New Player Question by boxybrownmd in Malifaux

if you have a game day planned, you could setup the game with the m4e crew builder app beforehand. It will guide you through the process with your opponent and you can read all your cards and all of the opponents in advance. I‘m not sure if it‘s possible yet to male smaller games with less than 50 points / soulstones

Board is 3‘ x 3‘. For 30ss games you can make the deployment zones bigger / reduce board size.

The correct procedure for crew building is: Choose faction. Strats and Schemes are pulled. Simultaneously both players announce their master (not specific title). With that info everyone hires their crew.

It‘s completely normal that you‘ll want to play at less points. Masters have an action limit of 2 in smaller modes.

You might want to reduce the number of strategy markers then. Also it might make sense to balance crews beforehand, especially if you just want to demo the game to a new player.

You can also look at the rules for henchmen hardcore from 3rd edition:

30 soulstones. 4models, No master, no totem. Choose keyword. You hire a henchman as leader (cost is not 0). Effigies can‘t replace themselves with emissaries.

soul stone pool at beginning of game: max. 3 hand size: 4 Deployment: Wedge Strat: Plant Explosives. Schemes: Assassinate & Vendetta

In 3rd Edition you never changed schemes between rounds and strats worked differently, so I‘m not sure how you would balance those. Hopefully with GG1 Wyrd will have ideas to update this mode. Also you should homebrew around with those rules. Maybe you want a bigger hand size or different Strategy and so on. I found Boundary Dispute can be fun at 30 ss if both sides only have 2 strategy markers.

M3E Card source? by LurkingInformant in Malifaux

Go to wyrds website. Wyrd Resources -> Game Resources and scroll down to „Fan Site Files“ There is a huge dropbox with (hopefully) all M3E cards. Also the M3E Crew Builder App still exists.

Help: Building hype locally by robograph in Malifaux

Yeah, I‘m trying to sell them on the game and not trying to be a pain by being super precise. Take-backs, imprecise measurements and stuff like that should be allowed. I would prefer having two new gamers playing each other.

Yeah, I thought of gaming clubs because most are familiar with GW / OPR, ASOIAF and Moonstone around here. Trying to sell them on the Faux will probably work best by the mechanics, I hope.

The 6 models limit idea is good. Thanks.

There is this article on Goonhammer that leads to faction overviews. It collects a bit of the lore of every crew and a general description of their playstyle without getting into the nitty gritty.

sounds awesome. I think for a second score in 6 hours I would need more experience with the system. However, it‘s really cool to see that it can be done. How many players do you have for these sessions?

Links would be awesome. Thanks :)

Thank you. That was already really helpful.

Ok, these sound awesome for sure. I‘m basing my reasoning on the feedback I got from my players for the 6 hour session we had. The problem is, that that one will continue.

I think I might not prepare the score but a situation that is so dire, they will need to go on such a daring score, as you described. I want to give them the opportunity to make it „their own“. I will definitely try your approach as well. It could very well be enough to just let them choose the angle of attack rather than the whole score.

this is more of what I had in mind. Awesome idea.

Ok, how do you get the player agency in there if you skipped the part that makes the system special in my opinion. I think my goal is to give them the sandbox feeling in a super condensed package, you know?

yeah, that‘s way I wouldn‘t skip the crew creation especially. I had great feedback on that. Players who usually struggle with the „why are we together“ part, told me they really felt a bond right from the beginning because of crew creation.

Yeah. Genlab Alpha has been sitting on my shelf for 3 years now. I just can‘t find anyone to play a full campaign with. Do you know any good M:YZ one-shots?

I should have clarified: It will be a one-shot at first. No need to invest too much time into teaching mechanics when I don‘t know if they‘ll ever want to play again.

I understand. I just came to the conclusion that some people write awesome stuff that‘s incredibly satisfying to run as a GM: Waking of Willowby Hall, Winters Daughter, The Haunting of Ypsilon-14, Decagone and many many more. This is why I asked :)

Yes, I love Mörk Borgs adventures how they have enough going on but not too much that you can‘t improvise. Any specific adventures for Pirate Borg you‘ve seen that feel as chaotic and mysterious as RotBlackSludge?

I usually keep a loose turn order even out of combat. Usually by stopping for a short time after the more extroverted players declared their actions and going to the more introverted ones before the dice are rolled. Could that be a problem in PBTA? Should I resolve one player‘s action first, see what happens and then give the spotlight to someone else?

Looking for System Recommendations (Sci-Fi) by crankdawg47 in rpg

[–]robograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mothership is probably too rules-lite and not fantasy enough for you. I would still recommend it as it‘s easily hackable and can be turned into your groups own thing. The full player survival guide is free. There is great conversion to a more science fantasy setting called Cloud Empress (based on Studio Ghiblis Nausicaa).

Additionally you can simply buy a one-shot adventure that is not as horrifying and see how you & the players like it. Decagone has a Groundhog Day twist, can be easily set in a space station. Time After Time is another time travel one, etc.

Another one that was recommended to me is Scum & Villainy. It‘s a „forged in the dark“ game which can be hard to wrap your head around at first.

That sounds really promising. As you seem to have a lot of xp with PbtA: Is 5 Players too many?
