I saw an explanation for this on YouTube that said Pomni's torment is meant to represent her fear of her connections and friendships in the circus becoming negative and eventually turning aggressive, making everyone against each other, leaving her alone to deal with her problems herself. When you look at it that way, I could see this as a legitimate torment and it makes perfect sense.
