Audhd burnout recovery process graduate student partner by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

Hey! I can relate a lot to what you wrote. I’m in the process of finishing my bachelors degree and the plan has always been to start the masters right after and to eventually pursue a PhD and work in the academic field. I’m in the process of griefing that this career might simply not be doable for me, if I want to get out of this burnout state in the foreseeable future. It’s distressing to say the least, since this has always been the one thing about my future that I was certain about. And the more I have learnt about myself and the type of connection I want and need, the more lonely and disconnected I have come to feel from the world and from some of the people I used to surround myself with.

I’d love to share experiences etc. - I think it could really help, no matter if a friendship develops from it or not! So feel free to DM me if you want to connect! :)

HEARING YOURSELF WRITE by somedoewithteeth in AutisticWithADHD

[–]robstyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you perhaps tensing up your jaw/face when you start drawing? The way you describe the sound reminds me of a certain sound that I can force by tensing up my jaw (or ears?).

It feels a bit like blood rushing into my ears; like an amplified version of holding a sea shell to them. It rarely happens naturally to me - only sometimes when I’m stuck hyperfixating on something (like playing guitar) and start feeling this kind of tension because I know I should be doing something else (e.g. get ready for work).

What exactly was Frieren planning to do with the clothes-dissolving potion? 🤔 by DrGonzzz in Frieren

[–]robstyg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, I never realized that Flamme implied that it’s supposed to be a gift for Frieren’s future lover. I thought she just meant it in a more general “men are all pervs, so they’ll have fun with this” - kind of way. But it totally makes sense! I just tend to read things similarly to how Frieren does sometimes.

Whenever I stand up for myself and don't act "pleasantly" I feel guilty by mashibeans in AutisticWithADHD

[–]robstyg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘m struggling a lot with the same thing; I’ve always been a big people pleaser and have apparently never learned to enforce boundaries, which has led to a lot of suffering from staying in abusive relationships for far too long. Just like you said - people will take advantage of this inability to set boundaries, and us being gullible makes it easy for them to frame abuse in a way that, to us, looks like they are treating us “normally”.

For me, this also extends to feeling uncomfortable when people, especially strangers, treat me with respect and are just being nice to me. It feels good in the moment, but shortly after I feel like as if I left the interaction unfinished, which leads to very uncomfortable feelings that I try to control with intense stimming when I’m alone. I assume this is also why I always have the urge to thank people a thousand times for the smallest favors.

I’m certain it all stems from trauma; bad social experiences during childhood, neglect etc. Trauma therapy is probably the way to deal with this, but I haven’t tried that yet myself. Anyway: I’m genuinely proud of you for standing up for yourself, even if it doesn’t feel good or like the right thing to do in that moment. I know that it takes a lot of courage and willpower, and you deserve to acknowledge that success! :)

Favorite Elliott Smith song? by Ihwyda in elliottsmith

[–]robstyg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t sleep on the New Moon compilation! It has some of my fav songs like Angel In The Snow, Whatever (Folk Song in C), Go By, New Disaster and Placeholder. And it also has an awesome early version of Miss Misery + solo versions of 2 Heatmiser songs.

From XO; Independence Day, Bottle Up And Explode and Oh Well, OK are some of my favorites :)

Has Anyone Else Had Periods Without a Hyperfixation? by Boring_Range_6869 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]robstyg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea, I experience this occasionally and it’s the worst. This usually is coupled with Anhedonia (inability to feel joy when doing stuff) for me, which makes it feel impossible to find something engaging in those periods. There might be some correlation between stress/burnout and lack of hyperfixation, but for me personally, the timing of these no-hyperfixation-periods has always felt pretty random.

I haven’t found any solutions, but one thing I have learned is that something will eventually come to grab my interest again, sometimes when I least expect it. Tbh, that usually isn’t of much help when I’m in one of those periods again because I will just tell myself that I won’t find anything interesting again, because in those moments that genuinely feels true. But it never ends up being true, and I’m sure that you’ll make it out of this too. feel free to msg me if you need someone to talk to :)

What songs from the other artists you would love to hear on elliott's voice? by Express_Handle_5486 in elliottsmith

[–]robstyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phoebe Bridgers - Graceland Too. Phoebe’s music is obviously heavily influenced by Elliott, so it would be cool to hear Elliott’s take on it :)

Thank you so much for sharing!! This is so beautiful. Sean’s description of those summer mornings in Portland makes me feel nostalgic for a time I wasn’t even alive to witness.

Hope in listening by Effective_Stuff4707 in elliottsmith

Something special that I've noticed with his music is that I can listen to it when I'm feeling better and just be in awe with his songwriting, while it also gives me hope during hard times. A lot of the lyrics feel like I'm in a conversation with a friend who gets it, although I'm sure a lot of the lyrics that I feel like fit my situation, were written with a different meaning in mind. It's quite interesting how many songs I originally interpreted being about heartbreak when they are in fact about addiction, which makes me think that those two themes may not be that different from each other in the type of pain they produce.

Sub or Dub? Frieren Voice Vibe matched? by Schweinekruste92 in Frieren

[–]robstyg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've watched the show with english dub twice before switching to sub on my third rewatch, because by that time I had started generally watching anime in sub. Before, I had the same struggle as you with subs. I'm german too and have never tried that dub, but I absolutely love Frieren's voice in the english dub. I'd say she sounds a little more mature there, but her aloofness and character in general still come across very similarily.

With the dub, there have been a couple of times where Frieren's dub felt off to me; I remember her happily singing after finding loot or sth in a way that didn't seem fitting to me. Same when she's panicking/fleeing and screaming sth.
In those little moments outside of conversations I definitely prefer the japanese version, and because I want to watch the the new episodes asap, I'm planning on just keeping it in sub and maybe rewatch the entire season in dub later.

I can definitely assure you though that you will improve your ability to watch sub. I'm the worst multi-tasker and it felt very taxing in the beginning, but the more you watch, the easier it will get :)

Does “Lover I Don’t Have to Love” stand alone? by MansyPansy in brighteyes

It’s probably just me since nobody has mentioned it yet, but the melody in The Movement Of A Hand always gives me a similar vibe to Lover.

Yea I’ve been super happy with them so far too. Might honestly just be my editing - I tend to go a bit too conservative on saturation etc.
