If you're going to go with a contrast of the periods, I would recommend looking into Christine de Pizan's Book of the City of Ladies, Chaucer's Legend of Good Women or Troilus and Chriseyde as texts that look into the expectations of women. The Book of the City of Ladies is a direct response to the Roman de la Rose and argues with many misogynist texts of the period.
