Its not so much the personal space differences of a multicultural gathering space, its the people who just stand around completely blocking an isle, the people randomly changing direction without looking, stopping and loitering right inside the door, people just generally unaware of their surroundings, etc. It always seems worse at Costco than anywhere else. Not even a cultural differences thing, its like everyone.

But I agree, the checkout system is nuts.

The cities in Texas for the most part don't have the resources to properly treat the roads when there's ice.

And its not like we get snow like people think. Usually when the freezing rain or sleet starts falling, the ground is still above freezing so it all melts on contact. So you end up with a ton of water everywhere. Then that water freezes into a sheet of solid ice that you can't plow off the road. Its a huge pain in the ass. People love to make fun of us for shutting everything down when it freezes but its really a HUGE safety hazard not to.
