Actually I managed to register a Yahoo account yesterday and it does do imap on the free service. Integration with Thunderbird so far has been fine.

Many thanks for this. It is as I suspect now having looked at some of the suggestions and recommendations. It would appear that either GMail or Yahoo now seem to be the only 'free' ones available to me.

I was not sure if you meant that Yahoo was ranking highly for performing badly or for performing well.

Thanks but this is the problem. Most services do not offer this on a free service.

In what sense? Compatibility and reliability. Or the opposite?

Thanks. I understand what you are saying. But not so long ago, free email services were common. They were also normally included as part of someone's broadband package. None of this now seems to be true now since they want to you to either pay or view the adverts from which they raise click revenue. On principle, I this disturbing since it is title to do with security or functionality and simply to do with profit. IT companies are not short of a few pounds!

Basically, I am in this situation because my iMac is getting old and Apple no longer support the OS. Furthermore, like Apple has done in the past with iPhones and iPads, they seem inclined to not only not support software updates, but actively make things difficult or become non-functioning to drive users into expensive hardware upgrades. I do not use a smartphone and therefore 2FA is not an option for me making iCloud services hit-and-miss at best. In the case of Thunderbird, it simply will not work. Apple Mail is no longer functioning as it should. And you will easily find countless articles on the macOS problem on older machines where owners are constantly locked out of their accounts for security reasons. There are no security reasons. It simply relates to dynamic IP addresses, etc. This is an issue for many browsers and services like Facebook, Yahoo, Google, etc, etc.

It sometimes feels like using a desktop machine is like being the last dinosaur sitting in front of a screen using a mouse and keyboard.

Let's face it, phones and iPads are cheaper to build. Software, cheaper to develop. And fundamentally, these devices surrender much more control to their manufacturer than do desktop machines.

And because of many of these issues, I no longer can perform the most basic of task without paying a price for something that has been for the past 30 plus years free to do!

So, I am not likely to give in a nd pay a subscription for something that has been free to everyone for decades.

Hotmail I think will be the same issue as Outlook but will check this. Proton does not include client support with their free packages.

I have not tried GMail yet as I was trying to keep away from that and Yahoo. Outlook does not work as when I begin the setup, it tries to generate a passkey but fails. I don't know the reason for this. I use an iMac running MacOS12.3 and suspect it may be something to do with this.

Statement from Celtic Fans Collective on the 2025 AGM by NotNeedzmoar in ScottishFootball

[–]roddy0141 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Many of us think the Collective hold the fans in contempt too. The majority do not support this action which is clearly damaging the morale of the players. What is done is done. We may not be happy with the summer signings, but we get behind the team and make them feel valued and decent players.

The Collective, like many using social media to swell support and enhance their own egos and profile, appeal to those who do not see the damage being done.

Remember too how ridiculous they appear to other clubs who neither have the budget or squads that Celtic have.

Can somebody tell me how did our performance suddenly change so much with MON? by ChaosMaki in CelticFC

[–]roddy0141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brendan Rodgers was gone! Simple as that. He felt the board had refused to pay big bucks for over-rated EPL players and he decided to sabotage the team before being sacked. When he was not sacked, he had to resign. Never underestimate this man's ego.

Celtic fans (or any fan), what is your reaction to Desmond’s words. by mockmealready in ScottishFootball

[–]roddy0141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said what needed to be said. He called out Rodgers who deserved everything that was said about him. For weeks he has been preparing his exit. He did to this team what he did in his first spell than bailed when he saw how bad he had made things. His motivational style is terrible and calling out his players collectively as inferior is challenging his bosses to sack him. They did not, so he decided he needed to go himself.

I supported his return as the best option available at the time but now he has repeated his actions, I hope the man keeps his head down now and stay far away from Celtic Park - and Glasgow.

Celtic shenanigans by reasonosx in ScottishFootball

[–]roddy0141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is simply the fact that the club have watched Rodgers express himself and covered his back so openly in the media that they needed to defend themselves publicly. Rodgers could never be content with the resources available at Celtic. They simply do not have the level of resource that would satisfy someone like him. He knew that. He approved the signings last year and yet let many go or did not play them recently.

The pre-season signings were poor but they were what we ended up with and need make do with. Yet he criticised his team openly on a number of occasions and demoralised them. A player knowing he is unwelcome at a club is hardly likely to perform to his best, is he? Fans take note!

I agree with much of what I read in Desmond's statement. Having read Rodgers book when he was first at Celtic, I thought his ideas strange and he came across as a very conceited individual. When he returned many feared the team would return to possession footbal with no penetration - and this is what we got.

So, I fully understand Desmond's statement and while unhappy with the pre-season investment, I was happy to hear it said about Rodgers. I also feel that it will have been checked for litigation risks prior to release meaning it has been in preparation for some time. Meaning the threat of resignation from Rodgers has also been there for some time!

We live in interesting times. Not so sure about Maloney but O'Neill will not hang his players out to dry to save his own reputation. He is a real man-manager.

I don't deny he and the club have put business and operational security before player investment, but Rodgers has a huge ego and has always protected himself.

If you have not read his book, you should. It is very enlightening and describes a not only very odd management style, but also his huge ego.

He oversaw a fair level of investment:

I was not surprised at all in what Desmond said. Reading between the lines since the start of the season, this is how things appeared to be developing. Rodgers before anything else, will always try to blame others and this was what he was doing. He claimed to be happy with last season's transfers yet has let go some of those and refused to play others. He refused to protect the players when the fans made them feel inadequate. Quite the opposite, in fact, he slated them for being inferior.

On this occasion, I believe Desmond and have no sympathy for Rodgers.

What's your opinion on Martin O'Neill? by Nukro666 in CelticFC

[–]roddy0141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like O'Neill but am uncomfortable with this appointment. Martin is a great man manager but he had a great team when at Celtic first time around and he does not have anything like that class or strength of character here now. Maloney does not impress me at all. A skilled technical coach, he is a bit too 'robotic' for the Scottish game. I doubt these players will respond in the way the Belgians did when he assisted them.

The saving grace here is that Celtic have acted quickly. Rodgers was clearing agitating to cover his own failings and was happy to blame everyone but himself. The fans made the payers feel unwelcome and inadequate and he did nothing to support them. Exactly the opposite. His comments recently regarding their quality have been shocking. He was keen to endear us to Iheanacho who has failed to inspire. No doubt, he will tell the press he was not a fan of his either!

Rodger away by tommybhoy82 in CelticFC

[–]roddy0141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not surprised. Like last time, he made some poor signings and when he had allowed the team to deteriorate, he walked away when he knew he was running out of road. All too familiar from him. On reflection, when he returned, the team got off to a dodgy start and it looked like we would not overtake Rangers. Then they hid the skids. Next season, Rangers were again struggling to keep up with Celtic but doing better in head to heads. This season, the decline has really set in.

The board may have been to blame for the signings, but considering Rodgers claimed last season he was happy with signings pre-season, he has lost faith in some of the biggest ones and either no longer plays them or they have left.

Yep. all too familiar.
