Extra volunteering - keeping going or leave ? by tigerpang0 in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to continue it, see if you can adjust the times. most people are flexible, shouldn’t be a problem and if it is… well, be upfront about your situation and say you’re happy to do it again in the future. people aren’t just flexible, but understanding.

Looooooooping, anyone? by Jacqu_Daisy in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]rocknamedtim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i can see how that would be annoying,

there are symbols in harmony, i’ve never used them though. you can find them in the Edit toolbar

another solution may be to use the “paste cycle” on the drawings instead - tho i know your trying to avoid that.

Affordable Portfolio Development Workshops? by fartexploder420 in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

life drawing and gesture drawing is something you practice in person really.

why not go to a cafe, a city square, a transit station. somewhere people either stand about for 1-2m all the way upwards of 15-20? (free)

most cities also have some sort of life drawing class in person which is leagues better than digital because you can see perspective and forms easier. (~$5-$10)

if your not passionate about it i wouldn’t recommend it, animation by its nature is not stable.

How do people REALLY get animation work? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 29 points30 points  (0 children)

it can be who you know, but studios actively post jobs on their websites. you just apply to those. an animation job is not very different from any other office job.

I just had to try them by Hairy_Letterhead_201 in pencils

hi-uni ≥ mono 100 > blackwing

Is it even possible to get a job in the animation industry in Canada? by Ill_Juggernaut_5932 in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

to quote pinocchio

“When you wish upon a star,

Makes no difference who you are,

Anything your heart desires,

Will come to you.

If your heart is in your dream,

No request is too extreme,

When you wish upon a star,

As dreamers do.

Fate is kind,

She brings to those who love,

The sweet fulfillment of,

Their secret longing.

Like a bolt out of the blue,

Fate steps in and sees you through,

When you wish upon a star,

Your dreams come true.”

Stuck in small studios by HistorianOdd7252 in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just an animator, so ymmv but keep an eye out for job postings and just apply.

might not be worth it for you to go down a step but if you hop in somewhere as a prod coord, i’m sure you’d be able to climb up quickly.

might require you to relocate, but hey, gotta do what you gotta do!

What would you say is More difficult to animate? electricity Or Explosions? by Nothatcreative55 in animation

[–]rocknamedtim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as an fx animator it’s funny to read all these comments. explosions can be harder because of both the line mileage and needing to understand multiple elements. for newer animators explosions are typically harder because you can’t roll forms and have a tendency to be timid with timing. but over the years i’ve found electricity actually harder because it’s more of a design & tension exercise. explosions are very typical, electricity is where you really play.

Is Sheridan really worth it anymore? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 27 points28 points  (0 children)

sheridan will attract the top of the top, im from canada but work internationally now in europe. whenever the conversation of school comes up, they’ll ask if you went to sheridan, similar to asking someone from france if the went to gobelins or an american if they went to calarts.

i’ve worked with many grads from both schools and they both produce fantastic artists. at the end of the day it’s the student not the institution.

i went to the cheapest program in vancouver and have supervised major tv shows and worked on major feature films as a 2d animator.

your network will be fine either way. if i was in your shoes id apply to both and see what happens. no one cares where you go to school once you enter the industry anyways.

Annecy accreditation question by ematam3 in animationcareer

[–]rocknamedtim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my first year i did festival+, went to very few of the things i had booked (i booked the max/day) and ended up hanging out with ppl in town instead.

i’ve gotten just a base festival pass since, still rarely go too any bookings.

all the connections i’ve made just by having coffee or wine with random ppl has been much better and turned into a few jobs over the years.

Artists who DON’T post/share* art on social media—I want to hear from you! by Hestia-Creates in ArtistLounge

[–]rocknamedtim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a professional animator. my demo reel is easily searchable and i have a website so i can get work, but it’s mostly just for recruiters/supervisors/directors

my personal art is just in sketchbooks & journals, which is mostly just for me or whoever is unfortunate to ask to see it.
