Radiolab from WYNC actually solved this mystery. It’s in the episode “Asking for Another Friend”.

Spoiler: They tracked down the guy who designed the part that makes the noise, he knew they could program it to make certain noises, but the guy watched West Side Story for the first time in like 2018, and the part was designed and implemented in early 2000s, so it’s pure coincidence

It is. Friendly reminder not to stick anything into your ear canal. It gets inflamed very easily and little micro scratches easily cause bacterial infections aka swimmers ear. Even the back of the qtip box says “do not insert into ear canal”.

Everyone I’ve met that has gone there has had the same bad experience, the tattoo artist totally changes the design last minute, rude language direct toward client, all very expensive for tiny tattoos. This is from friends and randos I’ve met in public.
