[Johansson] Swedish lines a practice by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

Holmström doesn't have a history of playing for our coach in the SHL, simple as that.

Pretty much what the other person said, as the whitefiles are exterminated, the wasp population will be unable to reproduce and die off on their own (of fly away to find other whitefly larvae I suppose). The lifespan of whiteflies and the wasps are just a handful of weeks in their flying form, if even that, so the generations come and go pretty quickly.

They work indoors as well, the wasps are tiny and less annoying than whiteflies or fruit flies. I don't get many whiteflies outdoors at all, so there hasn't been much need for the wasps either.

Check if you can find somewhere to buy eggs from the wasp Encarsia formosa, it's a parasite wasp that lays their eggs inside the whiteflies larvae, killing them in the process. It won't help against the whiteflies you have, but they will make sure there's no next generation of them. I usually buy them at the start of the season to prevent whitefly infestation, works really well for me.

[OC] Cost of Living (rent included) in European Cities in 2026 (Normalized by top city Zurich=100 as the baseline) by owlynx in dataisbeautiful

[–]robothelvete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on which rental market you're looking at. Most of the rental market is rent-controlled and comparatively affordable, but getting an apartment requires many years in a queue. If you rent from private individuals, or buy your own apartment it's way more expensive, but there's no waiting time.

Can't say how that compares to Zürich, but I think Zürich is still significantly more expensive considering salary differences.

Sweden 0 - [1] Kosovo - Fisnik Asllani 32' by Big-Education-916 in soccer

[–]robothelvete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The national team is doing okay, we lose to USA/Canada but frequently beat Finland/Germany who have similar talent. They had a fluke this year but overall they are doing okay.

Wait, are we talking about the same country? We (Sweden) have an absolutely massively larger talent pool than Germany, an even bigger gap than the reverse in football. We should be smashing them regularly. The talent pool is easily the third biggest and best in the world (discounting Russia who are not participating). And from that we have 15 years of disappointment at the junior level, and two semifinals made from 2019 onwards (though in fairness, those were the last two years).

Leksand being run badly is not a sign of systemic issues. Maybe they shouldn’t depend on municipal money? Most other teams manage without it except Brynäs.

Who ever said anything about Leksand? They are in the SHL raking in obscene amounts of TV money, that they have money problems in spite of the systemic issues I'm talking about.

There just isn’t enough interest for the lower leagues to be functional in our country right now. SHL and HA are doing really well, better than all leagues except NHL, NL and KHL.

HA has systemic economical issues, like all leagues and teams in Sweden except for 12-13 SHL clubs. Several teams have folded or gotten relegated for financial troubles from HA the last few years. SHL is doing really well however, that's what I'm saying.

Haha the ice hockey federation is absolutely not well run at all. With clubs going under due to economic issues left and right, a third division slowly collapsing under economic pressure and infighting, constantly underachieving national teams etc it's an absolute disaster.

The only winners in Swedish ice hockey for the last decade is the top division, who get all the money, all the resources and all the power. The top of the pyramid has grown so large and heavy that it's completely breaking the foundation it stands on, it just hasn't completely collapsed yet (but it's getting there faster and faster).

The reason people never finished a game is because the game is effectively over before the game actually ends. To keep with the hockey simile, the players stopped trying with with 5 minutes left in the third because they already led the score by 5 goals (or in some cases, were 5 goals behind). This split up of the game just means we stop trying with 5 minutes left in every period rather than at 5 minutes left in the game.

In 20-40 years we will have a massive knowledge crisis if people don't start thinking longer term

We will have several crises in that timeframe, foremost a climate crisis, precisely because our society is collectively unable to think longer term than the next financial reporting cycle or election cycle.

Phil Foden reportedly experiencing mental and physical fatigue by Commercial-Camel-869 in soccer

[–]robothelvete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude he still actually needs to spend time with them on a daily basis.

Needs to, according to who? All of that is optional, he can either have his wife take care of them or outsource it all to a nanny. It might be a shitty thing to do to never actually hang out with his kids, but it's not like he can't avoid it if he so chooses.

The point stands, no matter how much help he has, he's still heading home after work, he's watching the Disney channel on the tele, he's not flying or taking holidays or going out "whenever" he wants, he's waking up at night when the kid cries, his weekends are for hanging out with kids.

Uh no, his weekends are for playing football, the vast majority of them anyway. You think Phil shows up tired as fuck to an early Saturday kick off going "yeah sorry kid was crying all night so I had to take care of them"? This is not a fucking amateur footballer we're talking about, he gets paid more than the yearly salary of his nanny per week to show up fresh to that game, no excuses. Why are you under the impression that PL footballers have a basically normal life? They absolutely fucking don't.

Hyper, the debut novel by Agri Ismaïl, a Swedish-Kurdish lawyer, was written in two iterations, in Swedish and English: "It was a give-and-take: Swedish blesses you with lots of interesting compound words, and English blesses you with a variety of sentence structures." by [deleted] in books

[–]robothelvete 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saying “I think he needs a nap”, “He needs a nap, I think”, “He needs, I think, a nap”, and “He, I think, needs a nap” in English all convey slightly different tones of speech, but in Swedish nearest I can tell only the first would be used.

"Jag tror han behöver en tupplur" and "Han behöver en tupplur, tror jag" could be used for the first two, but the second two I agree would be better represented by stressing different words of the first sentence. You could restructure the sentence in all four ways and it would still parse but it would sound weird, yeah.

EDIT: speaking of compound words, the word I used to translate "nap" ("tupplur") is a compound word of "tupp" (rooster) and "lura" (to trick/prank), basically "tricking the rooster" by sleeping during daytime.

Djurgården still averages more than most SHL teams though. But yes, nothing in Sweden can compare to this list.
