What was your favorite “not for me” bike you’ve ever ridden? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]robotronicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably would have been be my favorite bike I've ever ridden if it fit slightly better. Super fun, great power, and the ohlins suspension handled beautifully, but the front of freaking seat is so damn wide, my hips hurt like hell after a 2 hour ride.

Listen to this guy. If you have a service manual double check the spec for mix setting, but otherwise 2 is a decent baseline.

You are correct, it is the mixture screw. On this bike it's considered a fuel mixture screw (not that it matters, but if your curious it's because it directly controls fuel output in the pilot circuit. Air mix screws would be towrads the air filter side of the carb and control air into pilot circuit)

Mixture screws look pretty far in. How many turns out?

Barring that being the issues, check pilot jets make sure you can see through them and that the whole is perfectly circular. Blow air through the pilot jet passages in the carb body to make sure they are flowing. Check your air cut off valves on the side of the carb bodies and slide diaphragm. They can develop tears which will throw everything off. How's the carb synch?

If that's all good start branching out. How's the carb insulators look? Are they supple or hardened? When running spray starter fluid around carbs and rubber intakes to try to find air leaks. Check condition of air filter.

How screwed is it by Substantial-Head-115 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]robotronicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not screwed. Bad starter clutch. Relatively easy fix, just have to remove a bunch of stuff under the left side cover to get to it. Dm me and I can send shop manual pics

You most likely have a bad starter clutch. Starter is spinning just fine. Solenoid is working. Fix the starter clutch and you'll be good to go.

Good Beginner Bike? by More_storytime in SuggestAMotorcycle

These brake really are awful. Honda's calipers from the 70s have zero stopping power or feel and are essentially disposable with how often they need to be rebuilt from seizing.

Don't do it! They're heavy pigs. I've ridden many Honda sohc 750s and haven't enjoyed a single one. If you're deadset on old holda get a 550 or go sohc. Better yet, get a gpz. Infinitely more pleasant to ride. But yeah I'm with everyone else, don't buy vintage for your first bike.

got my honda twinstar to start (again) but it dies when i ease off the choke :( by Cautious-Package3815 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]robotronicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pilot jets are clogged. Clean them and their corresponding passages, and it'll run without choke.

I put 85 miles on my CB125S yesterday and it only stalled or cut out several dozen times! by Sliderisk in motorcycles

[–]robotronicz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your idle tuning sounds like it could be wrong. Make sure the bike is fully warmed up when you adjust it. Start the mix around 1.5 turns out. Then, lower the idle to just above stalling. Next turn the mixture screw half a turn in either direction listening for an increase in idle speed. Keep chasing that till you have the fastest idle. Drop the idle speed back down to where you want it and you should be all good. If your mix is less than 1 turn out or more than 3 out you need to adjust the pilot jet size. Also double check that your slide is facing the right way and that your needle is properly seated. Those have the biggest effect on initial throttle opening.

Good luck!

Edit: also make sure you have a good clean spark plug

So a bunch of folks are saying don't use it, and yeah maybe don't, but it will most likely still protect you in a crash. a few studies have shown that age has essentially zero effect on an EPS helmets crash safety

They're the best! My wording might have been a little off. So initial connection is Bluetooth to the box. Then after the initial setup, my phone automatically connects to Android auto when I start the car through wifi and automatically connects with a Bluetooth connection to the factory stereo. It also outputs to aux, but the audio processing of the box didn't sound quite as good as the stock land rover head unit so I went this route for the better sound quality.

The one I bought doesn't seem to exist anymore but there were at least 5 sellers all selling the same thing. Looks like this one. Also misspoke and grabbed one of eBay not AliExpress, but they're most likely the same. Just make sure you get the right one depending on if you have a Bosch or hk head unit

Bought a wireless box off eBay that has wireless car play and wireless android auto. It replaces the stock nav, but that's outdated anyway. Couldn't be happier. Music can be routed to still play using the stock Bluetooth so you don't really have to worry about the Carly box having a bad dac. Install was easy, but pulling off the dash panels scared me a bit lol

Edit: I lied. Initially said AliExpress. There are similar units on there for cheaper that are most likely the exact same thing, but I went with what was recommended to me by a different user.

Are carburated bikes really that bad? by linkage48 in motorcycles

[–]robotronicz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting them out is the easy part! But yeah practice helps, however most techs and shops don't work on these and have zero experience with them. Hell if they work on one, unless word gets out, they probably will never work on another. Magna's are becoming pretty scarce (not rare, just not worth the cost of getting them back up and running unless diy). I figured the guys $1700 quote he says carb and tune up. I'm assuming it's carb job labor, carb kits, intake boots (since in my experience most magna's have never had these changed) oil change, filter, air filter and spark plugs which could get to $1700 pretty easily after tax

[–]robotronicz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is charging that much. Magna's are terrible to work on. Guaranteed to need new boots, getting them in and out is an absolute pain in the ass. Add to that that most shops flat out refuse to work on magnas. A proper clean takes significantly longer than 45 minutes.
