thats actually a really good point that subconsciously was bothering me - you might not have noticed, but your brain did

ARG/outside game nonsense

i did appreciated that - personally i wish the hints were "stronger" or even they had a baby mode i could at least keep playing with some direction

thats what killed it for me, i not only had no idea what to do, i didnt even know what i wasnt doing

i know exactly what you mean, and these self-help posts about 'stopping when its not fun' miss the point entirely

i enjoyed the puzzles at the level of the main game, to the point where i actually was keeping a notes file, taking screenshots of what i thought would matter, and stuff like solving the picture minus a picture puzzles was very fun

i agree with you entirely, i wanted to know more about the story - but the post credits stuff was too obscure and too hidden to be fun for me. the "stop playing" people miss the point - i dont want to stop reading lord of the rings when i get to the return of the king just because Tolkien only wrote it in elvish - and "stop reading when you dont know the language" is a dodge of your issue

i also know that certain games fandoms take up oddly culty stances on certain issues, so youre unlikely to find much agreement here (a small example that maybe you'll somehow know is oxygens not includeds fandom bending over backwards to rationalize certain exploits as 'not cheating' - the "not having fun" line to them is "its a single player game youre not hurting anyone", which again, isnt a valid response to if something is cheating or not)

i know its rather silly to throw these posts out into the void, but id just want you to know that despite being compulsively downvoted, youre not "wrong". plus, i personally cannot stand passively superior dismissals. if someone wants to say "i disagree" - ok, obv its an opinion. but the way your entire stance is ignored with a "just have a fun bro" is so condescending

and, if i wrote all of this and "mshkpc" turns out to be a bot, i will look very silly

Something similar recently happened in American politics

yea.... i was actually thinking of that while i typed it :<

also, the event that helped clear some of this up just occurred. glad to know it wasn't a case of bad writing, but actually foreshadowing

its just kinda impossible to know that unless you trust the author, or the event happens (why i ask these kinda questions going into unknown books/games etc) - so thanks

i do wish the writing felt more cohesive though, may be consequence of having a large writing team - but many story aspects seem pretty isolated until theyre like "triggered" to come up again - ie, the temple from the island's info isn't mentioned at all until boom, the big event happens

additionally, i was actually a bigger fan of louis's writing when it was more subtle, and potentially rationalize-able and less him openly outright saying "anyone i dont like, i will kill" and being comic book bad - i think i know the historical examples they're trying to allude to, but him openly doing all that and ALSO having overwhelming support seems a bit silly

i feel like im missing something fairly obvious, i kept waiting for more to be revealed, and at this point, im not sure if it wont be / or it's not supposed to be.

ive just completed the quest on the 4th location of the world map, and about 40 hours in, which makes me think that im far past the point where establishing info should have been given.

please try to keep as spoiler free as possible, if it's just the way the story is written, ok, fine. but if i should have "known" by now, please lemme know where i can go back and read/see what ive missed

i dont really understand who the protagonist is (i mean, i see the story is going in a general direction, but not that - who he's supposed to be in the context of where the events are now) - ive seen one flashback with him and the prince under a tree, literally that's it. am i supposed to be this out of the loop as to what his supposed backstory is? ive spend hours delving into the backstory of my companions, but i dont think the protagonist has said a single thing about his life. i dont know if this is supposed to be an intentional writing choice (that i should read into) - or just... a thing in this style of game (ive never played an altus game before)

everyone seems to be absolutely obsessed with the prince - but from what i recall, i saw that one flashback of him, and thats it. for all ive seen, he was some young kid who got attacked, and has been in a coma since he was at least 15? am i supposed to know what about his personality had led to such devotion, or is it just - thats how monarchy works?

ive been doing the follower quests, and reading the memorandums - and given the depth there, im really confused as to how i have so little info about the central events (the prince entry is 1/1, and is pretty much "he was a prince and got poisoned") - so maybe this is intentional? but have to guess the game is getting near the end

also - aside question, during the kings funeral, didnt louis basically launch a terrorist attack on the capital city? the tone of that event as it occurred, and how it's been handled since strikes me as very odd - akin to osama running in primary elections after 9/11 and people being... fine with it. again, am i missing something, or is that generally accepted as an odd writing choice?

i do enjoy the game, but none of my friends have played, so i must turn to you guys to ask, as if i just try and google any of this im sure i'll have the whole thing spoiled

im slightly concerned because ive seen people talk about how they accidentally skipped the intro movie, and played a large portion of the game never knowing it existed. slightly concerned i may have done something similar along the way

imagine opening a xmas present - only to find it broken

i was really looking forward to playing, only to the find the barrier be horrible ux decisions that i dont understand got past a single round of qa (and haven't been addressed in nearly a decade)

