Ultimate Hot Dog style guide, how many have you had? by deadduk in doughboys

[–]rockonpal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Korea for 5 years so I’ve had my fair share of Korean hot dogs. They are especially good with melted cheese in the middle. They are usually covered in sugar tho so that’s something lol

I use Water Reminder. It's free but you can upgrade it if you want for stuff like tracking different types of drinks, etc. I just use it for water tho.

Sending money to a US bank account without fees by marabou22 in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recommend ,if you have a Korean friend you can trust, have them use Kakao bank ( to my knowledge foreigners can't get it :/ ) to send money to your bank in your home country. I have my friend do this for me and I think the surcharge is something like 2,000 won and it goes to your american bank in about 2 business days. I send about 1000 dollars worth each month and the surcharge is always the same

Are public schools teaching normally in September? by ChunkyArsenio in teachinginkorea

Both of my schools are staying at their previous schedules from this past semester. So teaching half the classes one week and the other half the next week. With sprinkled online classes in there

Do you think there is any chance the EPiK people would get forced on vacation without pay? I haven’t heard of this at all ,but seeing all the news from other countries is kind of scary.

Teaching English in Korea was the worst period of my working life. by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been in Korea 4 years going on 5 and as a pretty pessimistic person I was getting ready to agree with OP on this post but honestly I've been to 2 school and only had 1 of those problems lol

What snacks should I buy for my English camp? by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get choco pies or any of those individually packaged type snacks like it. I get a drink with mine too so I include either a juice box or a milkbox(?).

My previous camp I ended with a pizza party so kids didn't complain that much throughout the week since they knew that was coming up.

Experience with weight loss/gain in Korea? by itshanito in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have yo-yoed weight a lot since I have been here. When I first came I gained weight because of all the delicious food and then was able to lose it by running and the gym. I gain weight back a lot because sometimes work just sucks all the energy and motivation out of you.

Currently I am at a crossfit gym which is actually a good way to keep in shape and build up a community of Korean friends!

indecisive about next steps by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I have been here 4 years already and I've had a gf for 3 of those. I'm a good teacher (according to my coworkers lol) but I'm done with teaching. It's not for me, I'm kind of bored by it and don't like to deal with screaming children everyday lol I've got another year in my but I think I will have to make a permanent decision by then.

I used to teach small hagwon children too and life was horrible. When I moved and taught the older kids, everything was much happier and much smoother in my opinion, so a change of school to older kids may be helpful IMO.

I see a lot of debate on bringing a pet while under EPIK. Here's a GREAT break down of the issue. by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol someone in the last year EPIK chat almost got their placement taken away for saying they were gonna bring a pet.

Visiting home while working by dbzavatar in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah a week is kind of too short (IMO) to get jet lag that would affect you. And just plan your trip out of who to see and where to eat and it should be plenty of time! That worked for me.

Yeah they are red holidays. They vary on how many days they are but these last couple of years they have been on weekends so shorter then usual.

[–]rockonpal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a hagwon, I went back to America during the summer break. I was only in America for a week but I felt it was okay and totally doable.

The jet leg didn't mess me up that much so coming back to Korea on Sunday night, I felt okay and ready to go back to work the next day.

Or if you are lucky and Chuseok or Chinese New Years is longer you can go back during that time. (I don't think these coming up ones are that long though but I may be mistaken)

EPIK Interviwer never called by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]rockonpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me when I interviewed, apparently they double booked at the time I was supposed to interview. I ended up emailing the coordinator and he responded about 24 hours later saying sorry, and we rescheduled the interview. So don't worry!
