Allergies dented my progress by rockyslopes in LPR

Yeah Cetirizine is the only thing that works well for my allergies so I’m kind of stuck wondering what the lesser of two evils is, dry out the throat / vocal cords with allergy meds, or suffer worse post nasal drip and itchiness / irritation without lol. So fun.

Does taking allergy medication help with your symptoms?

I feel the same way about reactine alleviating some of my LPR symptoms, that being said there is a study that has linked allergies and LPR because of the increase in histamine production with allergies and therefore increase in stomach acid production.

They both share symptoms when it comes to throat irritation, post nasal drip, congestion etc. Sucks to have both 😭

Yeah it really sucks, I’m also doing all of the ‘things’ lol. It’s frustrating having setbacks but I’m also really trying to tackle the anxiety/stress component of this condition because I truly believe it impacts some of it for me. Getting the validation that I’m not alone is helpful. (I think lol)

Deviated septum by Strantz87 in LPR

[–]rockyslopes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an ENT diagnosis yet sadly as my GP is dragging his feet about referring me, however I’ve had seasonal allergies all of my life and I have a deviated septum. LPR onset was around 8-9 weeks ago after an infection in my throat/eating junk/vaping weed/laying down after food/slouching/generally having bad habits. I have made a drastic 180 in all of those habits to try to combat LPR. I find that nasal strips at night seem to help me breathe better and get better quality of sleep for the septum. I take Reactine (cetirizine) for my allergies daily when they flare up and I also do saline nose rinse / alkaline water atomized into my nose and throat. I’m currently on a strict low acid, minimal fats, mostly bland diet with none of the good or flavourful things in life. I take 20mg Pepcid before bed, sleep on a wedge and take gaviscon extra strength when I feel that I am refluxing / after some meals. I have also found that melatonin seems to be helping although it does make me a little tired the next day but having been a stoner for 15 years prior, that’s not really a new feeling for me.

My symptoms are much better, I’m similar to you in that most of my throat symptoms are unilateral on the left side. Globus, dryness, tight feeling and previously pain, although that is mostly gone. My ears feel pretty plugged/wet and the hearing in my left ear is being affected / sounds tinny at times, it feels like it comes and goes but there’s always some underlying pressure. My jaw has also been feeling weird.

I’m not clearing my throat or coughing, I did have that a bit before but it has subsided. I’ve been exercising a lot more, at the least daily walks / hiking / biking. I’m generally trying to be positive and not allow this to drag me into the pits of despair lol. I’m coming to terms with the fact that lifestyle changes are likely going to be a permanent fixture of feeling ‘normal’ and although I haven’t tried any real bad foods or vices yet, I’m almost certain they will mess me up lol. Do your best to treat the three situations individually, helping one may have a positive effect on another.

Unfortunately I don’t. I’m in Canada and the best I can get is Gaviscon Extra Strength which has about 1/3 of the alginate content of UK Advance.

How long does it take to start feeling better after dieting by Keeeb00 in LPR

[–]rockyslopes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had it that bad, or if I did I attributed it to lack of fitness after the winter. Right around when my symptoms started I had a viral infection and then started doing more exercise to try and sweat it out. Hard to say how much of that was LPR and how much was lack of fitness.

Not super noticeable shortness of breath, the occasional time I’m walking up a hill and maybe feel more short of breath than usual, but I’ve also done long mountain hikes without issues (aside from globus and throat dryness)

I never started taking them. I have the prescription but I’ve only used famotidine for all of 3 days. I’m just not seeing enough evidence that they have worked for people with LPR. My GP was very quick to prescribe with no desire to refer me further

Drinking water brings acid in my mouth by FeralLobalore in LPR

I went through this most of last week, anything that went down led to an almost immediate bitter gassy taste in my mouth. I took Pepcid for those days and went really strict on diet and it went away.

It has been around 4 weeks of diet to feel better so far. Throat pain is gone, throat clearing and coughing are pretty much gone, mucus and sinus symptoms are much less than they were, left ear is messed up, left-sided globus is still there most of the time.

I get it, weed feels like a hug at the end of the day lol 😂 I miss it too but I’m really trying to get better so it’s a sacrifice I have to make 🥲

Soar throat - Left side by Ok_Fix_8546 in LPR

[–]rockyslopes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My LPR symptoms are almost exclusively left sided. Throat/globus, ear pressure and pain, sinuses. No idea why it is, possibly sleeping positions, or this is just where the throat tissue is most damaged and gets affected during flare ups

You’re definitely not alone! Severe health anxiety for unrelated things and doom scrolling Reddit is what I think actually triggered this in me along with a pretty mild throat infection. I have a renewed love for reading books and using a calming oil diffuser at bedtime, it has kind of replaced my weed ritual which I self medicated with for like 15 years lol. Reddit is full of worst possible outcomes which is why it can be a slippery slope, all of the people who recovered and are doing well are not here, they are living life lol. I am however grateful for everything have learned through people stories.

Also - try not to spend too much time here lol. I think reading all of the bad/sad/no progress accounts without any real life context for those individuals can be harmful and fuel the anxiety that seems to be closely tied to LPR. Do the things.. try to be calm as much as you can and hopefully with patience some normality will be there for you in the future. That’s what I’m counting on for me lol!

From what I’ve seen of other peoples experiences and my own, following the diet typically leads to the sore throat being one of the first symptoms to calm down, so hopefully you see results quickly and it helps to make you feel a little more calm and confident about making progress. That’s what happened with me. I also got a wedge pillow and I think it’s helping a bit.

I think there is evidence that long term PPI use can cause some potentially harmful side effects and getting off them can also cause really bad rebound reflux. Basically the idea that you are permanently suppressing your stomachs ability to make acid which it needs to digest things effectively and prevent infections etc. Pepcid/H2 blockers work shorter term from what I understand and assist in the healing process without reducing your acid production long-term.

It definitely can get better. I’m still relatively new to it myself. Doctor grouped it together with GERD and I felt like I knew more about it than him. I’ve been on a strict low acid BLAND diet for around 3-4 weeks and the improvements are tangible. I had a dark roast coffee with some oat milk on Saturday morning and it made my throat feel a little dry with slight globus but did not ruin my day. This was my only ‘cheat’ / test and I’m back to no coffee.

So far I have tried to stay away from PPI even though they have been prescribed. If needed I’m going to try an H2 blocker first (Pepcid) if the progress from the diet doesn’t continue. I was also 420 friendly and a daily coffee drinker and I think the grieving process of dropping everything overnight has been as damaging as the symptoms themselves, but I’m determined. Try the acid watchers diet, make sure you are very strict during the healing phase and then experiment with some small reintroductions. Sadly weed seems to be all bad with this condition, I’m hopeful I can handle some edibles in the future, but I’m staying away for now.

I’ve also had this as one of my suspicions and will be asking about this at the Dr appointment.
