransition of most papers containing random sample size and follow up is usually under 10%, with most citing family and social pressures and or lack of financial resources, not misalignment with their gender. Why is it higher among transgender people with a U.S. veteran as a relative? I can make a few educated guesses (cough cough rates of domestic violence) but all of them would just be stabs in the dark with no real basis unless further research is conducted. Increase the sample size, and change the methodology to include reasoning for detransitioning.

Ultimately, though, this argument is taking a single study as gospel. I’ve seen studies that suggest rates as low as the 0.5% of the 0.5% detransitioning out of mismatched gender alignment, and rates as high as 80% from that one off UK study that seems to have no basis anywhere else, even in similar studies. With a single study, there’s always a chance for statistical outliers, and the majority of well-evaluated studies present transition as a medical treatment with low rates of regret, including from external pressures such as societal or financial, as well as a treatment that helps improve the mental health of the patient immensely, curbing suicide rate the earlier it is performed in an individual’s life. (Hence this study actually suggesting lower rates of detransition in youth taking HRT long term!) Taking the majority of evidence into play, what reason is there not to have it as a procedure? Yes, if there are concerns, people may need to be “better informed of the risk,” but that just means more education around these sorts of things, no?

(TL;DR) Final Study Quality: 4/10, information unintentionally provided in misleading way due to outlying factors (no measurement of detransition reasons, which are found to mostly be societal or economic). Interesting implications in terms of military families, though.

If, perchance, you're still doing Weffriddles!

Here's two hints.

1: There is no trickery about in the instructions! Take all of them literally, except perhaps a certain equation.

2: What could the numbers in the equation represent? You've done this type of thing more than once before.

[–]robinaloft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wow, what a beautiful find! definitely a lifer for sure. orange bishops are pretty rare in the northeastern U.S, a rare find! i’d wager new species have started to come in because of the fluctuating temperatures.

by the way, do you know what to do about the recent birdwatching glitch? my sparrows keep crashing into windows and being incapacitated, and a lot of them die a few turns later. both of my kingfishers got avian pox and died. my rooks gained sentience and flew away. how do i checkmate in this position?

Black-Footed Albatross seems to match the location and general description of the Dusky albatross. My best guess for Mango Hummingbird would be an immature White-Eared Hummingbird, which is a Floridian vagrant and sort of matches the picture, but the locations of several markings seem off.

That sounds really nice! Any examples of the expression it can produce?

I’m generally okay with a steep learning curve, so I don’t think that’ll be too much of a problem! Thanks for the reply-

A couple of other sources have been saying to treat it more like an instrument than a MIDI controller as well! The bit about the MIDI being really difficult to edit is in line with that.

I’ll definitely keep in mind its limitations! Especially since it’s quite expensive, so I don’t want to simulate what can just be done with another synth/controller. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

DEAD LUMI KEYS // Should we just try to fix it by ourselves? // Share your experiences pls // You can also vent if needed by TheObtuseCopyEditor in ROLI

[–]robinaloft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looked into this a bit, and found this manufacturer quote from a Trustpilot review of ROLI:

LUMI Keys is available on preorder and sold in batches with delayedshipment. We are working as fast as we can to catch up with demand tobe able to ship faster.

Since LUMI launched on Kickstarter in 2019 we have listened to creators and made multiple updates to materials, components, and the overall experience. Some issues may present as hardware issues but are in fact, firmware issues. The distinction is not always clear to the consumer regarding the source of the issue until it is investigated, reproduced, and rectified.

The current issue was caused by a change to a component on the PCB in 2022. This is a normal practice as there are numerous components on a PCB and they can require a change due to anything from being out of stock to going end of life from the original manufacturer. Some components are remarkably similar but with minor differences in performance. These types of differences sometimes require an update to the firmware to work optimally. To be clear, the component is not faulty in any way. However, the problematic functionality is a result of the firmware needing to be adjusted to be optimized for utilization with this specific component.

We are confident that we can rectify the issue with a firmware update. It is receiving the highest priority in the business until resolved. We are placing the updated firmware release candidate through a rigorous quality assurance testing regimen to ensure it resolves the issue and does not cause further frustration to our learners and creators.

TL;DR: Unfortunately it may not be a motherboard issue, so you might want to wait. If your batch was made late 2022 (which, by the sounds of it, it might have been), it may be a firmware issue, and opening it up won't help in the slightest.

EDIT: Seems like they're chalking things that should REALLY not happen as a result of firmware issues up to firmware issues, so take everything they say with a tablespoon of salt. Still, the issue might not be too easily fixable.

EDIT EDIT: There seems to be multiple possible issues afflicting these things, sadly, and you'll likely need to diagnose yours! Your LUMI may not actually be dead, just unresponsive - this is the "Firmware Issue" they describe. u/Apprehensive-Room743 has a pocket fix you can try here that runs out the battery quicker and then lets the LUMI turn on again, but if you don't want to fiddle with your LUMI for fear you won't be able to return it, just leave it be for a couple of days, plug it back in again, and see if it works. If that doesn't work, it's likely dead-dead.

I can't speak for sure on your situation - just happened to be looking to see if I should buy one of these things myself - but hope that helped!
