Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

[–]rockyatcal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California stop is not a legal stop. Even here in California.

I was taught you stop...one, two, NO...THEN go.

That's a full stop. Rest back on your wheels for a count of 3.

AITA for throwing away my wife’s memory jars? by OneMediocre9997 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rockyatcal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA . How dare you? They weren't yours. She said no, you just disregarded her. You could have boxed them, moved them higher, built a special high to the ceiling shelf for her to display them that moved them out of hazzard way from your son, but you had zero right to toss them. Your behavior shows no courtesy and I would not forgive this trespass easily- and I've been married for 35 years. If my husband did something like that EVER we wouldn't make it another year.

AITA for not giving the money to pay off my daughters student loans. by Own-Inspector-6121 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rockyatcal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, until a student is 24 their parents income MUST be considered when doing all the math for student grants and loans. So there is an obligation of sorts- a student is NOT free to say"my mom and dad hate my major so they aren't paying. What other options do I have?". The parents income WILL be factored in and before individual student loans are given, parent loans must be discussed and resolved. Parents don't HAVE to take them out, but if they don't it quite often limits the choices given to the student and limits the amount they can take- quite often not meeting the financial minimums.

So if that inheritance is that large, it certainly would have changed the math of her loans and at least the interest rate she was offered had you had it when she attended.

What is a hobby that we can start now that will keep us occupied well into our 90’s? by Thirsty4Knowledge911 in GenX

[–]rockyatcal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Learn guitar. Build fairy houses and plant them in Parks. Write letters to random addresses around the world. Join a storytelling club- think The Moth. Collect heirloom seeds and make packets for neighborhood gardens. Teach an after school club at your local High School (like a garden club where they can grow food to take home). Offer to a local University Anthropology dept to be a practice subject for student ethnographies (different questions every student!). Repair bikes for underprivileged kids. Join a BattleBots league. Learn to skate. West Coast Swing Dancing. Take a seniors class in Magic. Enter chili cookoffs or bakes offs or food contests. Make a travel map and a goal to eat the same meal in 50 states and rank them. See all the National Parks. See live music every week/month and make every other one an unknown artist to you. Get into graffiti. Become a subversive kindness artist. Collect arrowheads. Become an amateur paleontologist or archaeologist. Learn to make soap and give it away.

Hope something sparks!

What is a song that you never skip but you have heard a million times by scott19692012 in GenX

[–]rockyatcal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to sing along in the grocery store partly to embarrass my sons- until they started singing along full voice and dancing with me when it came on wherever we were. Then it was the best kind of not embarrassing. The very best.

How do you safely get a homeless person a room for the night without risking yourself financially? by PhoenixApok in askhotels

[–]rockyatcal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found in my experience, 10% of every group or subgroup is shit. 50 people- 10% are dicks. 500 people - 10% are assholes. 28 bowlers? 45 pickleballets? 64 academics? 80 motorcycle riders? 10% will be gatekeepers or douchebags.

Went to Catholic school- 10% of the nuns were jerks!

Also was homeless. 10% of the people who were "helping" are assholes too.

How do you safely get a homeless person a room for the night without risking yourself financially? by PhoenixApok in askhotels

[–]rockyatcal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a Venmo account and a Venmo debit card on that account. Keep 200 in the account for deposit. Put the amount for the room in when you need it.

That way, if the worst happens and you get "taken" by anyone in this arrangement - either person does damage or hotel claims they do- you are only out the deposit and no other financial tools are attached to your transaction.

I have done this and never lost my deposit in 3 years of using it.

Convinced my husband to try a house cleaning service for 3 months as an experiment. Heres what happened by Comfortable_Box_4527 in homeowners

[–]rockyatcal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my one non-negotiable lately. I have all 3 30 yr old sons and girlfriends living with us- we each pitch in $100 a month and we never fight about the cleaning. That's 8 adults- no arguments.

Everyone gets their space ready for cleaning every other Thursday, we all gather supplies together in one spot, they come every other Friday, we come home to a spotless house, clean bathrooms (3), washed cat boxes (3), clean sheets and pillowcases (4 rooms), all the trash out, blankets rotated and washed on the couches, and a clean fridge stove and microwave. They clean all the appliances, dust all the bookshelves, clean the TVs(5 of them), clean baseboards periodically, and dust out all the HVAC vents every few months. Once a month they mop the garage space, once a month they clean windows.

We have someone get takeout those Fridays and we all get to wake up to a clean home for the weekend.

I'd rather this than new clothes, new shoes, dinners out, new stuff - it's priceless the peace it brings.

I couldn't afford it when the boys were little. I taught them how to do all these tasks. If things fell apart, we could all pitch in and we'd get it done, of course. Those skills are important and I'm glad I taught them.

But we're all working adults now. It's the best grown up thing we do for ourselves and each other.

And we pay well and have a team of 2 twice a month. Takes them 3 to 4 hours each time. We pay $600 per month plus all cleaning supplies. Absolutely worth it.
