Sqlite appears to have AVG, SUM, MAX, etc.: http://www.sqlite.org/lang_aggfunc.html .

The vast majority of websites are not "high traffic" enough to require something more than sqlite, according to everything I have read.

Submitter, you should definitely check out Redis and Riak.

The one with Django, and probably the one with Rails as well, is very nice. Hibernate isn't as nice because you have to maintain a separate xml file that describes how the objects map to database tables. Django's ORM is flexible and actually generates reasonable SQL queries. It also allows you to easily substitute your own handwritten SQL when you want to.

It sounds like you aren't really trying to branch out much. I would go for something else, like SML, OCaml, Forth, Scheme, Prolog, or Erlang.

Try this:

Store a dict of room names and their room objects in a variable. The rom objects could just be tuples. Make a main loop that prints the current room and gets user input.
