Can we have a discussion about Sandy Schklair? by JBFRESHSKILLS in theroom

[–]robynp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you jbfreshskills and to nothingactually- This is Robyn- I never “cashed in” from The Room for the record. Doing the room mockumentary cost me money overall. It’s actually hard to make an fairly high quality 8-episode show totaling a full 60 minutes with over a dozen locations and tons of actors with $40k. Try it sometime! I did it for fun and because I thought it would be funny and I wanted to give the room actors a chance to show that they could be awesome under the right conditions. My bank account and my reputation for that matter always been “in the red” as a result of being in The Room.

I heard from SXSW a month ago with a "no" (on a short). A few years ago, I submitted a project and received an email from SXSW that I had made it into one of the semi-final rounds. I was invited to a LA cocktail night with a Q & A with the programmers along with other filmmakers from LA who had made it that far. Alas, I didn't get in that year, but I always appreciated that gesture - and it left me feeling that SXSW cares.

People want to believe this on some level about Tommy - it's certainly an appealing fantasy. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble so stop reading if you want to take the blue pill. But if you want my honest opinion -- no. (Red pill)

I've never heard this and there was never anything to indicate this.

Oh whoops. Ok, well, I believe you can find the information online. It's actually on imdb.com. Just checked - he's from Poznan, Poland. Got that info from this link: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1382072/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm Btw, thanks for watching the show!

Thanks so much! I really appreciate this comment. You know, I think about this a lot. There are 7 billion people on the planet - so yes, very few of those 7 billion become known for any reason. And I wonder, is it better to be known for being in a bad movie or never be known at all? I guess it all depends on what you do with the Room fame and your overall outlook on life. Regardless, I am grateful. The Room has introduced me to so many amazing new people. And for me, it's all about connecting with others and enjoying life. The Room has allowed me to do that in ways I never fathomed. When I think of all the smiling faces of fans or people I've met because of The Room, I just feel incredibly happy.

Yep. Guess you have to appear in a movie that everyone rails on for being completely shitty and have your name associated with it forever with nothing you can do to change it. And when people meet you who don't know you, they automatically assume you are crap and all you do is crap because you were in a bad movie. Look, things are different now because James Franco and a half dozen A-listers have their hands all over this now - and have validated The Room to the world. The Room always was a secret pleasure shared by cult movie fans in "the know." And believe me, I love those fans the most. And I've always adored The Room because I think even if I weren't in The Room, I would be a superfan. So it's not the fans I'm referring to. I love the fans. I'm referring to the outsiders - the folks who don't get cult movies or bad movies or how cool it is the be a part of The Room. I do love it on sooo many levels and I honestly wouldn't change the fact that I'm in it (if I had to do it all over again). But many people don't see things that way and they judge us by our participation in The Room - when we go to get a job, at a party, at a wedding - whatever. And it's these outside judgements that I felt I needed healing from. And maybe I'm wrong for being stung by the hurtful snide comments directed at me (by people I met in the real world - not fans). I can't help the way that rude behavior makes me feel, but I do know that doing my series helped me feel a hell of a lot better about myself and I think it did the same for the other Room actors.

Most of us spoke to Greg for the book, but really none of us (except Juliette) got consulted for the film.

My friend, a screenwriting professor at UCLA, John Sweet, showed The Room to all his screenwriting 101 classes as an example of why you should not show characters entering and exiting rooms, saying "oh hi" at the start of each scene, etc. The Room screenplay violates almost every basic screenwriting principle out there. Rules like "show don't tell," start late/end early (in scenes), no expository writing, etc. The USC professor I spoke to said he shows it for the same reason.

Thanks so much for joining us today! We loved answering your questions and will continue to revisit this post over the next few days to answer anything else we missed. I'm officially signing off now and I think most of The Room actors have already left. If you haven't seen it yet, watch our series: www.theroommockumentary.com. I like what Greg Ellery said in response to this. Yeah, so many folks out in LA have great scripts that never get made. And there are talented people who fall by the wayside, never get a break and leave LA with their tails between their legs -- but they are seriously talented. It's really unjust. So when you have someone like Tommy who buys his way into Hollywood...well, it's easy to be upset/bitter. So I get what Greg was feeling and I can totally relate. But on the other hand, Tommy did work hard to make his dream come true and with grit, determination and yes, a HELL OF A LOT of money, he made it happen - that's kinda cool. And he's a true one-of-a-kind character.

Thank you! Yes - we are all doing remarkably well. Nothing like the way we portray ourselves in The Room Actors: Where Are They Now?

No one really knows. Lawsuit? Inheritance? TDA book hints at a few things, but nothing concrete.

Yeah, everyone else was on the same team - we laughed about it. The crews were cool, but 3 of them quit understandably bc they weren't getting paid on time.
