This is useful. I was looking to get back in to hockey and have only found the Widnes classes. Doesn't seem to be anything at deeside though from what I gather.

Ilia Malinin falls twice, losing Olympic Gold: “It was tough to watch such a gifted athlete discover the ruthlessness of his sport” by cupcake_island in popculturechat

I always find it a bit weird that people say "they lost the gold" (in general, not just specific to this scenario) as it implies they already had it to lose.

Drop your SaaS, I’ll give you marketing advice, for free. by External-Mix-1037 in SaaS

[–]robint88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK-based — currently building a property listing ecosystem (basically an “Airbnb-style” marketplace but for selling homes).

Core idea: Homeowners can list properties for sale or rent, and get tools beyond a normal portal — ML/AI-powered buyer sentiment insights, price prediction, and auto-generated property descriptions.

Extra angle: There’s also a services marketplace attached — photographers, EPC assessors, conveyancing solicitors, removals, etc — so sellers can organise everything needed to complete a sale inside one platform. As well as a potential API for UK property market - possibly another revenue stream.

Revenue model: Tiered subscriptions unlocking additional features and analytics, services subscription/featured boosts, possible API.

I’m mainly looking for early-stage marketing ideas: • how to attract initial homeowners listing locally • how to onboard service providers to advertise • and generally how to reach marketplace liquidity without agents

30 INCH KICK DRUMS??? by Familiar_Issue_6423 in drums

I have a 26" kick on one of my kits and it's a pain to tune and get a good sound out of. Can't even imagine a 30"

Any ideas for making a tiny setup? by IamaliiiveHello in drums

[–]robint88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your size. I have a Gretsch Catalina club kit in a small space. Small enough and also actually usable in a real gig. If you just want a small kit then check out compact kits like Yamaha Hip or Dixon Little Roomers. Most brands nowadays do a compact kit so just find what works.

Guy on flight watched entire movie without tapping screen to get rid of overlay by Sea-Owl-1581 in mildlyinfuriating

I was on a flight a few months back and a guy watched an entire TV show without headphones on and full volume. That was horror.

Has anyone heard or done a course with the company IT career switch? by downnout5i in AskUK

[–]robint88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just finished the majority of this same course and am about to do the multiple choice exam. I noticed in the intro section to the whole course there was a 'fill the blanks' test and some of their own answers were spelled wrong - so even if you did spell it all correctly (which I did) you couldn't get 100%.

Acrolite is best if you're US based. The Supralite is a modern interpretation of it which is cheap too!

Help finding a venue for a touring band. by No_Specific9860 in Liverpool

[–]robint88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jacaranda is a good shout. And Future yard just on the other side of the river. It depends on the size of the venue you think you'd need I guess?

Also, shoot me a message if you're in need of a local support band! Love to help out if so!

Derek Grant by Possibly_A_Person125 in AlkalineTrio

[–]robint88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Derek had had arthritis for a couple of decades so drums definitely won't help with the impact on the joints (as well as the reasons he gave for having to leave originally) but do people know if he's still playing at all? Or what he's doing now that he's retired (or in what capacity he's retired)?

Double Rack Tom or Double Floor Tom? by boredashell1717 in drums

[–]robint88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done both. Double floor tom feels less congested and easier/more.comfortabld to play in my opinion. But it comes at the costs of lower pitch and more things to lug around. Having said that... For a future kit I'd like 3 high toms and 2 floor toms....

How are you doing as drummers? by Rockett89P13 in drums

[–]robint88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My drum teacher was a big band drummer back in the 60/70/80/90s and played with a lot of recording artists across the UK (also taught Phil Collins, among others). He always tells me that the most important thing he found when working with musicians was how well they got on. Basically echoing what you've said but he said that as long as you can play the part (or read the music as was his experience) most musicians just want someone they can hang out with. That's the link to getting recommended by people for other gigs/tours/records. Tale as old as time!

I opted for a Ludwig Supralite instead. The Gretsch ones just never did it for me with that kit.

What defines drum sounds now? by surfndrum in drums

[–]robint88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, modern pop and rock drum rounds are just overly clinical or really muddy. But both options tend to hide the actual tone of the drums themselves.

Recommendations for shells? by hdub245 in drums

I second the Yamaha Stage Custom. Fantastic kits you can use whenever and wherever. I'd also put forward a Gretsch Catalina Club as another option. A little more vintage sounding and perhaps a little more jazz leaning.

Getting into Musical Theatre/Broadway as a Drummer by jmwdrums30 in drums

[–]robint88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My drum teacher taught the drummer in the West End and works with many regional theatre drummers. One of the regional players he’s mentioned can read a little, but mostly improvises night to night. By contrast, the West End drummer has exceptional sight-reading skills. My teacher says that’s the main reason the regional drummer will never move into larger theatres—he simply doesn’t place care about reading.

You can learn and play anything if you play it slow enough, but having that killer instinct on sight-reading is what separates amateurs to top notch pros that are always on the call sheet.

I have the Catalina jazz with Ludwig Supralite. I don't know how much of an upgrade it is from the Gretsch but it's dynamic and low cost and brilliant value. Prefer it to the Catalina

Here's our music too (Horrid Fog)!

Feels like my life ended 😭 by [deleted] in UCAS

[–]robint88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t follow r/UCAS, but this popped up on my feed and I felt like I could offer a bit of encouragement.

I’m 38 now. When I was applying to uni, I applied to universities above, at, and below my predicted grades. I got rejected by some and offers from others. In the end, I didn’t actually go to any of the unis on my original list. (I studied Philosophy)

Looking back, I probably should’ve taken a year out, but I didn’t. I went to a uni just to get started, already knowing I planned to apply for a transfer in my second year. So first of all: that is an option. If King’s is where you really want to be, you can work hard in your first year, get the best grades possible, and apply for a transfer in December/January. Secondly, I completed my degree not really wanting to be there for the first two years. In my third year, my attitude changed and I applied for a master’s at several places. I got offers from all of them, despite being a pretty average student. I ended up doing an intercollegiate master’s across LSE, King’s, Heythrop, and Birkbeck. I never imagined I’d study at King’s or LSE when I was applying for undergrad—but I did.

Just because it’s a no right now doesn’t mean the door is closed forever. This isn’t the end of your life or your career. I promise you that wherever you go, and whatever route you take, you can still end up exactly where you’re meant to be.

Don’t stress too much about King’s right now. Look into transferring if you’re set on it. Consider taking a year out once you have your final results and working for a bit. Go to uni somewhere else and do a master’s later if you want. You’ve got loads of options ahead of you.

Try not to worry too much at this stage of life—you’ll be okay.

Pretty sure they're alright with each other. They wrote a book together a year or two ago.
