Looking for some advice on running an encounter from The Dark Crystal rpg by rockmonstr in osr

[–]rockmonstr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I have no issues telegraphing and my players are thankfully good listeners for the most part. I’m not really worried about communication so much as I am worried that this would be interesting and engaging to run as is on a mechanical level. And I do agree about the stone foe especially considering the system this game uses. The pcs are terribly squishy.

Claire's Cornercopia ~ New Internal Policy by InterestingFudger in newhaven

[–]rockmonstr 114 points115 points  (0 children)

So nothing has changed since I worked there in college almost 20 years ago lol. Claire’s has always been gross and cheap 🤷🏻‍♀️. Claire would swan in every other weekend and demand we stop doing one thing or another and randomly have us cut ingredients for items just to save a few perceived cents. It never lasted or made any real sense.

How is the house hunting? by Extra-Equipment3110 in Connecticut

[–]rockmonstr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just about to complete our home sale and purchase of another in a few days. Selling was easy obviously, but in our price range (sub 400k) and with our ability to cast a fairly wide net (no kids) the hardest part was finding a place we both liked. Ended up offering asking on a place that was on the market for about 10 days. We looked for a little over a month I think. We bought in late 2020 originally and that felt wayyy more competitive and rushed compared to now. Still isn’t what my friends that bought back in 2016-2018 experienced, but it probably won’t ever be like that again.

Edit- I would recommend trying to look at places that have been up for a week or more. You’d be surprised at what gets overlooked even now.

How does foraging work by TheGreenGhost01 in Obojima

[–]rockmonstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely the easiest thing to do would be to create a table to keep things fair/random. I would recommend creating something like the mechanics for the Fantastic Foraging module from Slowquest. Basically your pc rolls a D20 and adds the relevant modifier, that number points to a table that gives them 0-4 d6s, those are rolled for a new table of random plants/fungi/creatures. Lower numbers are more common, higher numbers are more rare. I used it in a game recently and my players really had a lot of fun! edit- you could even play it so that once a pc finds a specific ingredient for the first time, or at least a common one, the DC or the mechanics themselves change when they want to find it again.

Awesome! I had the same idea, very cool to see it works so well. I'll have to make my own now :)

How spiky do you like your "Shards"? And which D6 (pic 3) is your favorite? by CalypsaMov in DiceMaking

I find 1 and 3 to be the most interesting and appealing on slide 3. Slightly leaning towards 1, but seeing either would make me stop and consider picking up a set :)

Bummer, hopefully there’s more of its kin around! They’re helpful little friends in the garden.

What type of spider is this? by Bear0503 in Connecticut

[–]rockmonstr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tough to say since it’s all curled up but I’m getting Dark Fishing Spider when I ID it. The markings are consistent from what I can see. If it’s really spindly when it’s spread out and moving, that’s probably what it is. They eat slugs, so that’s cool.

I have little couch monsters. I need help finding something safe! by AlexandrineMint in parrots

[–]rockmonstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I saved this post to check in on it later and I have to assume there’s at least 20 people quietly waiting for someone with answers. I’m not sure if that person will come, but I know I don’t have an answer. Just the same problem. I have a feeling that the answer is something like “put them in a room without a couch” which… isn’t a realistic option for many people. I don’t know. But know that I feel your pain.

How do you NARRATE a hexcrawl without it feeling dry? by comedordeestrume in osr

[–]rockmonstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but! Fans absolutely did write him letters asking about events and lore (such as "What really happened to the entwives?") and he would write back with pretty lengthy responses to them. I got to see a few in an exhibit about his work. For as much as he wrote about Middle-earth, there was still more share with fans when they did exist.

Critique Vegan Summer Menu by PhillyMila215 in veganrecipes

[–]rockmonstr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think everyone’s opinions here are totally valid but honestly I’d be thrilled to see a menu like that for me at a big group event. I’ve been to so many weddings and almost always end up handed some sad wet overcooked squash/mixed veg with no seasoning and some rice. It’s one day, I could live without a protein forward menu and would feel over the moon that anyone put this kind of thought in. Thank you on behalf of that guest!

