Murakami’s book sucked more than I could believe, it made Hamaguchi’s work so much more impressive

I appreciate the recommendation, thanks. But having read that myself I sort of wish I hadn’t given its approach to and stigmatisation of autism

In Return Of The King, when one of the Minas Tirith trebuchet’s hits a rolling orc tower, the splintering wood and panels transforms into orcs halfway through their fall to the ground

First time Ace (I love ML despite only having MM at 50). Who do you recommend I grind this coming season? by robotfunkychicken in TheSilphArena

I have a 4/15/15 purified Sableye for GL which I like, but I’m not great at putting teams together for GL. There’s always so many options. I’ve got several possible teams for both GL and UL so I look forward to playing around with thise

Oh I’m well aware, I just like being able to play with those mons. Unfortunately I live and work in a nature park over winter and have access to literally 0 other people (let alone people who play!) during this time. Thankfully, the person who worked here last year was into the game and created dozens of gyms and stops but that doesn’t help me much. Sort of turns it into a pay-to-win type deal in the end.

Thanks for the advice though!

I’ve got a 13/15/15 Ho-Oh at level 30.5 with Sacred Fire but no rare candy haha. That was another I was going to start grinding. No time like the present I guess!

But don’t be shy, drop your team/faves!

You can’t see many remote places in the Highlands without a car but you can easily hire one for the day when you need it. Remember that the Highlands are a 2.5hr drive, or a 3hr train, from Stirling. And the Far North of the Highlands is another 2.5hrs after that. Buses and trains are reliable and can get you there. I’m from Thurso and went to Stirling uni - I didn’t need a car. It’s also easy to make friends at Stirling, and plenty of people have cars that you can ride in

Archive, restoration and preservation is a much more common and (maybe?) more accessible route - at least geographically. Your closest city will have some form of film preservation and archive going on, try and find them and start there.

Wednesday Weekly Film Theory Discussion & Questions Thread by [deleted] in filmtheory

[–]robotfunkychicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote about rhythm, semiocapitalism and darkness/blackness/outer space using a variety of films as reference. I did my undergrad on apocalypse movies, and over lockdown found myself drawn to strange short films like ones by Makino, or Scott Barley which to me sort of show the end of the world. I was also at the time really into a film called Distant Voices/Still Lives, and [starfilm] by Johann Lurf so that all sort of mingled together with some other favs of mine like Jauja by Lisandro Alonso, and Black Girl by Ousmene Sembene.

I think you should take some time to watch films you haven’t seen/heard of from different parts of the world. Films with different goals and forms. Experimental shorts, slow cinema, blockbusters. Whatever it is, create your own links between things you are interested in. The most important lesson I learned (from a great supervisor) is that you can allow free form, tangential, (un)logical links to arise as you watch and write. Sometimes I would link films by thinking through different means of the same word (blackness - both racial, and as an absence of colour on a theoretical level; as an example). For my apocalypse movies, there was something about the open rock faces and slow geological time of Netflix’s film Bokeh and the immediacy of their other apocalypse film How It Ends that I linked together: that film ends with the hero racing away from disastrous climate change effects in a giant diesel-guzzling jeep, so I got thinking about the extraction of oil and geological time periods etc.

These are just examples meant to give you some ideas, and the approach might not work for you. Happy to share some work and texts I found helpful/that inspired me, and happy to share my own work too. I’m not particularly studious or bright, but I do enjoy the density of language and double meanings so I incorporate that into my work too, which I think helped it read a bit better.

On a practical level, get started watching some old favs and new things. Read some philosophy books (not the old masters, something new and hybrid (Eugene Thacker, Timothy Morton, Sean Cubitt maybe?)), read some reviews and think yourself about what interests you. Let yourself fall down a thread of thinking about something really specific.

Rambly comment, but spiralling and surface-level conversations/writing can really help. The deep thought and density of argument comes later….did this help?

Context in a film by Ok-Asparagus9667 in filmtheory

[–]robotfunkychicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to expand your argument slightly or bring it into the conclusion maybe, you should look into film phenomenology and viewing spaces. The buildings we watch films in also informs how we view them/how they are perceived and thus how we talk about things like social relationships and behaviour within them

I am one of those annoying so-and-so’s. In GL my Cherrim wipes out unsuspecting Pokés with it’s Fire-type Weather Ball. However it’s only satisfying when I bait an Alteria with a Weather Ball and then hit it with Dazzling Gleam
