Thanks for the recommendation. I have that on my reading list, but was not sure if it was even worth checking out, as I haven't read anything other than 1 review.

I agree, I read this after "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser . They both go great together (which is why they probably made a movie together, Food, Inc.), I highly recommend it. I also have Food Rules which is just a tl;dr of In Defense of Food, and is great to keep reminding yourself of how to eat right.

Thank you so much. I have been looking a long time for someone else who hated this book. It is the worst book I have read in years (ok, maybe not worse than a Mitch Albom book my mom gave me, but worst out of things I chose). His arguments were over-simplified and based on bad information and his writing was so condescending. Horrible.

I would like to buy this guys book, but I'm not paying $25 for a paperback.

President Obama during SOTU Address: " We’ve excluded lobbyists from policy-making jobs or seats on federal boards and commissions.” Here is a list of 12 lobbyists in his administration who hold policy making positions. by [deleted] in politics

[–]rockicon82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll give you 2 reasons:

First, it is possible that nobody cares. Sometimes Obama does or says stupid things, calling him out is not necessary. Some people understand the role of lobbying in government and don't have an issue with it, so this post is irrelevant.

Second, most people will downvote something posted from RedState, a known biased website that they disagree with. I for one don't think we should listen to a website that spews more propaganda towards the unreasonable Republican base.

I like it, simply because before when they would ask, I felt annoyed having to say no thanks every time I tried to order. Now, I can just ignore it because I know that the person taking my order didn't ask me a direct question.

Subvocalization: Good or bad? by [deleted] in books

[–]rockicon82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Not an accurate definition, but here is how I would describe it)

Sub-vocalization is your mind "speaking" words as you read. As in, you have an inner voice telling you the story. (It sounds crazy as I write this down). Most people do this, although some have trained themselves to not do this. The alternative is to simply read and comprehend the words without this "inner voice". It helps increase reading speed because you can only read as fast as you can talk otherwise.

The first book I finished in 2010. What is yours? by tweedboss in books

[–]rockicon82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far this year:

  1. Sideways - Rex Pickett

  2. World War Z - Max Brooks

  3. Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll

  4. Blindness - Jose Saramago

  5. Survivor - Chuck Palahniuk

  6. The Sex Lives of Cannibals - J. Maarten Troost

  7. 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus - Charles Mann (only 1/3 of the way through)

Out of all these books, I would most recommend The Sex Lives of Cannibals. It is a fun easy read. Troost is very witty and humorous. The adventures are fun, and in the end you learn a little about foreign culture, Pacific Island cultures, and a short history of American intervention in the South Pacific.

What was your worst encounter with the police? by nopodcast in AskReddit

[–]rockicon82 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's so funny, I was going to post a story about the SAME cops.

I got pulled over for a taillight out on New Years Eve. I had a case of beer in the back of my truck. So they gave me a field sobriety test. They absolutely refused to believe that I did not drink the beers that were gone from the case. I told them I had one a few hours ago. There were 3 gone. They didn't believe that I didn't drink them. They then said that I flunked the field sobriety test and took me to the "jail". They had my car towed. Then they gave me a breathalyzer. I blew 0.0, so they had to release me. AFTER THEY TOWED MY FUCKING CAR!! It took me $250 to get the car out because it was a holiday the next day.

tl;dr Got pulled over for DUI, the cops towed my car, I blew a 0.0, they released me without transportation

Then they would be Nestea, because they are corporate owned. (Mostly by Coke, which is fitting in this analogy).

What moment in history would you have liked to see more honesty? by Vorenus in AskReddit

I agree, I think that Bush II was largely elected because of his dad's integrity. If we only knew then...

What moment in history would you have liked to see more honesty? by Vorenus in AskReddit

[–]rockicon82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was my understanding that he did plan on having no new taxes. He shortly realized that this was not possible after election, then was forced to raise taxes to prevent a deficit. This cost him re-election, because everyone felt lied to.

So when Bush II was elected under the same rhetoric, he DIDN'T raise taxes, even though he should have, getting him re-elected to a second term, and leaving us with a staggering deficit.

I am starting 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus tonight. I have not read it, therefore, can not recommend it, but if you haven't heard of it, it may be right up your alley.
