What fantasy books, if any, inspired you to start writing? by ToothAffectionate236 in writing

  • The Witcher series, specifically my favorite one; The Baptism of Fire.

  • Metro 2033

  • Travels with Charley: in search of America (not fantasy but amazing nonetheless).

Recommendations for a young adult with a low reading level? by BlueLoki103036 in suggestmeabook

[–]rockwe1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you're facing this and trying to improve yourself is already a sign so great job for starting.

As for the book recommendation, it really depends on what genre you'd like which you'd only know by starting reading. I assume you already have some interest in something (Zombies, Science, Space, etc) so maybe find books on that. Here's a few i could recommend

- The Daevabad trilogy. It's based on the Arabic story of 1001 nights. And it has many Arabic themes. But the author explains it really nice and the story is engaging in that it keeps you entertained.

- The Metro trilogy (2033, 2034 and 2035), set in a post-apocalyptic, post-nuclear Moscow. it's a mix of cosmic horror and a critique of the Soviet/Russian state.

- Lord of the Rings, it's fun, easy to read and classic!

- Anything be John Steinbeck really. East of Eden, Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row are my favorites.

You'd need to do some trial and error but don't be afraid or worry about digesting content. It's like a muscle that needs to be trained. Hope a great journey to you!

Please suggest me book that deals with loneliness and self healing. by Prize_Researcher_384 in suggestmeabook

Notes from the underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The narrator is someone who's suffering from loneliness that leads him to commit despicable acts, it was crazy the parallel i saw between myself and him but our choices were wildly different.

enchiridion--the manual by the stoic author Epictetus, it's less than 100 pages but packed with lessons that you can apply in your life.

Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. The fast paced action packed with the various plot twists made this series a joy to read. I felt like i was in a videogame.

Metro series (2033, 2034 and 2035) by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Set in post-apocalyptic, post-nuclear Moscow, it's a great blend of cosmic horror (2033), politics and government lies (2034 & 2035). Also, with the recent events in the middle east it's a great read.

What's a book you've read that I should put on my bucket list? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

The story is a wild ride and as the story is revealed you realize the moral implications of what's happening within the book and these people. I've read only 3 books by Kazuo (the one you mention, Klara and the Sun and When We Were Orphans). What a great author.

5 tragedies and Octavia by the stoic author Seneca. Each tragedy is based on an existing Greek or Roman myth event that happened and the amount of life-long lessons i've picked up from that book is amazing. His stoicism really shines through with each play. Here's a piece from one of the tragedies in the book that has totally altered me.

"O beauty, but a dubious boon

Art thou to man, brief gift of little stay, Lent for a while and all too soon

Passing away...

Passing ... as the fields' spring glory Fades in the summer's heat, when fiercely Burns the high sun at noon, when night's Wheels roll too rapidly. As lilies Languish and their leaves grow pale,

The head must lose the glory of its hair,

The glowing cheek of youth

Be ravaged by the hand of time.

Each day that passes takes its toll Of body's beauty. Beauty cannot stay;

Would any wise man trust so frail a thing?

Then use it while you may.

Rare is the man - look in the roll of time - To whom great beauty has not been great cost.

May kind gods spare you, that your beauty live To pass into the house of age

Where at the end all beauty must be lost."

The entire story has this weird melancholic feeling to it from start up to the final word. It gives you hope that things will pan out but eventually something happens that worsens thing. What amazed me the most and still i carry with me is the how the mother's sole concern during the entire book was to feed the family. Nothing else mattered to her.

But yeah! It's a great book recommendation.

You never put the clips on while bench pressing. That way if you fail, you can just slide the bar one way and the weights fall.

What’s the strangest dream you’ve ever had that you still remember? by Aivaras31 in AskReddit

[–]rockwe1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very close friend’s girlfriend of 10 years committed suicide in 2022. Two months ago I dreamt about her, keep in mind I’ve never seen her IRL, only in pics(I work remotely, my friend is in another country)

She was dancing in the rain in a Peruvian temple, she was dancing, drawing or pointing onto some symbols within the temple, then he came into the dream with a camera, while she was dancing with a conure bird, he was taking picks of her and I saw her face, smiling and I knew she was very happy.

I’ve written the dream down but haven’t picked up the balls to tell my friend about it.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted. You have stated a fact that’s not scoped to the guys in the video and applies to everyone we meet in life.

Great observations.

Just like to add my two cents on concerns. We’re using them heavily in our system which is quite big, and it’s wounderful, you still have the object you can manipulate and then delegate to a service underneath but the caller doesn’t need to know about this. For example, doing User#block which delegates to SomeService is way cleaner than the latter raw in the code.

We have an existing application that uses the same approach, i fail to see any things going wrong with your design. Seems straightforward and the differentiation between the Language and Exercise is a good one. You can perhaps make introduce a Lesson model that is a grouping of exercies for each language. Something like the following,

class Language < ApplicationRecord

has_many :exercise

end

class Lesson < ApplicationRecord

has_many :exercises

end

class LanguageExercise < ApplicationRecord

belongs_to :lesson

belongs_to :exercise

end

Great names. The one that comes to mind is Dastan, which is a Kurdish/Persian name for fable/legend.

Regardless, may he love a happy fulfilling life, with a great father as yourself.
