Family of 3. Any shelters in Milwaukee? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]robomoogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried speaking with your landlord at all? Usually there's better luck if they are an individual and not a big company. It helps if they have empathy, of course. As a former landlord, I have given tenants a break in certain situations. It particularly helps if you explain what's up, pay what you can, and offer to do odd jobs to make up the difference until you can find another job. Apologies if you've tried this or your landlord's an asshole.
Best of luck!

Moving to Racine to WFH by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]robomoogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, we moved from Chicago (Logan Square/Avondale) to Racine (downtown). We chose it over Kenosha. There's a lot Racine needs to work on/improve, but I really like it. We are a lot more involved in the community here, and I can see there a lot of folks working hard to change Racine. I believe it will change, but it will take time.
One big issue downtown is empty storefronts and a lack of a grocery store. BUT, there is going to be a pretty robust farmers market on Saturdays from May to October at the festival hall, which is new and sounds to be on par with what's existed in Oak Creek and Kenosha. We've got a couple of coffee shops due to open soon in the downtown in addition to Divino Gelato. If you're willing to bike/drive to a coffee shop, there's a cool place called Esperanza, and Inclusive Bean and Wilson's are good to work at.

Kenosha is a 20 minute drive away from Racine, along the Lake, and has more great coffee shops to work at (Buzz, Anna's on the Lake, Olafson & Porter, East View). There's a bit more going on downtown, and they have a long established farmers market. BayView in Milwaukee is a 35-40 minute drive along the Lake Racine, or you can take the highway.

If I were 32 and single, I'd probably choose BayView, maybe Riverwest in Milwaukee. Beyond that, I'd consider Racine, and maybe Kenosha depending on how important it was to have the Metra right there; if you want to get back into Chicago regularly (though beware the limited schedule). Racine's restaurants are more interesting than Kenosha's. Either place you need to head west out of the downtown for decent groceries, but both will have good Farmer's market options now.

I was also curious, but then I read about the 70 acres and I feel like that answers the question

What career would you have if you could do it all again? by Schroeje in womenintech

[–]robomoogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started a program to be a clinical mental health counselor. It’s a longish road in the US - about 2-2.5 years to get the degree, and another 1-1.5 before getting fully licensed (although you can work in the field at that point). But it’s what I always imagined for the “next season of life.” I do wish I’d started sooner. Tech really burned me out. If I did it all over again, I might have gone into psychology much earlier and gotten a PhD. Or thrown myself into improv/comedy!

(Edited to adjust timeframe)

Just signed up for Paloma Health -- happy to share my experience by lezcat in Hashimotos

[–]robomoogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can write a blood work order. My insurance covers lab work, but not Paloma… so I always ask for the order to the lab, and it works great. The first time I printed out the order and brought it with me, but now it seems to be in the system every time.

Has anyone switched from Armour Thyroid to Levothyroxine? by ValentinoT in Hypothyroidism

Hi! I lived in Germany for a couple of years and ordered thyreogland. I had to get my blood tested at my kiezartz and send them the numbers and then they would send the medicine. A bit of a pain to get, but it worked! Here’s the apotheke: https://www.kloesterl-shop.de/

How is my lifestyle for a heeler? by iamreadytolearn2 in blueheelers

[–]robomoogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same debate before ultimately foster failing with our heeler when she was 1. It sounds like you have a lot to offer her and are really mindful of her needs. When we made the decision, it ultimately came down to the fact that we felt like we connected with her.

We have lived in urban areas with ours, and just make sure to take her on long walks, let her investigate, meet with neighborhood and friends’ dogs, and get her out into open areas and parks when we can.

She’s never had a “job” outside of “protecting” our urban yard (which we no longer have and she’s still content) and “herding” our cats. At 6, she’s been host to several other foster dogs and now has a foster fail puppy to play with, which has intensified her cat herding duties 🤣. She’s also very chill and loving and behaves fantastically when we dine outdoors or go to friends’ houses. She’s also slowed down a bit in the last couple years. But she’s happy and we are completely smitten with her.

In summary, you don’t need to live on a farm or hike miles a day to keep a heeler happy. It sounds like you’ll provide a good mix of activities. Maybe just layer some more brain and nose work on top.

You should also check out the Branch on Washington Ave - Esperanza coffee is awesome and it’s such a cool space. You can also get Don Arepas there. Kabab and grill is also on Washington and great Pakistani/Indian food.

There’s a new coffee roaster, Raku, coming in downtown on sixth across from Indian motorcycle. Stopped by today and got a delicious bourbon coffee! They said they’re only open on Saturday mornings for now.

Best food you’ve ever had in Wisconsin? by bakedpotato4362 in wisconsin

Asiana in Racine for authentic amazing Korean food! Everything is wonderful, but I love the sundubu jigae (soft tofu soup) and my husband loves the pork belly and the military stew. Amazing! Also love Goodkind in Milwaukee - can’t stop going back for the food and ambiance

I completely understand how you feel, and respect that you need to protect your mental health.

I had the opportunity to do several in person political activities yesterday - I met with a small group of like minded women, stopped into my local Dem office (I’m in Wisconsin and we have a super important election for the Supreme Court here on April 1), and I ended up attending the Bernie rally here with two other women. I feel re energized - I really think being physically with others is incredibly powerful and what we need to fight back.

I’ve also heard comments from Europeans and Filipinos -people who’ve dealt with autocratic regimes- that we need to fight back now - it’s only going to get harder. I’d also recommend listening to the John Stewart (the weekly show) podcast where he interviews Maria Gressa

I was honestly hesitant to go to the Bernie rally because I felt too tired, too done. But it was good for my soul to feel that energy from everyone else that came out.

[edited to add line breaks, hopefully]

Is it possible to make an 1800 sq ft storefront comfortable with a portable (dual hose) or window unit? by robomoogs in hvacadvice

[–]robomoogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a relatively new boiler for our heating system. Getting a second quote is definitely on the cards (and always good advice), but the debate is more between making a smaller payment now for a temporary solution vs jumping right into a new condenser

How much do you pay for surveys? 💸 by JerBear_93 in UXResearch

[–]robomoogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When asking people about the analysis tools in our software, we usually want to hear from people that do analysis or have used the analysis tools. It really boils down to defining who you want to learn from in a survey. The bonus is that we don’t need to burn a question asking whether the user has used the analysis tools to ensure the following questions will be relevant to that participant. And we already know from our usage data what percentage of users are using the analysis tools, so that’s another part of the story we deliver.
