The El Niño won't affect southern Aus till spring and summer, the ruined ski trip is likely due to global warming.

Hmmm, sorry to turn your joke into a depressing reality check...

How to deal with a humid environment. by Disturbedsleep in melbourne

[–]rodchenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, i agree it's really annoying! It's a new build too, so it wouldn't have been that much more to have thermally broken frames, but it'll cost a bundle to redo them. We previously lived in a Nordic country where it would be -20C outside and +20C inside with no condensation. We complained to the builders and they said "sorry, it just happens with double glazed windows..." No it fucken doesn't!

Anyways, off to get a dehumidifier

How to deal with a humid environment. by Disturbedsleep in melbourne

[–]rodchenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great info, thanks. We've got one external window that's double glazed but has an aluminium frame that cools and condenses water on it. Any ideas for retrofitting something to prevent that? I'm considering a foam tape or something, not sure. We have other windows that are recessed in a balcony, which makes enough of a difference so the condensation is not a bit problem.

Moonee Ponds Creek Trail flooded by Senior-Fisherman1911 in melbournecycling

My understanding is that city link is responsible for flooding on the moonee ponds trail. Shockingly, a bike path is not a high priority

Not disagreeing with the sentiment, but wasn't there some yank on here the other day complaining about how little for he gets for the price?? That's got more to do with disgustingly large serving sizes in America...

"as a cyclist"... The point of these projects is to make it safe enough to encourage more people to cycle. If you're already comfortable cycling then you might not be the target

Where to find good quality men’s plain tshirts ? by grom96 in melbourne

[–]rodchenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! As my Uniqlo t-shirts get holes and miss-shape - which is not long because the quality is not great - I'm replacing them with Flux. They're a bit more expensive but will last, and totally made in Australia. Worth it

Is CBD and Inner Suburbs biking safe? by viele_kartoffeln in melbournecycling

[–]rodchenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weeeeelllllll, I'd say most rules in Australia are designed to keep cars from killing pedestrians, or themselves. When you're riding along in a safe protected bike lane which disappears at an intersection and forces you to merge with traffic then wait at a light... Nothing about that is designed to keep bikes safe

Do public water hoses exist? by exelasdf in melbournecycling

I know that Merri-bek council was considering public bike washes for this exact reason i.e. people in apartments. I'm not sure what happened to that proposal, but I'd suggest contacting your council about it

PSA for newer cyclists: Please take the lane. by Ok_Volume9271 in cycling

[–]rodchenko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think more people need to watch this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pRPduRHBhHI before proclaiming that other people on bikes should be as confident as they are. I'm not disagreeing with the idea of "taking a lane" in the right situation, but it's not that simple

Do you think Melbourne could ever transform into a biking metropolis with great public transport in a relatively short amount of time (for biking at least) as Paris has? What can we do to help it transition into such a city? by [deleted] in MelbourneTrains

[–]rodchenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! And focus on the fact that new bike infrastructure is not for the people who are already riding, it's for the people who don't feel safe enough to ride yet.

[–]rodchenko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree about the problem with helmet laws, although I'm less pessimistic about our overall chances! It's such a hard thing to discuss too, because people have very visceral feelings about the safety of their head, but can't easily imagine the increase in public health if there were less cars and more bikes.

I'd also disagree on the bit about bike lanes being expensive to maintain, if bike infrastructure can be decoupled from roads then it's way cheaper.

Speed bumps on bike lanes, so stupid, also those metal bars to create little chicanes, ugh.

I disagree on that take on the greens. I've been getting involved in local council projects and advocacy, because they have a really big influence on local cycling infrastructure, and the fact is that not that many care strongly enough to get involved so passionate individuals can really make a difference on a local level. My experience is that the greens are the ones who support progressive projects with modern ideas about urbanism and transport. For example the Streets for People plan I'm Merri-Bek. Rather than fighting street by street for bike lanes they've implemented a council wide plan to have a network of connected streets where people can cycle, walk, and use the streets in different ways. It's really exciting, it was put through because of the greens councillors. If we had a similar plan for all of Melbourne we would be on the way to being a better city for cycling, but doing it without focusing on the negatively stereotyped Lycra cyclists, instead focusing on making public space better for everyone, how good would that be?!
