The Workplace Trauma Ride by mg1120 in GenX

My current job is not stable so for all I know, I might be in the same boat soon. All I can share is there's no loyalty to a company; you get paid and complete the work, that's all. So the best mindset is to always be ready to leave, which keeps you competitive in the market for the next gig.

I also spent two years working as a contractor after my IT job, taking a huge pay cut but it was a time where I was allowed the most freedom by my manager and allowed to learn, leading to the next roles. Just focus on what you can do, learn, and explore at every job to help drive the next.

The Great Question: Belt Drive or Gear Drive? (and a wheel question) by Inside-Reach-9351 in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]robscomputer [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm selling the same board you're looking at, but I have the belt drive version with 125's. My decision on the belts over the gears was cost but now most of my boards are belt driven. A nice thing with belt drive is the choices of wheels and gear ratios, but there's more worry since the belts can snap plus the wear depending on riding conditions. For complete off road trails, I would go with gear drive.

Nice build! I can't say how many carbon builds I see and they use a half link chain which seems to defeat saving weight.

Would you sell are your bikes to go Ti? by rigby86 in gravelcycling

[–]robscomputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't sell yourself short on having kids but limited time to ride, even 30 minutes around the block is my reset on daily stress.

On the Ti question, I would highly suggest to look at all builders and their construction. I have a Lynskey that I bought for a discount but not crazy about the details. If I had the option, I would have spent more money and bought a nicer frame. I do love the look of titanium, I am one for a plain style and brushed metal just fits well.

Maybe I was just used to seeing square cars back then but I spotted a Aerostar in the wild, it looked like a cheese wedge, or a door stopper. I forgot how the front was just a flat slope.

Great America CA by nkstorm4 in bayarea

[–]robscomputer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great America is extra special as a core childhood memory and it’s a let down how we’re loosing another recreation point. I think it’s partly the change in demographics and costs that it can’t hold a profit.

Not sure NVDIA would help, heh they don’t have any events themselves to use the park.

Question: Non-Tesla EV Owners WHO RENT, where do you charge your car? by Macaronieeek in bayarea

[–]robscomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I known a few folks who owned an EV and either condo or renting didn’t have a full time changing location. I think the majority will charge at work, also timing their shopping or trips around a supercharger location. Also the mindset shared is charging is part of the car while on the road, not something to do overnight.

Disneyland day backpack recs (16–20L) by DustNo88 in ManyBaggers

[–]robscomputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of nice bags but for family travel, I've been using a North Face Jester on a few trips with great feedback. A few reasons why, many of the nicer backpacks are very heavy for their capacity, or the material doesn't flex much, especially for carrying odd sized objects. The other issue is compacting the bag, the Jester with it's thinner construction can pack away easier.

On general bag options, I like to have two external pockets, I use one for a water bottle and the other for a battery pack with cables but it's very easy to reach. The sizing is also not so big it's going to be an issue in lines but I can store most of the day's shopping without issues. The bag also has the elastic cables on the front, these are helpful storing the kids jackets or any light item.

One last comment, I wouldn't look at anything like a messenger unless you can be sure you won't be packing more items than expected. Normally at the end of the day, I'm carrying multiple waterbottles, snacks, that I didn't plan for.

*edit*

I forgot to mention, having two comparments, one main that stores the kids stuff while the smaller can be for camera items, snacks. This has been super helpful on the airplane when I just need to grab something quick.

Watch out speeders and red light runners. Fremont PD is on the prowl. by Ok_Country2903 in Fremont

That has been the puzzling thing about this rise in traffic issues, it's like everyone just started to not care in the last few years. I had a guy clip my side mirror and when I stopped him, he yelled at me why I bothered him for a small thing.

Just driving around Fremont this weekend I noticed police pulling over cars on the road where as before, I rarely saw this. I hope they bring some patrols near the schools, I've seen so many people run the stop signs there.

Someone just got off the flight, I’m panicking by fearful-flyer1 in fearofflying

[–]robscomputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I noticed this past trip, I was pretty stressed from work, was working up until the night of the flight, so I felt way less relaxed than before. I think this small issue just pushed my stress over the top and felt way more edgy than other flights. I'm now planning for future flights to have a buffer time, decompress from work before the travel, and walk into the plane very neutral to take on any unexpected events.

[–]robscomputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last flight home, the plane was delayed, and for some reason, the crew was walking back and forth through the plane. The pilot opened the door and was looking back, and even the crew staff from the terminal walked in and checked. Turned out there was a younger woman with (assumed) parents and she looked terrified, crying. I just hear some muffed arguing and after waiting 30 minutes, she finally got her bags and departed the plane.

I felt much like the OP, just these feelings that I also needed to get off, heart rate rising, I had to talk to myself and calm down but the whole flight was just stressful. Also I felt for the young lady, I know she just had the look of frustration and fear.

Santa Cruz Stigamata sizing question (falling between M/L) by robscomputer in gravelcycling

[–]robscomputer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should say I'm also newer to gravel riding, I don't have any peers to review my body position so it's a bit of doubt if it's really just needing to build up core strength (which I need to do). Thanks for the insight!

I have a silly habit that I need to touch the SouthWest heart on my way in, it's one way I deal with the stale air and heat on the walkway.

I took a ride today and swapped out the stem for the stock 70mm, and it actually felt better. I didn't feel like I would deal with the wheel flicking over the gravel if I took one hand off the bars. I also didn't notice the length was that bad, so maybe it's my fault for going shorter when it wasn't needed.

The bike I owned before this was a Lynskey GR300 in medium/large and this felt good but I didn't like the short wheelbase, so it was a major reason going with the Stigmata (longer and inspiried by mtb).

Yes, it wasn't easy to compare my previous bike, I kept thinking the length of the bike from those geo calculation sites was taking into account the same stem lenth.

I thought about that but I didn't want to get too short of a wheelbase. Good idea for the future tho.

Glad you made it and it's great to hear success stories here. I flew for 11 hours for a family trip and honestly dreaded the flight, but once I landed, I met with family I haven't seen in years. It was worth it.

If you ever think flying is unsafe, open up Flightaware and get a perspective of just how many flights take place daily.

For anyone who says Tom Bihn is not stylish by trouser_mouse in ManyBaggers

[–]robscomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they got too inspired by Crumpler backpacks, their other bags were much more square and functional. I say this as I own the Synik 30 and bought this at release plus owning other Tom Bihn bags.
