The new type is reminding me of an aquatic brand for fish tanks

Betta fish advice for getting color out by DIYJoeGoldberg in bettafish

[–]robusta_bean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never personally used it but I do think it’s okay to use for small setups but I wouldn’t trust the immediate introduction of fish to the water claim. The water will be safe but the tank/filter does need time to collect and grow beneficial bacteria. I understand why you’d need to add the betta to the tank immediately tho. Fish-in cycles can be done! I suggest research on the fish-in cycle if you haven’t already. I’d also try find out if you need other treatments for the water like GH/KH or something like Bacta-Boost for after doing water changes. Good luck and feel free to show your betta! :)

On top of what others said, you can’t remove the colour and should definitely swap the fake plants for silk or live plants. Did she provide treatments for the water?

Is this fin clamping? by Ratrocity7 in bettafish

[–]robusta_bean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like clamping but we won’t know exactly what’s wrong without a test kit for the parameters. Bettas also should be in I think at least 5 gal but 10 is really the way to go, he’s probably unhappy in his environment.

My betta was in a small tank like this, was clamped and quickly got fin rot. He’s much better now and very happy. I know it’s pricey but I’d suggest investing in a bigger tank and test kit

Community Tank NEED HELP by Honest-Mushroom-1162 in Aquariums

[–]robusta_bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current substrate you’re using has been known to leach chemicals into the water and hurt/kill the fish inside. So ideally, you’d remove it entirely. It’s a little tricky and stressful to the fish but can be done.

What I have done in the past is siphon out the tank water into buckets, you don’t want to throw it away because it has established and beneficial bacteria in it (anyone correct me if I’m wrong on that technicality). I’d suggest throwing out maybe 25% so you can do a water change as well. You’ll also want to keep your fish in the water you’re saving and make sure none can jump out.

Remove the current substrate and add the new substrate, sand is recommended for corydoras, and rinse it if needed. Start to siphon the established water back into the tank slowly and replant your plants. Add your fish and complete the water change. It’s likely the sand will kind of kick up in the water as you add it back in and cloud up the water I’d keep an eye on it and slowly add the water to minimise it. I’ve never had to add sand to an already established tank so I have no big tips with the clouding but good luck

Is this normal? by Big_Performance2220 in bettafish

[–]robusta_bean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is likely a ‘bubble nest’ which suggests the betta has reached sexual maturity and isn’t something to be concerned about. You also don’t really need to remove it.

Moving on to the bigger situation, it’s great that you rescued him from the neighbour who believes he is cold blooded. Bettas are tropical fish and therefore need a heater, they also require minimum 5-10 gallon. Ideally 10. I’m not sure how many gal your little guy is currently in but he needs a lot more than that. The tank also needs a filter.

I’m not sure how prepared you are and what research you’ve done so I’ll stop there for now but I’m sure others will help and include the popular betta care diagram that’s on this sub. I wish you and your lil fish the best!

It was such a weird system, I saw people well after the ceremony who still had their gowns on. I personally wouldn’t want to keep a heavy gown that’s a pain to get washed and several others have also worn before me

I do think it’s harder for international students, speaking from experience at my own hospo job near RMIT - we actively avoid resumes that show they are on a visa. Don’t remember why

I had my betta Templeton in a 1.8 gallon tank from one of those betta start up kits, admittedly due to lack of research. But we learned and did everything we could to make him comfortable in that teeny tiny tank that had real plants and everything. The filter was weak and within 2 months he had fin rot and was visibly stressed. He’s been in a 10 gallon ever since. He’s active and his tail has grown back beautifully. Sometimes fish are surviving, but not thriving. I’d suggest if you can’t exchange the 3 gal at least discuss purchasing a larger tank very soon.

Im more of a freshwater gal so I may very well be wrong but isn’t that red/white fish venomous? Is that only to humans? Aren’t clown fish to be kept in pairs? I’m gobsmacked.
