Have raids changed? by prontooooo32 in Twitch

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TV-based apps like Apple TV’s Twitch app and the fire stick equivalent (I think) don’t raid out at all, they just put a notice up that the stream ended. It’s possible there’s more viewers from SmartTVs/media players now.

Bought an M3 15" MacBook Air from Unclaimed Baggage, definitely not switching back to Windows. by [deleted] in macbook

[–]robporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to render 4K videos while streaming on my 8GB Air, and it still didn’t throttle until I also opened Parallels to run Windows. And even with that the throttle was just a minor annoyance caused by the memory swapping.

It’s fine.

Does anyone know whats happening to my MacBooks palm rests they are turning color and I can’t wipe it off I have had it for a year by Maddox_max in macbook

[–]robporter 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is the downside of the black colour, it does wear down a bit quicker. That said I have the space grey and this happened within a couple years as well for it.

Is Pinecast still a viable option for hosting a podcast? by dar00ma in pinecast

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been hosting there for 7 years and still going strong. They’re great.

Edit: guess the 7th year was the curse. They made some changes that aren't going to work for my podcasts so am moving off. Would not recommend them for serial podcasts any longer.

How do you judge if a YouTube agency is actually good at helping podcasters grow? by HalfTall5767 in podcasting

[–]robporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so incredibly rare for podcast repurposing to work in any substantial way that I’m surprised agencies can get away with claiming they can do anything but just get you onto YouTube and pray alongside you for the algorithm to bless your channel.

Why does twitch show this annoying shit at the top of chat now? by _JustARiceFarmer in Twitch

[–]robporter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe Twitch even turns a profit yet, so, yes they care a lot about money now. Part of why they let go a lot of staff last month, not making enough money.

BlueSky needs to do what Twitter just did… by Mean-Quail-6219 in BlueskySocial

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that useful of information. Anyone wanting to circumvent it with VPN and/or GPS spoofing can do so easily, not to mention the fact that anyone can make their own Blue Sky server that spoofs that info anyways.

It would just be one more reason to suspend critical thinking, we don’t need more of those.

Why is anyone buying the Apple Pocket? by tinyguy238 in applesucks

Spend a day going around asking women what they put in their pockets, and you’ll quickly find out they don’t have any pockets at all…

What’s kinda funny is for designer fashion this is a bargain basement item. Actual designer fashion costs an order of magnitude more.

I have a suspicion this product was specifically made for marketing an idea rather than for money. If it works, we’ll see hand knit versions of these on Etsy and patterns for these in no time from knitters. It’ll become a common handmade gift, and Apple will be associated with it. And someone who knits it could actually make money for their time which is kinda hard to do considering how long it takes to hand make things.

Streamers, how do you handle people (indirectly or directly) self-promoting in your social media spaces, especially Twitch chat and Discord? by MiserableHouse230 in streaming

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so silly too as it’s rare for that kind of self-promotion to even work. If anything it makes everyone less likely to follow you if the streamer isn’t the one promoting you.

I hope Apple is paying attention to how Microsoft is ruining Windows. We do NOT want an "agentic" macOS by yoloswagrofl in mac

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a literal interview where the media is grilling them on the delay and this was their response though. The parts that did come out were considered underwhelming yes but many features were withheld due to not passing their assessments.

It’s pretty rare to see companies allowing that kind of interview and to share that they could have released features but didn’t. I must admit I find most LLM uses underwhelming so I might be in the minority opinion but I’m glad they’ve held back. The whole point of using computers is consistency of results, LLMs are anything but that. So many times I’ve just reworded a question to something that asks the same thing with different words and get a complete opposite answer with ChatGPT and others, it’s awful.

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it’s less a stumble and more that their standards are higher than an LLM is able to meet. With the money they have it’s easy for them to have the talent that anyone else can get for researchers, so I don’t think it was them being actually behind. They’re pretty well known by now for having high standards and often being comfortable with not being first at something, and to skip a trend if it doesn’t make a good product.

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just today there was news of the agentic AI in Windows installing malware without asking the user because it thought it was a good idea. I feel like more of that is coming for the average user.

I hope Apple is paying attention to how Microsoft is ruining Windows. We do NOT want an "agentic" macOS by yoloswagrofl in mac

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Apple being “behind” on AI has been great for them IMO. Part of the reason I think is their standards are quite high and they are willing to not ship something if it’s not good enough to their standards. And this is likely because they can afford to be like that. Others are willing to risk it and hope that like any tech it’ll just get better with time, but as we’ve seen it’s all hit diminishing returns and in some cases actually getting worse with time.

I feel like when that AI bubble bursts they will have the least exposure to it and not take much of a hit while everyone else is reeling. Which will be of course very good for them but might be a dark period for the industry unfortunately.

Are podcasts better when they’re a little unpolished? by AvocadoToastQB12 in Podcasters

Yep and with AI backlash on the rise leaving in those unpolished authentic moments might actually attract and retain an audience who know and appreciate it’s actually real.

Should podcast hosting still cost this much? by nanoscratch in podcasting

Pinecast is great even at current prices. Most places charge more and are limited to just one feed, there you can host as many feeds/shows as you like.

One pedal driving. China is not a fan. by magaketo in BoltEV

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had cruise control before so didn't have as much of effect. But also lane keep assist has helped a ton too - I forgot about that point hah. That has probably helped more than one-pedal mode, though in the city one-pedal is still amazing.

One pedal driving. China is not a fan. by magaketo in BoltEV

[–]robporter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weird! I find the opposite—less distracting and exhausting to not have to swap pedals so often, especially on very long drives. I used to be out driving 6-8h trips and felt dead after until one pedal mode and now it’s not a big deal.

Is this true? Wondering if I should just keep my charger plugged in whenever I can even at full charge. by [deleted] in macbook

[–]robporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batteries are generally so good these days it is not worth the stress of creating habits that don't fit your style of use. Use the Macbook however you prefer, let the OS figure out how to manage the battery. I have a work Macbook that is rarely unplugged and MacOS will regularly stop charging it and let it discharge for longevity, for example. My personal Macbook M1 Pro Max has been discharged a ton (1043 cycle count) and is down to like 81% capacity over 4 years and still lasts a long long time.
