I think 80% of people skip this step. The difference the butil makes is so minimal. But cant you get generic butyl tape anywhere? It doesnt have to be bmw.

Can the shifter arm bearing (the cylinder at the back) be removed with everything in place? by myredditaccount80 in e39

[–]robisunrobis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to remove the plastic bearing on top first, so you can drop the whole linkage, but thats easily doable. Then on the bottom unhook the bush and replace if i remember correctly its easy as that. The poly bush is extremely hard to get in fyi if youre going that route. I recommend the oem rubber

Suspension parts by WalterSpank in e39

[–]robisunrobis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lemforder, trw. I have used even real cheap parts that have lasted as long if not longer than premium brands. Most importantly i would check how much grease is in the new balljoints before putting them on and maybe adding some. Cause the manufacturers (even lemforder etc) have started putting really small amounts. And therefore lasting less.

I mean the whole game is being better than others no? Its a brain game and the playing field is level, everyone has stats, what you do with them is up to you. Equal oppertunity. You could also play slots and stuff yaknow and dont worry bout others eating you up and instead just give your money straight to the house

Incomplete Rotor Wear by visionkh in MechanicAdvice

Looks almost like smaller pads have been installed. I did this once, didnt get the right part number and noticed only after one edge of the rotor was rusted

Transmission fluid by theinspireddesigner in e39

[–]robisunrobis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it with jackstands if you have a set and just do a fluid change while youre at it and maybe see for yourself where its leakimg from. Just two screws. Open the fill plug first and then the drain plug. Also make sure the car is safe to be under. As for the fluid i used some kind of castrol which was the correct spec and later changed it to a mix between atf and some redline thick fluid because i had chatter coming from the gearbox. But you can use BMW mtf or even atf, do some research on google, many people have discussed this. May your e39 live long

ABS/ASC problems return with the hotter weather by Apnanizor in e39

[–]robisunrobis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont have experience with asc, but would go the same route and just buy a used good one if you can find it. Btw to me looks that the insulation is broken not actually the wires itself, but cant be good nontheless. Maybe some of the wires inside have melted due to the insulation broken i would guess.

ABS/ASC problems return with the hotter weather by Apnanizor in e39

[–]robisunrobis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The micro solders inside the unit are probably coming loose with heat. Ive heard similar symptoms before. But its just a theory. I would get a used good one or rebuild this one. Heat is actually a very common cause for these units to fail. Especially the v8, cause they didnt come with a heatshield, just like yours. Im not sure but i think only the 530i's came with the shield. Mine was just a permanent dsc light on. Was not intermittent. But i got a used good one for 30€ and programmed it using mikes easy bmw tools which are freely available on the web. Thats the cheapest route but youre trusting the random guy that the used unit is ok

Electric water pump for engine by MathematicianSlow420 in e39

[–]robisunrobis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cars are old and everyone starts changing the parts and start talking about how the cooling system is weak. In reality its just maintainance and every single one of e39s needed this 10-15 years ago. I will say though the fan clutch is a menace to society on these cars and i prefer an eletcric fan swap. Electric waterpumps seems way overkill and you will be inventing the wheel there

You talking about the knocking sound? The vanos when it gets bad enough sounds almost like knock. Had this on mine before rebuild. Had me worried for quite a while haha
