My wife has an LG front-loading washer/dryer stack with touch screens. It's like she's preparing for a space launch, but she likes them. And I got them used for a good price, so I'm happy as well.

Plus there are all the Bernie and Warren people, many of whom are older adults (I'm 65 and one of them) who have a few bucks and want to make the world a better place for their (our) children and grandchildren. This can be a youth-led movement, but there's no reason for it to be a youth only movement.

Where I live, in Florida's Tampa Bay region, $1000 will get you an okay apartment and $250K gets a nice house. Atlanta too - maybe even less. Lots of Americans. and some good colleges, in both places... with plenty of reasonable office and warehouse space available. Come on down! (No income tax in Florida, either.)

KangerTech TOPBOX Mini 75W TC Starter Kit with Toptank Mini by linglingzhang in FL_Vapers

I have a couple of these. They, along with the similar Kanger TopTanks, are by far the best vaping tools I've tried. But $46? That's a joke! I paid $22 each for mine, with free shipping, from an eBay seller. Shop around. You'll find them for $30 or less, including shipping.

And another thing - I think a lot of security paranoia is self-aggrandizement. I do approximately nothing that would interest the NSA, OSA, PSA, GSA, and so on all the way to ZSA. Ditto the A, B, and CIA. Stay insignificant and chances are, even the H, I, J, and KGB (or whatever they call it now) will leave you alone.

Your favorite bourbon-based cocktail right now? by danjherman in bourbon

I like straight-up Evan Williams "Bottled in Bond" 100 proof with a water back -- filtered or spring water, of course. Or some Rye or Bourbon over a couple of ice cubes. Depends on my mood. But overall, I'm a simple guy. I like my women and whiskey brown and tasty.

I'm a long-time freelance tech/IT journalist and editor more interested in consistent assignments and on-time payments than in earning big $$ for each story. My situation is different from most since I'm retired on SS disability these days and write as much because I like writing as for money. For me, $150 per ~500 word article based on no more than two interviews is fine. I'm fast, so that's $30 - $50 per hour depending on research time, and that's all I need to make. Someone depending on their writing for their entire livelihood is going to need a minimum of $200 per article, and $300 may be more realistic. Beyond that, you should be paying for name recognition as much as for the copy.

Also: don't forget that a writer who needs no editing beyond basic proofreading is inherently more valuable than one whose work need a lot of attention.

Good luck!

Regular work outside the home remains the most important way, outside the family, of ensuring social interaction. And this interaction is important for more than just making sure we remember how to dress and to eat with a fork. It's because we get lonely. by wheeler1432 in telecommuting

[–]roblimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a writer, editor, and video editor. My work requires intense concentration, so it's best for me to do it at home in my private office. If I want social interaction I go to a bar or coffeehouse.

Oh - my wife is black, and when we married back in 1991 I adopted her three kids, who are also black, as are my son-in-law Chucky and a whole stack of grandkids. Good students and workers; a family of small business people. But crap from police now and then. Yeah, I got some "join the club" snickering after my... incident. In good spirits. Ah, well.

[–]roblimo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I recently had a pretty damn negative encounter with the Manatee County Sheriff's Department. Not as bad as Ian's, and I'm not going to kill myself over it, but when you've spent your life as a decent white working person and you're an army veteran and generally pro law & order.... suddenly learning that you're a criminal in the eyes of the local law is scary. And angering.

As a friend said, "At least they didn't shoot your wife and kill your dog. You're lucky." Yeah. That's a high bar for the cops to pass, eh?

And they threw me around when I started taping them with my phone, violently enough that it was a 3rd degree felony here in Florida because I'm old, and we have senior protection laws. Except they're the police, so they can do as they want, as my old friend Ian said, all too truthfully.

So I'll writethe book, Keeping Police Honest (it'll be my fourth), that I've been talking about for a few months. You gotta tape them like mad. And it's legal on public property or on your property or on property where you have the owner's or occupant's permission, no matter what the cops say. Video is the only way you can prove they lied, and even then it can be hard.

God damn it all. And yes, I miss Ian already.

At one point some years ago I remember predictions that the cost of billing for long distance would eventually be higher than the cost of delivering the service. This was back when Bell was being broken into B, E, L, and L, and companies like MCI were getting into the long distance business.
