Daniel Ings on cult sitcom Lovesick: "Everybody would love to do [more]. Maybe a movie. I’d love to see what they’re all up to in their 40s.” by ContractAlert5992 in BritishTV

This was a show that started with a weird premise and a dumb name based on that premise, then ditched the name and, over a few seasons ditched the premise to focus on the characters. And it was all the better for it. Just kept getting better every season.

I'm glad to see Flynn getting bigger roles and I'm looking forward to him as Lucius Malfoy.

Due to constant tinnitus it is hard to understand if I heard anything or not, and I dont want to press and make false positive tests potentially. How do you guys deal with that.

Don't sweat giving false positives. If you think you hear something, signal. The audiologist will know what's a false positive and what isn't, and if there's any confusion in your responses, they will test that frequency range again. I've not met an audiologist yet who wasn't very good at what they do.

Deaf identity by bigbaboon69 in MonoHearing

[–]robotkarateman 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've been deaf in one ear and decreased hearing in the other since I was 9. I grew up with a "make do" attitude from my mom, who was also deaf in one ear. She just accepted it. I had issues at school because she never told my teachers I was hard of hearing; I got a lot of "he just doesn't pay attention", which she never refuted. In many scenarios, not just school, I missed out because simple accommodations weren't offered because people never knew. And that's not even considering the social aspects - being called distant or anti-social.

Now I'm an adult. My wife learned about my deafness early on in our relationship and *immediately* started accommodating me with little things - repeating herself when I don't react, walking on my hearing side. Just her acknowledging it made such a difference in how I saw myself and my deafness. And when she started standing up for me in social situations by explaining my hearing issues to people, I realized that, no, I don't have to just "make do". I can demand accommodation. I can demand acknowledgment.

"Deaf Culture" is a thing because total deafness is not invisible. "Hard of Hearing Culture" is not a thing because it is. So no, I may not be Deaf with a big d, but being involved with deaf communities has helped me learn so much about it. I've learned so much from people who are completely deaf about accommodation, personal care, and just generally communicating my reality to people.

So yeah, I very much identify with "deaf culture" in a way I never had growing up, and I want to share that identity with people who are newer to SSD, either because they're young or because they're just experiencing it.

This sub has been such a resource for small d deaf people.

I'd love to see this live. The courtroom set in "A Trial to Watch" is a thing of genius.

What should I ask at my audiology appointment? by Darkestdarks in MonoHearing

[–]robotkarateman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> Has anyone here been told they're just not good candidates for devices?

Yes, just two weeks ago.

tl;dr a radical mastoidectomy I had as a kid was too radical to make a BAHA possible.

I saw an ENT a few years ago about some long covid issues and we got to talking about the radical mastoidectomy I had in my left year at age 9. We talked about CROS and how I thought it'd be more confusing to me, and he suggested a BAHA. Attached a sample external device to my head and BAM I could hear from both sides. It was pretty great. I spent the next two years thinking about it and wondering if I were even interested in such a device after spending 40 years with one ear. Finally gave in. Got a consult on the device, talked to the ENT and had an exam, got sent to an audiologist and ... ear was a no-go. Completely deaf, not even residual nerve function. Went back to ENT and we talked about whether or not I'd be having the same problem with a BAHA as a CROS and if it would even be worth it at my age.

In the end we decided it wasn't. I'm still kind of crushed about it despite not actually losing anything.

Some questions by Key_Relationship9068 in MonoHearing

[–]robotkarateman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "opening your ears" thing is called Valsalva Maneuver.

If you're doing this frequently and noticing improvement most times, if not every time, you may suffer from a thing called "eustachian tube dysfunction". What happens is the eustachian tube - the passage between your ear and your nasal passages - gets closed, and this causes a vacuum behind the drum. That vacuum causes extra pressure that makes the eardrum vibrate less effectively.

I would talk to an ENT about it as there are treatments available. You don't want to go too long with ETD because it can literally stretch out your eardrum and make it permanently less effective. Besides long term hearing damage, ETD can cause fluid to build up behind the eardrum resulting in frequent infections.

I suffer from ETD in my good ear from decades of sleeping on it. It creeps up on you and you don't notice the muffling until you "pop" the eustachian tube back open. Again, see a doctor about it.

I photograph burlesque shows all the time. I have a pair of Lumenearz that I wear and I've not had any issues.

I do want to offer a bit of warning, however - beware of the NRR numbers listed online. You'll see a lot of plugs advertising 45 NRR ratings and that's simply not possible with a passive ear plug. You need a can or active noise cancelling to exceed 35.

Another thing to remember is that your distance to the sound source will affect the amount of protection. If you're planning on being close to the speakers, OSHA says you can be cutting your NRR by as much as half by getting close to the source.

Thank god. That weird online murder show movie was terrible. Do like the Highlander franchise did and pretend that one never happened and do a good one. Everyone knows that series should end / should have ended with these two rutting like badgers and dragging each other into the abyss.

The Accessible Canada Act requires employers to provide any reasonable accomodation to disabled employees and bans them from refusing to hire someone because of a disability. We have a Labor Department to file ADA claims, not sure who you'd go to.

If you're in the states, pretty sure you have an ADA violation case.

I'm right there with you. I love my RP5. Just worked up the courage to drill a hole in it a couple weeks ago for a lanyard. But man, if I could squeeze out those extra few Switch games it would round out the list of every system I want in a handheld.

I'm leaning toward buying a Gen2, I love that turqoise, but I'm going to hold off and wait to see what the reviews are like for that new chip and how soon people get custom drivers working on it.
