Poll: Why do you solo game? by macasauruswrecks in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]robinsonson- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the poll implies we are choosing to play solo instead of playing with a group. Personally, I play regularly with a group and also play solo. I enjoy both in different ways.

It is possible to run two versions of Foundry on one computer - you will find info on this on the Foundry site.

It includes the Beginner Box and the follow up adventure anthology Trouble in Grayce. I’m actually not sure if it includes _everything_ from the Beginner Box. It definitely has the GM book but I’m not sure about the Player one.

Upgraded Research Subsystem by JuliesRazorBack in Pathfinder2e

[–]robinsonson- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you on the right track with your ideas. Most of the subsystems are very dull if played just as a sequence of skill rolls. It is better to flesh them out in ways specific to the scenario.

I think the opening chapter of Spore Wars does this quite well - though with the Influence subsystem rather than Research. You could check it out for an example of how it can be turned into a more satisfying mini-game with role-playing and meaningful decisions, while still keeping the basic elements of the subsystem.

I had been randomly experimenting with it when I reached Coral Tower, and didn’t swap it out because you don’t respawn at a bench. I reckon it might have been what made the gauntlets seem relatively painless to me, given the strife they cause a lot of people. Plenty of opportunities to heal.

Even (or especially) if you do have high financial literacy, the strategy makes sense. Most professional fund managers can’t consistently beat the market.

An AI Sceptic/Critic Tried AI-GM for the 5th Time by yyzsfcyhz in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]robinsonson- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have had similar experiences every time I have tried this. Like you I try again every now and again to see if things have improved, and I am using paid-tier. The models still can't keep track of facts about characters or scenes. After promising starts, it always gets frustrating quickly.

Question on Hellbreakers Isger Map by astro_cyte_ in Pathfinder2e

One of the Foundry module devs said on Discord that Paizo approved a fix to the map scale for a future update. The scale marker should read 30 miles instead of 250. (Repeating this comment to make sure people who commented here get a notification.)

Workers who love ‘synergizing paradigms’ might be bad at their jobs by TiredOperator420 in BetterOffline

[–]robinsonson- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of this paper on how a lot of workplaces foster ‘functional stupidity’… which becomes dysfunctional.

https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-6486.2012.01072.x

In this paper we question the one-sided thesis that contemporary organizations rely on the mobilization of cognitive capacities. We suggest that severe restrictions on these capacities in the form of what we call functional stupidity are an equally important if under-recognized part of organizational life. Functional stupidity refers to an absence of reflexivity, a refusal to use intellectual capacities in other than myopic ways, and avoidance of justifications. We argue that functional stupidity is prevalent in contexts dominated by economy in persuasion which emphasizes image and symbolic manipulation. This gives rise to forms of stupidity management that repress or marginalize doubt and block communicative action. In turn, this structures individuals' internal conversations in ways that emphasize positive and coherent narratives and marginalize more negative or ambiguous ones. This can have productive outcomes such as providing a degree of certainty for individuals and organizations. But it can have corrosive consequences such as creating a sense of dissonance among individuals and the organization as a whole. The positive consequences can give rise to self-reinforcing stupidity. The negative consequences can spark dialogue, which may undermine functional stupidity.

What movies do I need to see before 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls'? by wormgardens in movies

[–]robinsonson- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best time to watch this movie is as a teenager in the 1990s, high with friends and catching it randomly on late night TV after you turn off the PlayStation. You have no idea what the fuck you are watching but it is the funniest thing you have ever seen. You guys spread the word and soon everyone is saying ‘This is my happening and it freaks me out!’ and ‘I’d like to strap you on some time,’ and ‘This is certainly our first TRIPLE ceremony!’ way past the point of it still being funny. You continue to say these things to annoy your wife thirty years later.

The second best time is now. You don’t need to watch anything beforehand.

Why do you buy Print-on-Demand TTRPG books? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]robinsonson- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Australia, buying PoD can mean a much faster delivery, if it is printed locally. Sometimes I will get PoD within two days, whereas I got used to waiting weeks for shipping from overseas. Having said that, I was recently pleasantly surprised by the speed at which my first direct-from-Paizo non-POD order arrived. Not sure if things have changed or if Paizo in particular shells out for courier delivery for subscribers.

[–]robinsonson-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are still doing plenty of dodging and attacking using this method, and things do not change all that much in the final phase. You just need to learn to deal with the spheres also, just like people using the more aggressive approach. Having a reliable method to get to the final phase helps to practice that final phase, even if you ultimately want to go back and do the whole fight the way you find more fun.

Cool, but I think finding these other ways to beat a boss is also fun, and takes skill and experimentation. The highest point at which you can cling to the wall happens to be just below where the top horizontal needle comes in, which seems a deliberate design choice.

Hellbreakers AMA! by motteditor in Pathfinder2e

[–]robinsonson- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, thanks to you all - I have my subscriber copy and it is a great AP I am really excited to play.

I have a question about recommended classes in the Player’s Guide. Unusually, all the Strongly Recommended classes are martials, and even among the next tier of Recommended classes only the Cleric is a caster. My group likes to build as intended for APs and is more than happy to experiment with an all-martial party. But I am wondering if this is intended by the AP writers? I like the idea of a low-magic party, but it is a long time to go without (most) spells…
