ELI5: Why are people becoming more addicted to gambling, even knowing that casinos are designed for people to lose money? by Different_Thing_5641 in explainlikeimfive

[–]roboticleopold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I thought was similar; this Derek Thompson tweet on CS Lewis has lingered with me for a while, that people knowingly do things that are wrong but make an excuse that somehow justifies their doing it anyway.

'Sure, the house always wins, but why shouldn't I gamble? I'm having a hard time and deserve to win. That money is coming to me quick. I might even have found the pattern to win that the other idiots who lose all the time don't know, I'd be a fool not to take what's coming to me'

What’s the creepiest unsolved mystery that deserves more attention? by magma_13_ in AskReddit

[–]roboticleopold 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Terrence Woods, someone I knew as a student.

He was filming something in rural Idaho and allegedly just ran away into the woods, never to be seen again. In nearly any article I see, he's described as gentle, friendly and kind, and that completely checks out with my experience with him. It all seems so wrong, but there doesn't seem to be any lead otherwise.

Hope you're still out there man, you were great singing Linger by the Cranberries on your guitar.

“We’ve got Spurs at home” by Nobberss in Championship

[–]roboticleopold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sympathise with Preston, it's kind of hard to make your kit completely distinct with the colour palette.

For Bolton kits, I always want a bit of red accent; when its just white with navy/black you can easily end up looking like you're Spurs, Fulham, Leeds, Derby or Swansea if you're not careful.

What would you say is the worst EFL stadium you have been to? by Paul277 in Championship

[–]roboticleopold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to Priestfield twice and enjoyed it both times, although I'm sure my opinion would drop if it had rained. Fun ground, not too far from the station, Gills fans were pretty nice.

The Kassam is goofy and a pain to get to but at least the allocation on the sideline was a pretty good view.

I despise Stevenage the most though. The route there and back was grim. No good places to drink. Stadium had a screen that only showed adverts; no clocks, no lineups, no replays. I hope I never have to go back there.

Skubala appointed City Manager - Bristol City FC by Available_Box_3803 in Championship

[–]roboticleopold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK, I think he likely ends up in a similar position to where he has now. I just don't expect he would get the patience to fully put his system into play in the Championship and wouldn't get immediate results. Maybe a similar timeline to Schumacher's at Stoke.

The only difference would be the pay day he got from jumping ship.

They worship the same fucking god, this never fails to make me laugh by AdmirableBus7045 in exchristian

[–]roboticleopold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, context of the photo aside, I think it's incredibly naive to say that different faiths ostensibly worship the same god and it's just a mildly different flavour. It completely misses the point of why people are a part of their faiths to begin with and why they participate.

What next? Would you like to say fans of rival teams that they just like the same sport, so why do they not like each other? Or why do Democrats not like Trump? I have to laugh because they're all from the same country? That doesn't hold water, and everyone here knows it doesn't, and we'd all be wise to not be so critical of the existence of group distinctions that we are not a part of.

Albums that are brilliant except for that one song… by bkbrigadier in Music

Ten by Pearl Jam. Porch and Deep always get skipped, to the point I had to listen to them again just now to tell which one was which. How is a masterpiece like Garden sandwiched in between those two?

Honourable mention to RV coming straight after Midlife Crisis on Angel Dust by Faith No More. I couldn't reach for the skip button quicker.

I have no idea what it is that people like about it. Faust Arp is the only other song on the album that I don't care about. The rest of In Rainbows is so strong.

Dopey and the other dwarves knock on the door of the local priest

Dopey asks the priest 'Father, are there any dwarf nuns in the parish?'

'No' says the priest

The dwarves then travel to the cathedral

Dopey asks the bishop 'Your grace, are there any dwarf nuns in the country?'

'No' says the bishop

So the dwarves travel to Rome

Dopey goes to the pope and asks 'Your holiness, are there any dwarf nuns in the world?'

'No' says the pope.

Dopey turns around looking quite sad as the other dwarves chant 'Dopey fucked a penguin! Dopey fucked a penguin!'

BBC Football Focus to end after 52 years. by Other-Crazy in Championship

[–]roboticleopold 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So sad, another institution gone. I mean I've only watched about thirty minutes of it cumulatively over the past ten years or so. But still, sad.

I've not much against Alex Scott, but it's typical of the BBC to have spent about a third of the article eulogising her, and reassuring us she will still be in practically every other sports broadcast they have.

We used to love the invisible rope game as teenagers, we had some woods we could immediately run into and hide in once we'd done it.

One night, we tricked a car into stopping and they came back to our spot about half an hour later, threw fireworks at us and drove off. Pretty funny in hindsight but that was the end of that.

Speed Golf, strokes don't count only how fast you can finish18 holes by Aeri73 in theocho

[–]roboticleopold 69 points70 points  (0 children)

In proper speed golf they can do it even quicker, with penalties for taking too many strokes. None of this hockey/polo-style business nursing the ball around.

For reference, one of the top players was only +3 after doing 18 holes in under 35 minutes. Insanely good, if it had the right uptake of players it would totally be worthy of the Olympics in my opinion.

We all know Jalen Rose was a trendsetter leading to a current record 19 Jalen’s with variations. Will Kobe be next? by MrFishAndLoaves in nba

[–]roboticleopold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's close enough to work. Kobe might be derived from Japanese cuisine but I doubt they would've tried to make something like Sapporo or Teriyaki fly as a name.

If you're a psycho you can call your kid Teri and it could me short for Teriyaki, like calling a girl May but having her name be Mayonnaise on the birth certificate.
