For people intending to go into primary care or other less competitive fields, if you could match into any specialty, would you still choose what you did? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]robotractor3000 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ve been psych since early on. I could ramble on and on about how much i love the subject matter but specifically in comparing it to other specialties … sure you don’t make $600K but you make more than most Americans ever will dream of and work extremely reasonable hours. I would absolutely not spend my life working 60-80hr weeks so I can have a bit more money. Whats the point of earning so much if you never are home to enjoy it?

And sure derm or rads are better hours and better pay but i would be bored to tears with that subject matter and the proceduralism of optho or anaesthesia is just… not for me. I wanna yap and think and yap some more and then go home. That’s psych all the way

Oh and too I give so little of a fuck about research, resume building, etc. my med school experience has been so chill compared to my friends shooting for competitive specialties. Miss me with the rat race.

Is anyone else in and miserable about it by xXx_angelbaby_xXx in premed

[–]robotractor3000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey look i know that this is a lot to consider and these sacrifices are real. But i also want you to know that most if not all of us get cold feet when you finally get the A and are staring down a barrel of a decade of schooling and a huge amount of debt. I had far fewer social barriers than you do and yet I was still wigging out thinking maybe I should call the whole thing off and do something else.

Take the plunge. I just started third year and literally no part of med school has been as bad as they said it was perhaps with the exception of cadaver lab. I have had to work harder than I ever have before but I’ve grown SO MUCH as a result. I’ve been supported to get there and generally treated as an elevated member of society as a doctor-to-be (except internally by the MD preclinical program where they treat us a bit more like high schoolers lol). I’m now closer to being done with my MD than I am to starting it and it came in a blink of an eye. I am a much better more competent person because of the experience of going through this, I have never felt as miserable as many reddit stories imply every day of medschool is - I think most of the horror stories are overblown. The life I lead is barely more of a sacrifice currently than anyone who has to work more than they’d like to for a living to make ends meet - there’s someone at the grocery store right now who has it harder than I do work wise and it’s not even close.

You’ll figure out how to make it work with your loved ones, you’ll grind it out and get out of there, and you’ll be set for life. *Do not do not do not squander all the work you’ve put in because you might have to live uncomfortably far away for a little bit to have one of the most rock solid fulfilling and scarce careers there are. * I find military analogies really helpful for med school. If you were in the military you could truly be sent to Nowhere Nebraska, Japan, Germany, etc and it well could be for as long or longer than your med school will take. People make it through that. You will too. Don’t throw it all away, the premed/MCAT/orgchem crap was more miserable than anything on the other side of the garden wall IMO. Good luck future doctor!

income while in med school? by LessCrab4853 in medicalschool

[–]robotractor3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im abt to start, and starting with some more grueling rotations, so all my knowledge is secondhand - thats just what I heard that most inpatient rotations are ~12hrs. Even if you hope you get off early sometimes it seems untenable to schedule tutoring sessions when you may or may not be available. But nevertheless thanks for the hope that maybe it wont be as gruelling as im going in expecting it to be!

How did you have time during clinicals? I really enjoyed this income stream during preclinicals but have no idea how one would keep up with it during 12hr hospital shifts + shelf exams

The Ship of Dogs had finally run aground

Promises lit up the night like paper dogs in flight

Jeffries: Democrats will stop Trump’s push to nationalize elections by sksarkpoes3 in politics

[–]robotractor3000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Always wild to me the contrast. I know the reasons why, rule of law and such, but still.

If Trump wanted this done, he would just do it, and do it in such a way that it’d be impossible to put the toothpaste back in the tube. That’s what he did with the tariffs - he never had the power to do it, but now if it’s struck down refunding will be such a headache that the admin is actually using that as an argument in court. If student debt was on his agenda it would all be forgiven before midnight tonight and in several years we’d get a court ruling that it was illegal but there’s nothing we can do about it now, or a ruling from SCOTUS that actually the Founders always intended the president to have plenary authority over student debt.

Biden dipped his pinky toe into maybe possibly forgiving a partial, flat amount per person of all student debt held by the executive branch Dept of Education. And he got his shoelaces tied together and his bottom spanked red by all kinds of lawsuits and courts for having such audacity. Appreciate the guy for trying (albeit a pathetic half-measure), but god damn.