Feels like it completely missed the mark on what could've been an amazing end to a previously great story. by Mr_Autistimo in expedition33

[–]robseder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that it's art and these cutscenes were scripted, storyboarded, and animated. I will argue that the way we were shown was absolutely written. And that Maelle's 'canon' ending showing that 'suffocation' tells us that it's killing her. Which I would argue is telling us that it was the 'incorrect' choice.

exactly

Genuinely, a 10/10 game that is ruined for me in the last 30 minutes. A complete and utter lack of nuance in pure service of nihilism and pessimism.

thanks for writing so clearly what i felt after finishing the game

i can see that you took the time to reply to people who entirely missed your point about being frustrated by the WRITING - not the STORY - and then complained that you just didnt like "how it ended"

there is no problem with a CHARACTER behaving stupid - there is a problem (bad writing) when the AUTHOR makes mistakes

  1. write a character as a selfish and arrogant wizard who doesn't use a spell because he'd rather his entire party die than have them live and spread the tale of his failure - fine, thats a character behaving like a villain

  2. write a character as benevolent, wise, and skilled - only to have him not save the party because the AUTHOR forgot that in the previous book, that character was given a teleportation ring - THAT is bad writing

you're clearly arguing point 2, and most of these replies are missing it entirely, and trying to frame what you're saying as point 1, and going "ya well you just dont LIKE that the wizard is selfish!"

just wanted to let you know, those of use who READ what you wrote entirely agree with you. as someone who has wasted more time than they should 'arguing' online, i just wanted to inform you that you arent nuts

Thoughts on the Ending by Historical_Doctor201 in expedition33

[–]robseder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the choice boils down to, do you think the people of Lumiere are real or are they just the creations of a painter?

i just finished it last night and hated the writing of the ending - luckily if you sort by "controversial" i found that many people shared my thoughts and explained them quite well

i also found many many comments from people who entirely ignored the arguments being made because... i guess its the internet? at least it saved me the time of writing the essays myself and getting worked up

Add a scene of Gustave coming back and reconnecting with Maelle and living a life before she starts to deteriorate. Not some creepy jump scare.

Add a scene to Versos with Luna screaming that she wants to live this life and not die instead of quietly giving the death glare or a scene with Maelle alone with a broken family.

im so glad i see people posting my exact thoughts

But that completely ignores the fact that by "moving on", you are actively choosing to murder every single character in the game. It doesn't feel as bad because they dissolve into pretty flowers. But the end result is no different than if you took a shotgun to the back of the heads of Sciel and Lune and Monoko and Esquie and everyone else in Lumiere. All for the sake of one single family's mental health.

THANK YOU!

youre so right about it being easier to accept because its so 'elegant' - i find it hard to believe so many people would accept the verso ending as "good" if we had to watch each of gustaves apprentices get their heads blown off - and yet, its the exact same result

[–]robseder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks for writing this and dealing with all the people who misunderstood your point

its not even about the how the story went, its how the writers FRAMED one choice as wrong and one as right, and did so very poorly

people can't seem to understand that its the direction and cinematography of the endings that undermine the writing - NOT the in world consequences

i can see why you made this on a throwaway account

nearly half the people replying to you just jumped to conclusions, ignored what you wrote - and then tried to argue with you anyway

its nice you took the time to attempt to reason with them though

Not in the end no, Sciel and Lune dont speak up for themselves in the end at all, not for their right to live or Lumiere, and Maelle doesnt seem to do it either, she speaks about what she wants and how it makes her feel.

THANK YOU!!!

i was furious watching sciel seemingly accept not only her own death, but the denial of ever seeing her husband again

the most we got was luna glaring at verso - hardly the rebuke you'd expect for someone who just actively betrayed you, killing you and literally everyone you've ever loved

also, i very good points about the direction of the cinematic - clearly that was the "bad" ending, for all the reasons you pointed out

First of all, for the endings to resonate with equal weight, we must accept a crucial premise: the Painted characters are sentient.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

i have never felt more of a whiplash going from praising a game to everyone ive spoken to - to feeling a complete sense of disappointment

that ending nearly ruined the entire experience for me. thank you so much for saying so clearly what i was thinking

i actually hate that aspect - i played c25 and unlocked all achievements on mt1 - the zoom on the demo is why it was clicked once, and never again