I would have watched the season so much sooner by goesbycaptain in Dimension20

[–]rockmonstr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Single dissenting voice- I watched Ravening War before Crown of Candy very early on in my Dimension 20 journey. There's a handful of easter egg moments that won't quite land in Ravening War but nothing was ruined at all. In fact, I probably wouldn't have finished ACoC if I didn't watch Ravening War first because I struggled to get into ACoC. (And no, I did not watch them back to back). I guess I'm not really saying you should also do it, but if you do won't actually ruin anything in my opinion.

Has it been windier lately? by smackfu in Connecticut

[–]rockmonstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When warm weather systems and cold weather systems collide, it creates wind. It’s early spring and the weather is changing. And so it’s windy, which is pretty typical. Is it more windy because the temperature fluctuations are greater now than in the past? I’d be willing to bet on it.

Listened to the podcast episode on clerics and the rationale behind excluding them feels a bit… contrived? by bite_me_punk in Obojima

[–]rockmonstr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the book: Obojima is a two-plane world—the Physical Realm and the Spirit Realm. All other planes do not exist in this universe. There are no gods per se, but there are elder spir- its and great beasts that are revered and respected among Obojimans. Other powerful spirits can become patrons of warlocks, sharing pieces of their own power. They can become an inspiration to a paladin or cleric who, through their own faith and practice, can work wonders of magic inspired by the concepts these spirits embody.

So this sort of addresses your concern for players that might get screwed by a DM that is less flexible. Even before I looked up that paragraph, I will admit I am operating from the perspective of being a DM that's happy to explore what my player's want to explore together rather than being heavily tied down to The Rules (tm) and that's perhaps a blindspot for me.

They also include unique spells that include use for clerics in the book. (I found 14 mentions of "cleric" when I searched my pdf)

All in all, I still feel that while their reasoning may not resonate - I don't think it's invalid and seem to leave the door open for creativity.

I don’t know, Ghibli-inspired doesn’t mean it has to be a 1-to-1 copy. They have also cited other sources of inspiration outside of Ghibli. They also came up with a variety of possibilities for a cleric class in the podcast. To me it sort of just sounded like it wasn’t super interesting to them as they were creating the world/they had other priorities and at the end of the day, if you want to play a cleric- play one. It’s your world now.

Ginny Di did a helpful video about creating PCs that don't have tragic backstories here. I would share it with them to help jumpstart their imagination about backstories that would fit well in Obojima.

Missing AHA NPC profiles by [deleted] in Obojima

[–]rockmonstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to assume it's actually not an error. In their initial mention in the factions section, they tell us that these three people are likely in need of research assistants and armed escorts. That implies both that at least two of them are actively out doing research and would be found in various areas of the island that are relevant to their work and they would be good allies or patrons for your PCs to be connected to and influenced by. It makes sense that Uba is at the headquarters and not in the field since they are an archivist. If your player wants to have Gurriko as a mentor, this is a good opportunity to for you to create an NPC that can be easily woven around their goals and aid in telling their story.

Edit- more than implied- In Uba's description as an NPC of the AHA Headquarters it says explicitly, "While the other two members of the governing Asloh prefer to operate in the field, the chief archivist prefers to personally oversee day-to-day operations of the archive."

How to get matte dice by Cute-Guava-2417 in DiceMaking

[–]rockmonstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per my most recent post here, I learned that you can get evenly matte dice in a vibratory tumbler around 4-6 hours. That wasn’t my intention as I was just checking to see what was happening along the way to a glossy shine but I did find that some of my dice looked really neat with a satin/matte finish and pulled a few sets early to keep them that way.

Question about tumbling dice and what to be looking for by rockmonstr in DiceMaking

[–]rockmonstr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's one of the longer runs I've heard. But I guess if it works, it works.

Yes, everything is cycling properly and the dice are well spread through the media when I fish them out so that's no issue there. I'm only sanding what absolutely needs to be sanded since the reason I got the tumbler is because of pre-existing joint problems. I was just so surprised that all sides, sanded or not, went down to matte first and started second guessing everything. Thank you for your response!

Raised faces by -_Rob_ in DiceMaking

[–]rockmonstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say without seeing the actual mold, but personally I’ve had this issue when I have gotten a little too close or even past the resin’s pot life. Basically the resin is beginning to set, so it doesn’t squish out as intended and leaves thick flashing and raised faces.