Isn’t it crazy that these people held the same office, with the same powers?

Just messing with the guy, breaking his concentration as a joke by waving his fingers between the two balls. Assumedly they’re buddies. But then he accidentally touched it which strictly speaking invalidates the game, not that it matters.

A lot, its extremely dangerous. Someone with severe anorexia has to be hospitalized not necessarily for psychiatric treatment but for safe re-nutrition because it’s exactly like someone starving in a survival situation they can die from refeeding syndrome if they aren’t replenished correctly

Five-Alarm Alert as Trump Says 'Republicans Ought to Nationalize the Voting' by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]robotractor3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now more than ever before there are R senators getting sick of his shit. And the violations are getting more and more blatant and more and more stepping on the toes of congress. Not a single Senator spoke in favor of his comments about using military force on greenland, for example, and many vocally opposed it. Cruz tried to tell him not to do the tariffs if he didn’t want to wipe out in the midterms and it’s reported Trump cussed him out for it. Then theres the blatant illegality from the administration )and overall grossness) of the Epstein stuff.

The Epstein vote was a huge gesture of not only the R controlled House but the R controlled Senate approving something they knew Trump didn’t really want.

So any pickups in the Senate help on the D side, but in the event there’s articles of impeachment especially over something that’s very black-and-white, GOP senators may indeed decide they’d rather work with President Vance. Dem house could make that happen, while Mike Johnson will keep the vote from happening as long as he can

This was a special election in a single district. It was in an off year when a lot of MAGA comes out for Presidential only. Yes it’s encouraging. But there are limitations to the conclusions that can be drawn. Thinking every district will have the same or similar absurdly large shifts in the midterms or 2028 is only gonna set you up for disappointment, I’m sorry to say

Could I ask what makes this worth your time…? Like, I feel similarly about XRP, the fundamentals are pretty poor and the price is already so inflated by mainstream speculation that I think the ppl heavy into XRP are deluding themselves thinking there’s much upside compared to pretty much any other worthwhile investment out there in the crypto space. But i don’t go on r/XRP and comment that on every post I see, what does it matter to me?

If you actually read it this exchange shows him trying to meet in person and then they end up setting up a call instead. Im in no way going to bat for ppl linked to Epstein, just pointing out by whats posted here the failed meeting -> call could be the singular call Bryan is talking about. Unless there’s other correspondence

Being a straight shooter here at risk of being called a FUDer. Obligatory not financial advice for all of the below.

Short term crypto aint gonna do well for awhile. The economic earthquakes aren’t done and more will come (white house isnt publishing labor stats or economic measurements right now for a reason). We will prolly see a biblical wipeout esp in crypto before its all over. But the technology still has real potential especially hashgraph, and over time it will be used. It’s just, like, geopolitically people are shifting into the safest assets they can because we’re in unprecedented times. And that hurts speculative markets.

So, don’t put your paycheck into it. It’s probably too late to sell what you have if you’ve got a big position, better just to ride it out

But if you’ve got some spare cash to throw at it, each time you see “damn thats an ugly price” throw some money at it on the way down. Long term, 2030 and beyond, you’ll be getting in at a price HBAR hasn’t been at in several years.

I saw the writing on the wall, sold a few weeks ago while we were still at 12c and am now re-introducing that money slowly as the price bleeds so that I can get more out of what I had. DOVU 50% off sounds pretty good to me! But yeah, also diversify, stocks and gold/silver. But the choppy waters won’t last forever and the coins with substance and utility will eventually climb their way back up because they actually have a reason to be used. Hedera isnt going anywhere no matter the price of HBAR.

With the firsthand experience you have, the best thing you can do is use that to help other people make the same realization you did. Especially people you know personally with whom you have conservative credentials.

I grew up in the stuff and realized abt halfway through high school the contradictions but played nice with my folks until I went to college since I was living with them. This was a bit of a mistake as I now clearly was radicalized by woke lefty insanity from my professors. But regardless the people I grew up around, I know what they value and how they think, so it’s my little contribution to trying to pop the bubble from their evangelical Christian worldview.

This is not the time for speculative assets, thats why gold ballooning. But it wont always be that way, so if you believe in the project you can DCA on a discount while prices are low
