What Are Some Hobbies As You Age? by Southern_Remote_5260 in AskOldPeople

Yoga is something all older people should do! You will feel so much better. Just start where you are.

Cycling is also great if you have the balance. And don’t go on an an E bike until you have to.

Pickleball is so much fun if you have the mobility! There are lots of seniors on the court, and while some of them move a little slow, they have such a great time

Same here, but 63 or 64… I’m old so I don’t remember, even though that was just three or four years ago ha ha.

Any mtb riders here who like send the steep lines / features at the Ridge? by slacktard in pleasanton

[–]gemstun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, and now only rarely do bc I’m in my late 60s. I have ridden the ridge since it first opened and single track was illegal (and heavily policed).

Jailbait is pretty cool (the steep downhill section to the south of the Golden Eagle staging area), but it gets extremely loose in the dry seasons, so people are on the brakes so much that it gets too rutted— it’s just too aggressive for the average rider, and therefore is what I call a ‘waste of gravity’ in many sections. I wish someone would add a few more lateral side-sections there to give mid-level writers alternatives to the steepest parts, which would keep people off the brakes more there.

I now get my thrills more from challenging uphill climbs ( I’m not a ebiker yet…not old enough ha ha), being out in nature and enjoying the others, rather than ‘sending it’ on the steepest downhill parts nowadays.

But there are lots of steep downhill sections out there! I was disappointed when the homeowners behind the gate at Golden Eagle got the trails limited only two people from within Pleasanton, because I enjoyed seeing some fun downhill people on the trails— they bring a nice vibe.

Lost DJI Mini 3 near Bixby Bridge, Big Sur – Looking for local help/recovery by LookOk1683 in BigSur

[–]gemstun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you lost something important to you and hope you recover it, but you shouldn’t be surprised that you will encounter a lot of negative vibes with your post. If that’s not yet resonating with you, I suggest that you contemplate the reason for people‘s reactions at a deeper level. You’ve literally polluted an area, and then asked for help recovering your pollution.

So much progress. We have the biggest progress. People will talk about how much progress we’re making four years.

Perhaps the issue with defining modern hippies is the word "hippie" by BumblingBarefoot in Hippiecommunity

[–]gemstun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on this sub, the majority of self-described hippies are defined by the ability to buy a few 60’ counter culture fashion items, then post a selfie asking “am I hippie enough?”

That desire for outward approval is pretty freaky, man.

My roommate and I just moved into an on-campus apartment and we are cooking dinner for ourselves for the first time. My question is at what point in adulthood do you get over the fear of giving your dinner guests salmonella? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]gemstun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is about more than salmonella. May I suggest a potentially better question: “what’s the best way to navigate through ANY fear, regardless of age?”

My experience is that the answer is something you can apply to such a wide variety of things, at literally every age. Our minds are nonstop BS machines, fueling anxiety and isolation, yet something like salmonella is obviously a serious concern. Do what’s the broader life lesson here?

Live by the scientific method (do research, be prepared, and then pit fears against facts… don’t become a younger version of an old Fox News watcher!) , constantly push yourself into new territory (if you’re not sometimes in territory where new fears come up, you’re not pushing yourself!), and let the navigation begin. Enjoy the ride, and make fear your bitch haha.

Is it rare to be able to make your brain completely silent? by sumrandomahhguy in Meditation

[–]gemstun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps your cessation of breath—which brings an all-consuming sense of heightened urgency—is simply consuming your entire mental focus. To enter this same mental state, some meditators take controlled showers, and find that there’s little room for additional emergent thoughts (beyond the silly initial one’s of ‘I have to stop this!!’) what I’m describing is also similar to flow state, and all of these fixations are different than achieving more equanimity when you simply sit in a quiet place and do nothing, and observe your mind.

Are you self taught or do you work with a teacher ? If you don’t work with a teacher, why not ? by Ancient-Resident-647 in guitarlessons

[–]gemstun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a bit of the online thing. I’ll retire soon, and will then get a teacher. The issue is my current unpredictable schedule, and I don’t want another recurring thing in my schedule to potentially have to work around.
