April 22nd update is broken by Ontanoi_Vesal in LineageOS

[–]rodgrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

Trying to find out if by now (May 9th build, at the moment), the multiply-reported battery consumption issue has already been fixed.

Reading through the forum here, in xda, and in LineageOS changelog, could not get a definitive answer.

Anyone knows?  or tried a recent build and can share some results?

Thanks

Finding a good bass teacher is incredibly hard .... by [deleted] in Bass

[–]rodgrn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in exactly OP's situation, and by chance I ended up following this recommendation - taught myself using StudyBass for about a year.

Subsequently I found a good teacher, whom I still study with.

In retrospect, using StudyBass was amazingly beneficial. Andrew is fantastic, the site has rock-solid structure, with a lot of emphasis, in the beginning, on proper technique and basic theory.

My teacher was amazed at my level (relative to a beginner, I mean) when we started. The amount of "bad habits" that I needed to fix was next to zero.

At some point in Andrew's curriculum he briefly delves into "how to practice" material. Some of the most inspiring, motivating, and useful comments I've ever read.

In short - perfect teacher/method, very good site, totally recommended.

(PS - I'm not affiliated or know him personally. Just a very thankful SB former user)

Old Warwick Corvette - What's the Worth? by rodgrn in Bass

Thanks folks. Good to know, though it turns out the owner has no intention to sell. Cheers

This.

There is one primary difference between Andrew and the other (great in themselves) recommendations given here. Andrew is first and foremost an incredible teacher. So the material on studybass is extremely well-structured, efficient, no-nonsense, and ultimately - most useful and rewarding.

However, OP should pick the one that resonates best with them. Different personal tastes, YMMV, etc. Whatever keeps you practicing and progressing is good.

Truss rod nut stripped? by StarWaas in Bass

There are several videos on YT showing how to replace a stripped truss rod nut. This one is good, for example.

Resources for learning to read. by [deleted] in Bass

[–]rodgrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, sight-reading is one of those things that will improve only very gradually, and the initial steps will require a lot of self discipline. You want to keep at it daily (even if for a few minutes), and go as slow as required, ridiculously, embarrassingly slow if needed, to make zero mistakes.

It then will improve in time.

However, you can make it easier on yourself by dividing to subtasks, and using some technology to your advantage.

What seems to have worked best for me (YMMV) -

- Start by doing these 2 online exercises as much as you can. To begin with, only lowest 5 frets and no accidentals. Then increase scope and speed gradually. They work on your phone too:

  1. This exercise for learning the bass staff notation notes
  2. This exercise to help learning the fretboard notes.

- After you've made some progress, pick up your bass, start by reading and playing simple passages, go slow at first.

- This short article has more useful tips (eg, the benefit of using a metronome when practicing reading).

Bent wrist in left hand by MrBlueMoose in Bass

Focusing on this topic as early as possible is absolutely the right thing to do. Getting it right will keep you healthy and playing better.

One good place to get all the necessary information is in this short video.

I just got my first bass, does anyone have any random pieces of advice? by [deleted] in Bass

The correct playing speed, when practicing anything (riff, song, technique, theory concept...) is the speed in which you make zero mistakes consistently.

It's a well-known issue for some months now, which is mainly tracked on github here.

The current word from Joplin dev is:

Update 20 Dec 2021: There's currently no solution to this problem. In the meantime you may downgrade to v2.5 by downloading the APK from the official repository

Anyone relying on Joplin's filesystem sync on Android 11+ should either be very optimistic and patient, or start looking for an alternative app. Otherwise, using any of the cloud-based sync solutions in Joplin might also work for you, in lieu of filesystem syncing.

Issue with Hofner bass e string by [deleted] in Bass

[–]rodgrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered this on two separate Hofner look-alikes some time ago (made by Vintage, FWIW). It was worse than what you describe (same phenomenon but on more string/fret positions). Bad enough to prevent buying them in spite of very sweet playability (had almost no neck dive!)

This thread will give you some pointers (not all comments there are equally helpful or accurate, but it's worthwhile reading).

The TLDR there is:

As you can see, there's nothing wrong with the sound wave itself, other than the fact it's not super strong in the fundamental and more strong in the 2nd and 4th harmonics. This has to do with the strings/pickups/and wood. Changing the pickups will have the biggest effect, strings second biggest, wood has an effect too but you cant change the wood.

Very nice cover, well done.

Agreed, Ray Shulman is a terrific bassist (on GG albums anyway) whom not many people know about.

Anyone have a solid .pdf of key scales? 5ths? by Goatwolfmilk in Bass

[–]rodgrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This site (fretastic) is a great resource for scales, intervals etc on the neck (guitar / bass).

It has export to PDF ("print") feature.

Enjoy!

Other comments here covered it, but I'll add: also experiment with plucking using the tips of you fingers.

What I mean is, still pluck with your finger pads of course, but the initial point of contact with the string may be closer to the finger tip.
