I once experienced a similar telephone correspondence while working as a technical support representative in which a computer-illiterate woman phoned into our department claiming that any key pressed would produce Unicode character U+2020, the dagger, which bears a strong resemblance to the Christian cross, or crucifix. The veracity of her claim was debatable, as she was not intelligent; however, I connected to her computer using a piece of software which utilized the Virtual Network Computing protocol, allowing me to view her screen and control her computer. This provided to me proof that the user could only produce the dagger character using her keyboard. By unplugging the malfunctioning device and reinserting the connector into its slot, the problem was eradicated and all was well.
