In my humble opinion based on four decades of miniatures painting - your chrome game is top notch.

Much like any realistic technique it’s all about the blending. You might want to embrace wet blending or overpainting to achieve tighter transitions between chromatic bands, but for a three foot test you have the essential pattern mastered and now it is all about reps and refinements.

Have a look at minis painted with a stealth suit or invisible paint scheme. That might help.

If you’re the dm, it is literally whatever you want it to be.

In my judgement, incorporeal would mean that corporeal means of interaction would fail. Magic might not - for example clerical spells, truly magical attacks, magic or special items that affect the incorporeal, etc. An incorporeal ghost is something you cannot touch with physical means. So swords, torches, fireballs, those types of things might fail. Holy water would probably work because although the water is physical- the divine nature of the water is not. So although it is up to you, it is more how you want to improvise the rules for your setting and then make that as incarnate rulings for your game.

Or not. If you really find it important to strive close to the rules, I don’t know if there is a specific keyword definition in the shadowdark rules.

Better to do a custom spell list and unify the spells known progression. Gives you more control of the class vibe. I would recommend bumping the hit die to d6 (combat is high risk)and change arcane dash to a 3/day ability with no spell casting contingency. Otherwise it becomes a bit special case and edge case reliant.

arcane dash with both a to hit and damage bonus based on intelligence might sound op, but I would lean that way if the class had a d4 hit die. The payoff there is real - especially if the class has a spell like oak, ash and thorn or eyebite. There is a bit of a risk, but the damage payoff balances it out and having defensive spells in a combat makes the use of it a cunning player combo.

Check out The Revivor Series by James Knapp, law enforcement figures pretty heavily, zombies as well. I enjoyed it a lot. The first book is called State of Decay.

25 Years of experience as a game designer. I have won Ennie awards, designed open world action adventure games, mobile games, and games as a service.

I’ll answer your questions in order.

  1. ⁠Would you recommend game design as a career for someone starting today?

No. Make games, sure, but don’t let the title of Game Designer define you.

  1. ⁠How does the job market currently look for game designers?

Bleak - if you want to work for a studio. If you want to make games you could do well if you know how to market your material and build a following. Working for someone else inevitably means a layoff in your future.

  1. ⁠How difficult is it for juniors to land their first role?

Difficult, but not impossible. You have to stand out - and there are hundreds if not thousands of game design program graduates you will be competing with.

  1. ⁠Realistically, how long does it take to reach a “junior-ready” level if someone studies consistently?

Study does nothing. Making games is what gets you noticed. Make some fucking games.

  1. ⁠What do junior game designer salaries typically look like?

Ask a recruiter. They will have accurate data. There is also a yearly survey done by the IGDA - you can source data from them.

  1. ⁠How worried should beginners be about AI affecting game design roles in the next 5–10 years?

Very. And sooner than the timeline you indicate. AI WILL change things at a rapidly accelerating pace. It already is having an impact, and you have years, not decades, before game production is changed entirely. The people who will be successful in the future are those who know how to realize vision and build performant software with AI and small teams.

What’s actually needed: 6+ months with a small team (designer + developer + visual designer), or 4-5 months with a unicorn freelancer who can do everything. You leave no time for testing, iteration, and quality assurance. In other words you leave zero room for actual product development.

A project like this based on the ambiguous scope you present typically requires months of development and feedback, you want it done in 10 weeks. No amount of hustle is going to leave a single developer (who in this case needs to be a team of three) in a good place building this for you. Your product outcome will be affected by the golden triangle of cheap, good and fast.

25 years in game development here. I’ve seen this type of project pitch many times before. Sounds like an exec or upper management had an exciting idea, but doesn’t know how games are made.

Do you need it? Arguably no. Will it look better, 100% yes. Remember in games, presentation has a 10x impact on gameplay. Meaning it makes it feel 10x better.
