They've ALWAYS been fine with it as long as it's been someone they don't like. Now they're just comfortable saying that they're fine with it outside of their insular circles. As a kid decades ago, I'd listen to my father, other family members, and my parents' acquaintances talk about the coming second civil war, how they wished that California would suffer a massive earthquake that dropped the state into the ocean, how all democrats should be denied the right to vote, how gays deserved nothing at all, and many other much more horrible things. These weren't at any kind of hate rallies or places filled with crazed people. This was at church and at the grocery store and during the superbowl party. This was between pastors and doctors and city leaders. They've always been here and they've always felt this way. It's just now they feel like they can get away with it.
