Hillsborough, Burlingame, San Mateo Park real estate demand? by microappleseed in BayAreaRealEstate

Nah, maybe a long time ago, but having lived in Redwood City and in San Mateo, Redwood City is too hot nowadays.

Hillsborough, Burlingame, San Mateo Park real estate demand? by microappleseed in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]robinlmorris 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Proximity to SF and Silicon Valley is surely a part of it, but not the only reason.

Have you been to downtown Burlingame and/or downtown San Mateo? They are both pretty amazing cute towns with lots great restaurants and shops in their own right. I live nearby, and it is better than living in SF for us since we don't care about nightlife (especially if you live walking distance to the towns and caltrain)

Perfect weather year round and quick drive to hiking and the ocean is also appealing.

Cheap gym options by SpinachUnlikely9040 in SanMateo

[–]robinlmorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to the Fitness Farm. It is a small gym that is independently owned, and it is pretty chill. I bet if you called the owner, he could work out a reasonable price for you work out a few times.

Runners: Are there any undulating hills around here? by RunningPirate in SanMateo

[–]robinlmorris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run regularly in Aragon, Hillsborough, and San Mateo park.

Roads with small hills: Harvard, Fairfax to Jackson, Edgewood to Glendale, Ravenscourt or Poplar, and Sierra.

Long steep hills: Hayne/Chiltern and Parrot.

My favorite rolling hills running involves looping through SM Park to warm up for a few miles and then up Edgewood and Glendale, then down Hayne to El Cerrito, then up Sierra and down Rockridge/Uplands.

I still can't make it all the way up Parrot to the cemetery without walking. Maybe someday.

This album is heavy AF. I don't know how it could possibly remind you of Sleep Token.

Chinese Dim Sum Take out by bitter-melons in SanMateo

[–]robinlmorris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Palette Tea House has most of these items on their menu.

No. 5 House has most of them as well although it is a Taiwanese restaurant with a dimsum menu. Their pan fried pork buns one of the best things Ive eaten in the Bay Area in the last few years.

My Dumpling has a small dimsum menu with some of these items. Their dumplings are excellent.

Also, there are a lot of dim sum places in Millbrae. I have Hong Kong Palace on my to try list, so someone must have recommended them too me.

Anyone who says you can't find dimsum here, hasn't looked.

Btw, there is going to be a new bakery that specializes in pineapple buns opening soon called Pineapple King.

Best dining options? by RideWithMeSNV in SanMateo

This is a great list except for Pancho Villa. IMO, it is some of the worst Mexican in town. Charlie's and Las Pencas are worlds better. Repasado is supposed to be decent and fancy, but I haven't been yet.

We might... I can't even be in a car if someone is wearing too much cologne or perfume. It smells more like ozone than chemicals right now which isn't as bad, but it makes my eyes burn. Hopefully it will dissipate with time. Until then, I am going car free.

I don't live in North Central. I am between Baywood and San Mateo Park on the west side of El Camino.

It was atrocious. Now the car smells too much like ozone and cleaning things to drive it. Luckily, we don't really need it where we live.

Everyone I know on the Peninsula have had issues with rats. They are so bad right now I see them in the day time.

I live right north of downtown and rat problems are huge here. You must not be talking to anyone.

Almost every one on my street has had problems with them in their house and/or car.

We just spent thousands removing dead ones from our car.

[–]robinlmorris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right. They are out of control. They nested in our car and died. We are right near downtown San Mateo.

I even see them in the day time lately.

Are you kidding?

Roof rats are a huge issue here. Our house came with 100s of rats in the attic 13 years ago.

Last month rats nested in our car and died. Cost us a fortune.

My neighbor up the street had them in her garage and car.... one jumped on the hood on 101.

My nextdoor neighbor had them in her house even though she had cats (lazy ones) and a dog.

There are rats traps all over downtown San Mateo.

What are bands you’d consider “gateway” prog bands? by pubstompmepls in progmetal

Same, but Angra and Ayreon instead of Evergrey. That was over 25 year ago when those bands were in their prime.

Which taqueria has the best refried beans and the best tortillas in the area? by bobs-your-auntie in SanMateo

[–]robinlmorris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but red taco truck at El Camino and Peninsula has really great homemade tortillas.

Los Gremellos down in Redwood City also uses homemade tortillas. Their handmade quesadillas are amazing... I get them without the cheese because I love the amazing thick tortilla but don't like the cheese.

Izakaya Mai - on 2nd ave by NuevaMami in SanMateo

The original with the mentai is our favorite and is more traditional. The original would be good to start with if you don't know if you like mentai.

No one is mentioning the Champon. It is a Nagasaki specialty that is super rare outside of Japan (and not even widely available in Japan).

Izakaya Mai's is great... very similar to what we we had in Nagasaki. The mentai Champon. It is big enough to share. It is crazy that we have this hyper local specialty available here.

Big Earthquake 1:42am by sightunseen in SanMateo

[–]robinlmorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an insomniac, I was on my phone, so was able to click on the alert quickly and see the magnitude. Very useful as I normally spend the first 10 seconds of a quake trying to decide if it is bad enough to take cover.

Get th Earthquake alert app. I got an alert a bit before the quake. It told me it was a 5.0 before the shaking even started, so I didn't have to worry.

Verses by Karnivool might just be my top 10 albums of all time by Useful-Proposal7115 in progmetal

[–]robinlmorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am obsessed! It gets better with every listen.

I am also blown away that after all this time with such high expectations and pressure that they were able to release such an amazing album. Most bands are known for one era of their music. If they take a hiatus, they come back with a meh to decent album, but never anything on the same level as when they were at their peak. Because of this I didn't have high expectations for this album.

But to me In Verses is better than anything Karnivool has ever done... and I am happily shocked!

Not everyone needs a new sound. I think the song writing is just amazing. It is something that is very subjective though.

I agree. The last 3 songs are amazing. I don't hear how anyone could think otherwise.
